Italy (1678 – 1741)
Vivaldi was born on 4th March 1678 in Venice, Italy; his father was Giovanni Battista, a barber before becoming a professional violinist, who taught his son to play violin; they subsequently toured Venice playing violin together. Vivaldi suffered from asthma; this did not, however, prevent him from learning to play the violin, composing and taking part in the prescribed musical activities. At the age of fifteen he began studying to become a priest. In 1703, at the age of 25, he was ordained, and was soon nicknamed “Il Prete Rosso”, “The Red Priest”, probably because of his red hair.
Not long afterwards, in 1704, he was given a dispensation from celebrating the Mass because of his ill health. In late 1706 he withdrew from the priesthood and became maestro di violino at an orphanage for girls called the Pio Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. Shortly after his appointment, the orphans began to gain appreciation and esteem abroad, too; Vivaldi wrote for them many concertos and cantatas, and much sacred music. In 1705, the first collection of his works was published, followed by many others. At the orphanage he covered several different duties, only interrupting them for his many travels. In 1709, he lost his position for economic reasons but in 1711, he was offered the job again, and in 1713 became responsible for the musical activity of the institute.

God, I laughed pretty hard when I saw that he's touring. My favourite is Winter, maybe because of the movie Oldboy, but yeah, Autumn comes close second.

I don’t believe the Vivaldi’s works are just slight variations of them. If some parts of The Four Seasons are similars it’s ‘coz they’re a sequel (spring, summer,…) Listen to others pieces to eliminate this doubt :)

... I mean, no doubt about Vivaldi's talent. In my view, creativity implies originality, which is easier than re-creating out of one theme, one keynote or even a dozen of words, just working repetitions. Examples??? Carmen by Bizet, 6th Symphony by Beethoven, Samba de uma nota só (One keynote samba) by Tom Jobim, "No meio do caminho tinha uma pedra tinha uma pedra no meio do caminho"-a poem by Drummond. curly1721, we both are talking about geniality. Period.

When you think that Vivaldi's work continues to inspire these centuries later, including metal bands such as Children Of Bodom (don't worry, I didn't learn about Vivaldi through them), it gives you and idea as to how much of a landmark his pieces were. Hardly anyone can transcend time like this with just music.

They say that Vivaldi made a whole career out of one theme, played over and over with slight variations. Maybe so, but can anyone listen to The Four Seasons and not be moved? They said it about Elmore James too! So what?

Undead vivaldi playing the violin, would be amazing.

My guess is the "on tour" is for performances of his work, not performances by him personally, which can't happen obviously.

"Transformative music always seems to be very exciting." You nailed it, from classical to contemporary music, Beethoven to Black Sabbath, this holds true. There are something divine about those who pave new ground, still being chained by their past and contemporaries.

SirAlecHendrix wrote:
"Vivaldi was always the sexiest baroque composer." yes, he transcended the baroque style, in fact his music isn't baroque any more but in a more Galante (sensitive, melody-driven) style which paved the way to the (Viennese) classical era of mozart and haydn. vivaldi's music is neither baroque nor classical. transformative music always seems to be very exciting.
