My Top 7 Albums of 2007 (Revisited)
27 Aug 2008, 13:57 by BlackCoffeeDuck
I wrote a top ten at the end of 2007 but now I’m going revisit it because I’ve got seven albums that I love that didn’t get in to it. Stuff that for one reason or another I wanted but didn’t get around to getting.
#7. Kala
Second Album maybe not as good as M.I.A.’s first but with song like Bird Flu and Paper Planes is still album I love some much.
#6. Live From Austin, TX
This is a live recording from 2001 but not released until last year. I seen David Byrne live around this time, not this gig but very close. I love it when you can get something to remember a show you when to.
#5. I’m Not There (Music From The Motion Picture)
For the biopic about Bob Dylan staring the late Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett. With Dylan covers which some are great: Mark Lanegen, Cat Power, The Black Keys and Antony and the Johnsons but some totally miss: Eddie Vedder but with Bob Dylan and The Band’s I’m Not There finally officially released I love it.
#4. Jean Lee and the Yellow dog
First album by Ed Kuepper in five years is loosely based on the story of the last woman hanged in Australia. With The Saints’s Chris Bailey singing on That Depends Pt 3, Dirty Three’s Warren Ellis playing violin on Miracles, The Go-Betweens’s Finding You covered and Jeffrey Wegener from Laughing Clowns playing Drums this is one hell of a comeback album.
#3. Release The Stars
Rufus Wainwright just gets better and better with every new album. His next one could be his Masterpiece, this is very close but not perfect. I still love it, love him, he’s one of the greatest songwriter around now.
#2. Good Girl Gone Bad
I love Rihanna, she’s the best R&B / Pop star in a long time. This is her third album in three years and her next one out next year too. She just released a live DVD too.
#1. in rainbows
Radiohead released one of the great albums of all time. I don’t really have to say anymore, Do I? -
CDs for Erin Epley (2008), pt. 1
20 Aug 2008, 22:21 by gradmusicfan
Every year, I make some CDs for my friend Erin and they generally turn out to be the best mixes I ever make. This year, in my not so humble opinion, is not an exception. Since these mixes were a birthday present, they had the formidable task of standing up to the gift of a Growing Pains DVD a few years back.
CD #1: 2008
Note that I don't think any of these songs are from 2008. Whenever I try to make those types of list, they are usually substandard and I wind up throwing them away. I gave it the name of 2008 simply because it was for her birthday in 2008.
1. "Goin' to Acapulco," by Jim James & Calexico
I finally watched Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There a week or so ago and I think it's absolutely incredible and required viewing for any Dylanologist. Just don't think you're going to be watching a straight ahead documentary (the characters are part of the Dylan pathos and mythology not Dylan himself).
Since I already included the incredible scene of this song from the movie in an earlier post, I thought I'd post a full live version of what I am assuming is My Morning Jacket--but I have no clue

2. "The Devil" PJ Harvey
This song is completely haunting and if you don't find yourself going full force into the climax and shaking upon shifting into its' denouement, then I feel sorry for you.

3. "I Never Loved a Man (The Way That I Love You)," Aretha Franklin
4. "Summersend," Misha
Free Download
Misha--Summersend mp3
5. "Roscoe," Midlake
I think this is one of the best songs I have ever heard. Bar none. This group is from Denton, TX.

6. "Stuck Between Stations," The Hold Steady
I know, I know. Why not pick a song off of Stay Positive since it's from 2008? Well, I have to be deliberately defiant. Plus, this is my favorite Hold Steady song (other than "Hot Fries" which is already on prior Erin compilations).
7. "Hopscotch Willie," Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Finally one from this year! This makes the list because Erin and I were jamming to it on the long road trip between through the deserts between the Holbrook and Flagstaff, AZ.
Malkmus's latest offering, incidentally, is simply fucking powerful and the best guitar record to come out in some time.
8. "I Thought I Saw Your Face Today," She & Him
2 in a row from 2008! For those of you that still don't know, this is actress Zooey Deschanel and full-time musician M. Ward.
Deschanel's voice is like thick honey and she could pour it over me any time she wished!
This is really on here as an excuse for me to look at pictures of Deschanel.

9. "Inflammatory Writ," Joanna Newsom
This is just weird enough to be perfect.
10. "Sweet Lady Genevieve," The Kinks
I think the Kinks are the most underrated band of all time.
11. "Duluth," Mason Jennings
Jennings voice is the real weapon in all of his songs, and I think it's what separates him from the generic crap that he is sometimes compared to (i.e. Jack Johnson). I bet you that Jack Johnson would be a great guy to hang out with, but his music is insufferably boring. John Mayer is a guy that should be ran over repeatedly. Some blues noodling while making yourself look like a circus freak achieving an orgasm does not redeem the endless piles of crap that guy churns out.
But I digress...
12. "Smelling Cigarettes," Fiery Furnances
13. "Just Like a Woman," Charlotte Gainsbourg & Calexico
Gainsbourg's performance in I'm Not There was simply outstanding. So is this rendition of an all time Dylan classic.
14. "Books Written for Girls," Camera Obscura

15. "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" The Velvet Underground
16. "Some Velvet Morning," Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood
17. "Hope There's Someone," Antony and the Johnsons
18. "Ballerina," Van Morrison -

First, make a list of your top20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

My Favourite Bands
15 Aug 2008, 15:50 by Irryco
Hi.
I plan to list my top bands. Needless to say it is extremely hard to rank them, and very much depends on my general mood where I place them all so in a month or even in a weak it might look completely different, and then I will certainly regret this list. But this is how I feel today; August the 15th 2008.
And excuse me for every spelling and grammatical mistake, I’m not English you know, and I don’t have the time to read this over and over looking for minor or less minor mistakes, you’ll have to try surviving them instead. Perhaps I’ll correct some of them later on. : )
1.Bright Eyes
Considering my charts you might think it was obvious for me to choose Bright Eyes on the first place, but, well, that would be far from the truth. But after all I do place them here because of three albums: Letting off the happiness, Fevers and Mirrors and Lifted… All three of them are among my absolute favourite albums, and if you feel down there exist no better albums to listen to. And everyone do feel down every now and then, it’s perfectly normal and nothing wrong with, and there’s no need to use words like “emo” and pronounce it with hatred in your voice. No, no, no need at all. Three master pieces which you can relate to every now and then. I like all other albums he has made too, A collection of… involves some really weak tracks but also some great, and even though I find Cassadaga to be a bit in the wrong direction I still consider it a very good album. So all in all, Bright Eyes deserve being my number one top artist.
Favourite album: Fevers and Mirrors.
Favourite song: Can’t decide
2- Sigur Rós
Yeah, there are definitely days when I think they beat everything, and when I saw them live I just thought that there’s nothing in the whole world more beautiful. And that is the truth, I place them on the second place, but they still make more beautiful music than Bright Eyes will ever do. And they aren’t worse now than when they began, as with Bright Eyes, the only album I have some problems with is Von, their first, and their latest, Med spilum… is just as terrific as the rest. Perhaps one could say that they reached their peak with ( ), but that wouldn’t be all of the truth, because I’m not even certain that it is their best, and Med spilum… could even, in my own ears, be better than it. Love. <3
Favourite album: ( )
Favourite song: Dauðalagið
3 The Smiths
(First I need to mention Morrisseys’s solo career that is something you just got to listen to if you love The Smiths, even if it is not as good generally, it is close to being it and instead of giving him a fourth or fifth place I’ll mention him here, seeing how connected these two are. )
The Smiths released four studio albums, and all of them are among the best I’ve heard, hardly including any bad songs. They got sad songs for depressing days, and they got more or less happy songs for good ones, to be honest, I think they got everything you can ask of a band and together with Sigur Rós and Bright Eyes they competed for the first place, and on a different day they might even have won it. : )
Favourite album: The Queen Is Dead
Favourite song: I Know It’s Over
4 The Knife
The most original, interesting and groundbreaking band that exist today, I’d say. The only bad thing is that I really need a new album because I’ve listened far too much to the three they’ve released so far, and there’s just so many times you can listen to an album no matter how good it is. Silent Shout is one of the best albums that has ever been made, by the way.
Favourite album: Silent Shout
Favourite song:
The Captain
5 Kent
I got a lot to thank Kent for, the band that made me love music. There’s a lot you can dislike them for, still, there’s even more reasons to love them. Albums like Isola, Hagnesta Hill and Du & Jag döden make it possible to forget and forgive crappy albums like Vapen & Amuunition and Tillbaka till samtiden. I wish people could stop playing their songs on the radio all of the time, and I wish Kent could make another less mainstream album. But eventually they will make it into my playlist again. At the moment they also remind me of things that I’d rather not be reminded of, but I hope that will pass eventually too… but at the mean time I’m sad to say that you have to play your songs elsewhere Jocke Berg, just not on the radio … please…
Favourite album: Hagnesta Hill
Favourite Song:
Mannen i den vita hatten (16 år senare)
6. Broder Daniel
RIP Anders Göthberg, and RIP Broder Daniel. I place them this high in my top list for extremely emotional music that can leave no one indifferent. You hate them or you love them. I do love them, but hate is at least better and stronger than indifference, because hate is something you won’t forget. You will live on in our hearts forever, and thank you for all your fantastic music that makes rainy days so much easier.
Favourite album: Broder Daniel Forever
Favourite Song: I’ll be gone
7 Antony and the Johnsons
I think that once they have released one or two more albums they will be even higher. It is very hard for an artist with only two to come on a seventh place, but Antony has succeeded in just that, thanks to two marvellous albums, and a voice that goes straight into your heart.
Favourite Album: I Am a Bird Now
Favourite Song: Hope There’s Someone (<3<3<3)
8 David & the Citizens
If you want to listen to great Swedish indie bands this is one of those you should begin with. : )
Favourite Album: Until the Sadness is Gone
Favourite Song:
Song Against Life
9 Honey is Cool
Well, this is not The Knife. But it is Karin, and that is more than enough for me. <3 And they are terrific in their own way and not to be compared with The Knife.
Favourite album: Early Morning Are You Working
Favourite Song: Another Round
10 Portishead
Ah, this is all about her voice and the dark atmosphere in the sound, is it possible not to love? <3
Favourite album: Third
Favourite song:

unfinished survey
6 Aug 2008, 10:58 by childvagabond
1. How did you get into 29?
I got into Charles Manson after hearing Devendra Banhart's cover of "
Home is Where You're Happy." I read up on Charlie's musical history and life, and was fascinated by the beauty of his vision and perspective. It's a shame that most people are taught to fear this man for his actions, and never look beyond the scapegoat status that society has forced onto him.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
I'm not positive which John Fahey song i heard first, but it may have been "
Lion" off of a compilation of Devendra related music. John Fahey easily became my favorite guitarist.
3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
Something about Arcade Fire that makes them very special to me is how much of their lyrics I sung in my heart before hearing their songs, so picking a favorite lyric is nearly impossible. If I must, however, I'll say "I'm livin' in an age/that calls darkness light/though my language is dead/still its shapes fill my head" from "
My Body Is a Cage." So much from Funeral means a lot to me, also. "Tunnels" especially.
4. What is your favorite album by 49?
The Allman Brothers Band's Eat a Peach or At Fillmore East.
5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Two by The Strokes: Is This It and Room on Fire.
6. What is your favorite song by 50?
"
Bat Macumba" by Os Mutantes because it's so fun to sing. Hard to choose, though.
7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
Definitely. It's a shame that Ramblin' Jack Elliott is so low on my chart, he means a lot to me. When I saw him play last winter in Berkeley (one of the most beautiful experiences I've been a part of), he ended with "
South Coast," that last note echoing into the universe, never ending, and tears in my eyes.
8. What is your favorite album by 15?
Beirut's The Flying Club Cup.
9. What is your favorite song by 5?
I can't answer this. Kevin Barnes is a genius, I mean it, and of Montreal supports him perfectly. Lyrics, melody, everything. I won't even try to pick one.
10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
YES. Marc Bolan, another genius. T. Rex makes me happy and feel the need to move. I'd say "
Mambo Sun" and "The Slider" make me happiest.
11. What is your favorite album by 41?
Really the only album I've listened to of Jens Lekman is Oh You're So Silent Jens, a very beautiful album.
12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Beck! I'd say "
Debra" or "
E-Pro," but there are so so many.
13. What is a good memory you have involving 31?
Hmmm...Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons was there for me during my first dives into "Freak Folk," so I definitely have great memories of learning and loving his voice, all the beautiful and unique voices of these golden souls.
14. What is your favorite song by 38?
From Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II? I think "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Edelweiss."
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Mmmm, Caetano Veloso. Is there ever, lol. The first is definitely "
Lost in the Paradise," then "
The Empty Boat" and "Sozinho." "Paradise" is, I completely believe, a perfect song. And "Sozinho" is a river of lightly floating blood, pure and clear.
16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
David Bowie...never, lol.
17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Cold War Kids.
18. What is your favorite album by 11?
The Black Keys
19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
DEVENDRA BANHART - um... devendra i suppose.

005 Metric
006 Stars
007 Kylie Minogue

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
I think it was "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead", because Set Yourself On Fire was the first album I bought by them.
What is your favorite album of 2?
So far, I've gotta go with "If It Was You", followed closely by "The Con".
What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
I'm going with anything from the songs "Combat Baby" and "The Police and the Private".
How many times have you seen 4 live?
Never :[ But if she ever tours again (as in makes music again) I'm so there.
What is your favorite song by 7?
It's gotta be "In My Arms", I love it so much, I could listen to that song ten times in a row...and actually have! hahaha, followed closely by "Burning Up" and "Fever".
Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
A lot, actually...specifically though "Hello Birminghan", "Two Little Girls", and "You Had TIme" always choke me up a bit. "Hypnotized" also makes me a little sad, in a very nostalgic way...
What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
"So come on kids, eat those pills, we've got a whole life to lose." but seriously, Tegan and Sara are amazing writers, any of their lyrics are pretty great.
What is your favorite song by 9?
Honestly, the entirety of their self-titled album is my all time favorite Broken Social Scene musical experience. That album is just so epic, but if I had to choose, I'd say "Fire Eye'd Boy" and the combo "Windsurfing Nation" and "Swimmers".
How did you get into 3?
I'm queer LOL. End discussion. Actually, it took me awhile still to fully realize Ani, I think what pushed me was just knowing how epic she is, and not knowing anything about her really, other than her affinity with queer/women's rights.
What was the first song you heard by 1?
:] Oh gosh, I believe it was either "The Execution of All Things" or "Paint's Peeling". Both...most excellent. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction.
What is your favorite song by 4?
Well, from her first album it was either "That Girl" or "Indigo Boy", which I relate greatly to both of those songs, and they're just so smooth and awesome...really easy to chill to. Definitely smoking songs lol. From her second album, I'd say "We R In Need of a Musical ReVoLuTiOn" (yeah, spelled that way heh) is my favorite, because it gets me going, really great message about music and pop and how monotonous it is. That song is what made me fall in love with Esthero.
How many time have you seen 9 live?
None :[ Yet!!
Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
"Sandalwood" is definitely one of them...but I also got into Lisa at a really depressing point in my life, so everything she does is tinged with a small piece of sadness. Especially anything off her "Best of" compilation.
What is your favorite album of 5?
Well. Hmmm, that's a tough call. I think I'm gonna have to go with "Old World Underground Where Are You Now?", just because I had a really great experience wandering around certain train tracks, jumping from boxcar roof to boxcar roof, headphones and scarf snuggly in place. It was one of the best nights of my life, and Metric's "Old World Underground..." was a part of that.
What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
"I was blessed with a birth and a death, and I guess I just want some say inbetween." I'm getting that tattooed somewhere on my body eventually lol
What is your favorite song of 1?
"The Frug" is classic...but I'm gonna lean more towards "A Better Son/Daughter". A few months ago I might've said "Love and War (11/11/46)", but I really got into the album "Execution of All Things" after seeing them live at the end of May.
What is your favorite song of 10?
FINALLY a question about Björk!! I'd say It's a straight up tie between "Army of Me" (kick ass video, btw!), the impermeable perfection of "All Is Full of Love", and "My Juvenile"/"Dull Flame of Desire" (I fucking LOVE the work she did with Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons fame) on "Volta").
How many times have you seen 1 live?
Once!
What is your favorite album of 1?
I'm still sticking with "More Adventurous", but right now, I'm more apt to be listening to "Execution of All Things", just because I'm rediscovering it all over again. However, there's no question about the fact that Jenny Lewis' vocals are BANG ON perfect on "More Adventurous" (surpassed only in her collab solo album "Rabbit Fur Coat", with the Watson Twins)
What was the first song you heard by 8?
Oh definitely "Stay (I Miss You)". Great song :] -

Medicine Jar ,
Pretty Like Drugs ,
In Red ...
