The clown house that used to be on Alberta has moved into the neighborhood however. Portland was on the pioneering forefront of American punk. What eventually became known as grunge started here. Look into Greg Sage and the Wipers for the iconic example. Over the years, Portland has failed to get credit for most of the stuff that got its start here. A blessing more than a curse if you ask me.

Even if it doesn't have a particularly large avant-garde scene, Portland definitely has a lot of variety. Lots of good shows playing most of the time as well.

Well by it's nature, there won't really be a large Avant-Garde scene in one place, because a lot of people are turned by music that it less "tame". The most that could be hoped for is that experimental music could be somewhat more popular then usual, but there are always styles that are underappreciated, but I think that is a good thing. As mainstream usually leads to a watered-down sound. But regardless, Portland is great for music.
