Anton Webern (December 3, 1883 – September 15, 1945) was an Austrian composer. He was a member of the Second Viennese School. As a student and significant follower of Arnold Schönberg, he became one of the best-known proponents of the twelve-tone technique; in addition, his innovations regarding schematic organization of pitch, rhythm and dynamics were formative in the musical style later known as serialism.

He was and is considered the link between pre-war and post-war musics. He is very important, his music is unique relative to every other music, (especially the music of his time.)

Yes. I've only been listening to Webern for the past 3 weeks, and he's already my 5th most listened to artist. I do not really understand why his fan base is so small.

xenakis wrote:
Anyway, why he has only 95 thousand scrobbles on last.fm? I would expect more. Even when his pieces are that short. :)

IAmKing wrote:
Webern´s pieces seems to be from other world, like created by some very introvert person, I get a strong sense of that from Webern's music too. Its a very attractive quality.

I´m new to Webern, but I feel like I´m in love with his deconstruction. A prefer him to Schoenberg. Webern´s pieces seems to be from other world, like created by some very introvert person, someone who tries to say something that can´t be said. That´s the goal of most of modern classical music, and Webern is one of those who opened the doors. Timeless and visionary.

well, brave, nowadays i would say: he didnt have a noise gear. whats the average rns power of 5 pieces for orchestra? its one thing weak. the machines in the 21st century are non-repetitive, serial and n-tone.

I agree with andresgualdron agreeing with me. In summary, we should expect a low level of discourse in the shout box but still be elitist pricks about our taste in music. I'm sure you all would agree. By the way, the Beatles and Radiohead are fine but totally overrated. Take that, commonly held values! Roar.

I'm the top lister of Webern this week and I've been studing him really hard the past weeks... and I also enjoy punk music, jazz, folk, hip hop, rock, pop... i'm with essron, elitism should die.

essron wrote:
I love Webern and all, but isn't it rather silly to think a classical shout box should for some reason require more dignified discourse? Its like those folks who think because they buy some opera CDs and a copy of Kind of Blue which they will never listen to more than half of, that they are somehow sophisticated adults. Jazz lovers and classisists do tend to be unnecessarily elitist. Like me.
