Hitoshi Sakimoto (崎元仁) is a Japanese composer most recognized for his works on Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story, and other Squaresoft productions. He has contributed to more than 100 soundtracks in his career, and most recently has branched out into composing for anime, with Romeo and Juliet.

Sakimoto works both in orchestral and electronic spheres, often fusing the two together, as seen in Vagrant Story and Breath of Fire V. His compositions are often unusually layered and intricate for video game music and utilize classical techniques to shift melody and harmony from section to section, moving listeners away from prizing “catchiness.”

The unique combination of Baroque and contemporary classical influence (especially the ambience and dissonance of recent film scores) led to critical acclaim of his Vagrant Story soundtrack.

His most recent work is composing and producing for the Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire soundtracks with Basiscape, his studio of composers and sound programmers, which includes Masaharu Iwata and other composers who frequently contribute to his works. (read more)
