The Library...ugh.

  • The Library...ugh.

will there be any way to get the library to disappear from our profile pages? it takes up way too much space, the artist pictures are bold and ugly, it makes the profile look unbalanced, (way too much content in the left column, not enough in the right) and i want my charts and shoutbox to be the main elements of my profile, not this unsightly and largely pointless list of artists.

or even if the library could be made into just a list (no pictures) and transferred to the right sidebar where it is more unobtrusive. i just hate having it be so large and prominent in my profile since it's the least useful feature of the site.

other than that, i really don't mind the new layout at all. but yeah, i think last.fm NEEDS to consider changing the format of the library, or (ideally) having an option to not display it altogether. i really hate it, and personally it seems unpractical the way it is set up now. anyone agree?
  • Least useful? I've used it so many times now - of course, I used it in Beta...

But still, it's useful and fun to check out library pages for your favorite artists and see where your tracks stand for that artist, as well as what tracks of theirs you've loved and such.

For stat buffs (like me), it's reasonably interesting.

Does it make sense for it to take up half the main page and a large amount of your personal page? No, not at all.
Sayonara, not to be confused with cyanide, which is, of course, goodbye in any language.
  • Not liking the library at either. It's kind of redundant.

When you go to someones profile, you see the library preview (top 6 overall artists with pictures).

And then you got the charts below it displaying the overall top artists, with the same 6 artists and then some.

The profile is definitely unbalanced but unfortunately getting rid of the Library won't fix all the issues with the display.
    bittersweet agony goodness...
  • It's only like that if they still have the default Library settings! It is customizable...

i don't think it's useLESS. the feature is fun/interesting, and they should keep it. but i still think that the charts and shoutbox should be the most prominent parts of a profile and the library section takes up way too much space and throws the entire layout off balance.

Reckon you'd have known that if you were just a normal user?

And not one of the Beta bunch?

Edit: Hell, I don't even know how.

yes, it is customizable, but not customizable enough. we can't even choose how many artists to display (which for me would = 0).

LMAO, it took me 10 mins to find out how. Glad I wasn't the only one having trouble. Look for a small icon/drop-down arrow right above the library display.

    Still not happy though! lol

    Thanks for that.

Realised that not much can be done, but it's something to fiddle with.

    Yeah, joke right?

    'Where's Wally/Waldo' provides less of a challenge.

yes, it is customizable, but not customizable enough. we can't even choose how many artists to display (which for me would = 0).

Sure you can... the custom artists section says you can include up to 8... not that you have to include 8.

no kidding, i'm not completely stupid. but then you have to choose the artists. you can't display your "top 4 overall artists" or "top 12 artists from the past 7 days." or, like i said "top 0 artists." and trust me, i already tried choosing the second option and not typing in the names of any artists.

I wish there was a 'Kill it with fire' option...

Thanks for the image though. Should keep that, can see a lot of people needing it in the future.

What is the purpose of having a library that includes artists with 0 plays.
I went to the last page and was shocked to see that Akon, 50 cent and other artists that I have never listen to (or to my knowledge tagged) are there. Thankfully I can delete them... but confusion?
  • I like the Library. You can choose which artists to display and how many, check out your top songs for every band you've listened to, and most importantly, you can finally delete artists. That last option alone makes me thrilled for this update.

I know everybody will come down me for being a "last.fm stooge" because I'm a mod (I've been getting it alot in the last 2 days). But still, from the perspective of a regular user I agree about loving the library. Some people want to push it down the page or remove it, personally I think it's the best part of my profile now so I want it prominent and dead center.

Set it for the "last 7 days" chart setting. It's like having a visual weekly chart, plus it changes over the week as you listen. If you listen to a whole album of one artist they will jump up to the top of the chart and drop back down 7 days later. On the other hand favorite artists that you regularly play, but not as much in one sitting, will slowly climb up then slowly climb down.

For a stat junkie it provides a really cool visual representation of the fluctuation of your weekly listening habits.
All comments reflect the views of the poster and not of last.fm or it's management.

So, if I delete every single artist from my Library, will I not have to look at the pictures anymore? Will I have a big empty blank box or will it actually go away? And will all my data be fine? Will they be added back as soon as I listen to them?
  • I think library is not totally useless but it takes up TOO MUCH space.. more than enough... I think the images should be much smaller.

The data in the library is the same as the data in your charts, delete it and you'll lose both, scrobble new stuff and it'll be automatically added to the library.

Personally I had been looking forward for the beta to go live because I love what the library offers.
  • The library has some great features. The thing I love about it is going to a profile page where I know a person is a "fan" of Deep Blue Something and now being able to be much more easily disappointed that their 1,565 plays of said artist is all of PlayBreakfast At Tiffany's. ;)

When the first criticisms of the libraries position and promanence game in I tried to counter that it took up approximately the same about of space below recent tracks as the radios did below recent tracks on the live site. With more looking I noticed I was mildly off base, it was about 100px higher. Today, it is expanded more now that they have added the boxes for playlists, tags and loved tracks to this library area. This should be reviewed by staff.

I love the library and want it front and center but I can see how people do not enjoy how it takes up space on the profile, though I think some of our issues are engrained by what the previous iteration of Last.fm displayed.

I mean over the last 5 years of audioscrobbler/Last.fm we have been conditioned that our music tastes are dictated directly by our weekly snapshot and our overall chart, so that's what most of use naturally think we should see first. We have also been conditioned that we must "wait" to see how our weekly listens played out.

I however see the library as a so much more potentially refined thing to show our tastes, of course I do suppose it could do that with a link on the die or with fewer pixels high...

Like Kerensky, though I love this set to last 7 days. It's a much more power weekly chart than the old snapshot, in my humble opinion.

Again, though, something that could sold some of the criticism of the library: Collapsable modules like the previous site had.

I think a tab or link in the menu is sufficient for the Library, mainly because it is not as dynamic as our charts.

If it is to remain on the main page, the pictures need to be smaller. Maybe they could change, reflecting our Recently Played and act as a quilt as well as a link to the Library? An idea?

There are two superbly cool features to the new beta - the Library and Last.fm Recommendations. They are a vast improvement on what we had in the past, without question.
  • I'm a bit amazed too about library and it takes a while to get used to it but I think it's better try it first before you come to whine about it at forums ;D

I didn't like the library much when I first encountered it -- was totally shocking to how my audioscrobbler/last.fm experience had been up til now, but after adjusting I really like it, save for navigating through it.

I confess that I never really got with the tagging movement that came with the last relaunch. I suppose I will have to try Music Brainz, but only after finding that adding tags through the library is really inefficient and frustrating.

    1) When I'm in the music tab of My Library, I can delete an artist or play an artist. But I can't add tags to an artists. I have to click into the artist page. Why can't the tags popup launch from there?

    2) When in the artist page I can add tags, but the tag window doesn't show my available tags -- just "suggested tags" and the sole tag I've previously assigned to favorite artists.

So, I have to try to remember what the hell I've used before... "80s?" "Eighties?" "1980s?" My memory sucks. :/

    3) I'm on the artist page, I've added tags, I've marveled at the wonder of artist page in general, since I've never really visited them before (brilliant move, btw). But how do I get back to *where I was* in my library without using the back button? I can click on '3895739579 plays in your library" and then swing the vine back to the main library, but that is kind of annoying. OR, I can use the drop down nav in the upper right corner, but either way it takes me back to the first page of the library.

I know this was discussed in the beta beating, but I wasn't spending a lot of time in the library yet, so I hadn't noticed. I still think it's great overall, as I can maybe delete the 55 plays of The Muppet Christmas in one fell swoop ;)
