One of those music surveys
20 Sep 2008, 19:48 by hunnybee7
Because I just feel like doing something completely mindless:
1. What are you listening to right now?
Speak for Me
2. What song makes you sad?
Lots of songs make me sad, for one reason or another.
But I can say that one song that makes me cry without fail is Landslide. My cousin, David, was killed in a car crash a few years ago. He was only 22. We played that song at his funeral, and now I cannot listen to it without aching.
3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
I teach high school. My kids (as in my students) like to listen to hip hop during class. This would not be a problem at all except that the local hip hop station tends to play the same five songs over and OVER!
The one that drove me absolutely crazy last year was Umbrella. If I hear “under my umbrella…ella…ella…” one more time I might just vomit…omit…omit!
4. Your all time favorite?
There is no way that I can choose just one!
5. Your newly discovered band is?
Hmm… Bat For Lashes and Blind Pilot comes to mind.
Oh, and my friends Matt and Kim recently introduced me to Róisín Murphy and Moloko.
6. Best female voice?
Are we talking pure vocal prowess here? If so, Tori Amos – hands down. Rachael Yamagata is a very close second though. Damn those women can sing!
7. Best male voice?
Robert Plant can sing anything and make it sound cool.
And yes, I realize that I’m choosing older artists, and that it probably makes me sound old too – but I don’t really care! Besides, in order to be the “best” at anything, I’m of the opinion you have to EARN it. Therefore, it makes perfect sense in my mind to choose artists who’ve recorded more than two successful albums. :)
8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?
Although I listen to all kinds of music, I’d say that I probably gravitate towards the singer/songwriter types the most often.
9. What do you listen to, to hype you up?
Pretty much anything that is fun or up tempo energizes me. A recent favorite is Vampire Weekend. That album just makes me smile. :)
10. What do you listen to when you want to calm down?
There are some wonderfully mellow folk artists that relax me – Iron & Wine, Alexi Murdoch, Emiliana Torrini, Jim White, Fink, José González, Angus & Julia Stone, Laura Veirs, Nick Drake, Sean Hayes, etc..
My girls Tori, Ani, and Rachael are always good for a rainy day.
But if I need to recalibrate my head, so to speak, I go with electronic bands like Mogwai, Eastern Sun, Lamb, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, The Album Leaf, etc.
11. Last gig/concert you went to?
I think it was Ben Harper. It’s been WAY too long!
12. Band you find yourself listening to the most right now?
I just got Selections From Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart – thanks so much Matt – and it is YUMMY!
13. Most hated band?
Creed, Nickelback, etc. Both of those groups (and others like them) have zero originality heaped with tons of pretension. At least boy bands don’t try to deny that they are formula bands.
14. Song that makes you think?
Lots of music makes me think, so I’m not really sure what this question means.
But I would say that Ani DiFranco is a current artist who consistently puts out music that challenges me to look at life from a different perspective. How about that?
15. Band that you think the world should love as much as you do?
Explosions in the Sky! They are truly AMAZING!
16. Coolest music video?
Does anyone still make those? If so, I don’t watch them. I’m trying to think of a video from way back when that I thought was cool. I’m drawing a blank right now, although I’m sure there were some that I liked.
17. Music video with the most babe watch?
Um…
18. What do you play/would you play in the bedroom to spice things up?
My husband sings to me! *blush*
We do have a couple of sexy homemade mixes that we like to play sometimes – but that would be private.
19. Can you play a musical instrument?
I have a pretty good ear, so I can play the piano a bit. I’m not formally trained on any instrument though, and I really wish that I was.
I am seriously considering taking guitar lessons – if I can just find the time.
20. Ever been in a mosh pit?
Once. It was really fun, but I wouldn’t do it again.
21. Are you in a band?
Sadly, no.
23. Ever dated a musician?
Yup – two actually. One was a drummer and the other played bass guitar.
28. Do you wish that you were a musician?
Who doesn’t???
29. Best chick band you know of?
Metric kicks ass, and they have a female lead singer. Does that count?
31. Last song that you heard on the radio?
It was at school yesterday, and I think it was the new Kanye West song. I don’t know what it is called.
32. What do you think of Classical music?
I love certain classical music. I used to sing it quite frequently in my high school/college years.
33. What do you think of Country music?
The word “despise” comes to mind. However, being a West Texas girl, I can still two-step with the best of them!
34. What do you think of Death metal?
It gives me a headache and makes me irritable.
35. Last BIG band that you saw live?
The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra
36. Are you a groupie?
No.
37. Do you listen to music in foreign languages?
Sure! Good music transcends language.
38. What famous musician would you like to fuck?
Whoa! I didn’t read this carefully enough. I wasn’t expecting the F-bomb!
I’m going to say Eddie Vedder – simply because I’ve been lusting after him the longest. :)
And I'm pretty sure that Sam Beam could seduce me into bed with his poetry if nothing else. *I heart Sam*.
39. Worst concert moment?
I was 19. I got – shall we call it severely “chemically altered” – at a Nine Inch Nails concert in Austin. It was outdoors, at night of course, with lots of other chemically altered freaks running around. I lost my boyfriend, and this skanky-looking perv starting stalking me.
Not fun at all.
40. Funny concert moment?
Austin City Limits Music Festival – giggling, flirting, and dancing with my husband to The Wailers.
41. Sad concert moment?
I had a falling out with a good friend and we hadn’t spoken in a while. We unexpectedly ran into each other at a Tori concert and it was awkward to say the least.
That made me sad.
42. Best local act you can think of?
As mentioned, I’m not a fan of country music, although I do like some alt. country and bluegrass. Still, I have to go with the Dixie Chicks here, because Natalie Maines is a one cool chick!
Also, I have to give a shout out to the Thrift Store Cowboys because I went to high school with them! :)
43. If you were a musical instrument what would you be?
A piano, of course! Preferably a Bosendorfer so Tori could “play” me. *wink*
44. Do you listen to the radio?
I listen to NPR all the time, and sometimes college radio or Sirius.
45. Do you watch music TV?
No. Once again, is there such a thing anymore?
46. Do you follow the music charts, like the top 40?
No, I could care less what is popular. I listen to what I LIKE.
47. Have you met any famous musicians?
Yes! I’ve met Donavan Frankenreiter, G. Love – minus his special sauce, Jeff Tweedy, and Tori Amos.
Oh, and I’ve corresponded with Anisa Romero (from Sky Cries Mary) via email enough (regarding a painting I commissioned her to do) that I think that should count!
48. Are any of your friends/family/etc. musicians?
Yes.
49. Song that best describes your feelings right now?
Sunday Afternoon
Just the music – the SOUND – not really the lyrics though.
50. Song that describes your life?
Hmm…do I want to answer this question? Oh, why not?
I’m in an interesting place these days, and I’m not totally sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. But if you want a mental snapshot of my take on my life RIGHT NOW, the song that comes to mind is In The Margins
such an intent stare
one eye at a time
your talons like fish hooks
you are a rare bird
the kind i wouldn't even mind
writing in the margins of my books
sometimes i see myself
through the eyes of a stray dog
from an alley across the street
and my whole mission just seems so finite
my whole saga just seems so cheap
i mean i know that now is all there is
and love will just make you cry
so i live for the sight of a rare bird
suddenly flying by
and i meet your stare
one eye at a time
writing in the margins of my mind
sometimes i see myself
through the eyes of a stray dog
from an alley across the street
and my whole mission just seems so finite
my whole saga just seems so cheap
and that's when your song calls to me
from way up in a tree
and i look up
and the whole world
is as it should be
51. Do you know the names of all the band members that you listen to?
No. I listen to way too much music to remember all of them.
52. Does a musician’s physical attractiveness play a role in the music that you listen to?
No, not at all – though eye candy is never a bad thing!
53. What famous musician do you want to marry?
I’m already happily married. :)
53. Favorite movie soundtrack?
"Across the Universe"!
55. Any musician pet hates?
Misogynist lyrics.
Trashy little girls who think they are women and think they can sing when neither is true.
Angry, whiny teen music.
Redneck country music, like Toby Keith.
56. What do your parents listen to?
Honestly, my mother mostly listens to Christian music these days.
However, I grew up listening to classic country/folk artists like Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. They’re both pretty cool I think.
She also played a lot of cheesy 70’s pop like Sonny & Cher, Bread, Bee Gees, and Carpenters. Thanks to Mom, I can sing every single word to every song Karen Carpenter ever uttered. LOL!
Oh, I cannot forget Elvis Presley. We both love Elvis!
She did have flashes of brilliant musical taste with Janis Joplin, The Who, and The Rolling Stones. Oddly, I actually introduced her to Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and The Beatles because I could not stand it that she hadn’t found her way to them by herself.
57. What are you listening to right NOW?
Elephants -
Just another lyrics game.

7. If only they could see, if only they had been here
They would understand, how someone could have chosen
To go the length I've gone, to spend just one day riding
Holding on to you, I never thought it would be this clear.

Overall Top Artists Analyse mit Derhard Gelling und Nünther Getzer
10 Jul 2008, 20:42 by cotisueltosmrz
Gelling: Herzlich willkommen, liebe Zuschauer.
Gelling: Ein Wort zu State Radio?
A Weekend In the City stammen.
Machen Sie's gut, hauen Sie rein. Bis bald.

Music in the year 2007. Saw it written and I saw it say :)
28 Dec 2007, 09:43 by brushfired
My first journal.. so here we go,
I would like to put here my personal favs in 2007 and at the same time to recommend you some music...
Best Foreign Band : The Arcade Fire with the album Neon Bible.
Their second album is going to be a really masterpiece
of this genre in the future, I'm sure ;)
Check out the song Neon Bible playin' in an elevator!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wjxef8AfVQg
Best Foreign Singer-Songwriter : Josh Ritter with his album The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter.

One of those great talented guys - singer-songwriters nowadays.
He's like a new Bob Dylan mixed with Leonard Cohen.
And his talent still grows...
Best Soundtrack : The Fountain OST by a musician and composer Clint Mansell.

The movie is itself very good but the music is better :)
Best Post-Rock Sensation : Explosions in the Sky and their fascinating album called All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.

Without any voices and how it works? Perfectly.
Best Group Discovery : The band called The National with another wonderful album Boxer.

Sufjan Stevens as a quest on a piano in two nice (of overall 12 wonderful) songs, Ada and Racing Like A Pro.
Best Artist Discovery : Alexi Murdoch with his debut album Time Without Consequence (2006).

Nick Drake's finger-picking style and José González's feeling. Very characterful style.
Shine
:
"and so you hide your eyes
you're afraid that the light
will make you blind
but it's time
it's time to shine"
Best czech Enterprise : Tata Bojs with their album Kluci kde ste? (Guys, where are ya?)

Not like their previous stuff but still very good.
Best Song Overall : Oh, it's so hard to pick just one song, cause it's changin' every day but this year, I'll go for The National's song Mistaken for Strangers off the Boxer album.

It's a modern rock song, like better Interpol.
Greatest Surprise : The Good, The Bad & The Queen - The Good, The Bad & The Queen.

Damon Albarn's next musical project, nothing like Gorillaz or Blur, it's more sophisticated (thanks to that star team).
Best Concert DVD : Sigur Rós with their stunning DVD called Heima, Home in English.

Sigur Rós's first DVD is totally gorgeous. It's more than just MUSIC, it's also consonance of people with beautiful Icelandic landscapes and of course, with the music of Sigur Rós. Heavenly.
Best Album Overall : Lifeline by Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals.
What can I say about this album full of love and humanity. This is it!
It was completely recorded in only 7 days and without any computers! Thanks Mr. Harper. My soul is filled.
