Au is the work of multi-instrumentalist Luke Wyland. Begun back in 2005 while finishing up his degree from the Massachussetts College of Art and moved across the country to find its roots in the thriving community of Portland, OR. It’s now a working live band with an ever changing roster of players that currently includes Dana Valatka on drums (Jackie-O Motherfucker… , Mustaphamond), Becky Dawson on vocals, flute and more (Ah Holly Fam’ly, Saw Whet), and Jeremy Faulkner on guitar, vocals, flute and more (Ah Holly Fam’ly) - and has been blessed by the help of Mark Kaylor (Hammer of Hathor, CexFucx), Jonathan Sielaff and Sarah Winchester (A Weather) on it’s recordings. It’s sound is vast and “deftly treads a narrow bridge between the loose-associations of the backwoods freak-folk crowd and the more formalized concoctions of art-poppers like Brian Eno.” Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, the band has been busy touring the West Coast and the Northeast while playing with such national acts as Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Blitzen Traper, Phosphorescent, Fleet Foxes, Eric Bachmann, Castanets, Tara Jane O’Neil, and Tom Carter (Charalambides)- to name a few. Its debut album was praised by such media centers as Pitchfork, Paperthinwalls, Treblezine, and Stereogum; and was named #2 Portland Album of 2007 by the Portland Mercury. (read more)
