Tom Gabel started Against Me! in 1997 as a solo act at the age of 17. He would only occasionally perform with support from drummers and/or bassists. This period in the band was marked by playing guerrilla shows in a college apartment complex laundromat, emphasizing the D.I.Y. sentiments of their work. Gabel self-released one demo tape, officially entitled Against Me!, but more commonly known as Tom’s Demo. While copies of the cassette itself are extremely rare, internet file-sharing programs have helped to circulate the songs amongst fans.
Another demo cassette was released the following year on Misanthrope Records, with a slightly more complete band, titled Vivida Vis. Only five hundred copies of this album were made, but file-sharing once again popularized it. Perhaps the most well-known song on the record, “Shit Stroll” is still routinely requested by the audience at Against Me! shows. The band rarely, if ever, obliges these requests.

Whatever you think of New Wave, doing exactly what their fans want wouldn't be too sincere.

New CD can't compare to old stuff, it's only decent at best.

Well music is subjective so I’m “entitled” to my opinion, just as you are. Glad I can drag out the debate more :)

I really like how you think you're entitled to have the final word on what New Wave "is."

I love how people are still debating New Wave, it is what it is, and that's six good songs, and four bad ones. I really like AM! though, always will be sticking with them. However I really get heated when I see them play the same stuff live. Please Please add more elements into the show guys! How about playing Miami, Even At Our Worst, I Still Love You Julie, T.S.R., etc.

new wave is actually a pretty decent album, but it just sounds far too clean and polished to be an against me! album, to be honest. still decent, though.

eh i'm not so sure. New wave is certainly a good cd, its just that the old three are great cds.

The Clash went from playing squats to stadiums too. they went down in history as one of the best and most influential (punk)bands ever.

You know what I hope? I hope they do something original that tops all of their old music instead of trying to recreate something they've already done.
