(1966 – present)
The band was started in 1966 by John Lees (vocals, guitars), Les Holroyd ( bass, guitars, keyboards, vocals), Stuart “Woolly” Wolstenholme (vocals, keyboards), and Mel Pritchard (drums, percussion). They released their self-titled debut in 1970, and achieved a degree of success (in the U.K. at least) with their second album, Once Again, which featured the acoustic song “Mocking Bird”. Their subsequent albums had moderate success in the U.K., and did even better on the European mainland, especially in Germany, where the band played a concert for an estimated crowd of 250,000 in 1980. By that time the band was down to a trio (Lees, Holroyd, nad Pritchard) with guest musicians filling in other parts.
The band effectively split into two in 1998, with John Lees and Woolly Wolstenholme teaming up again, and now using the name “John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest”. Les Holroyd and Mel Pritchard formed a new band called “Barclay James Harvest Featuring Les Holroyd”, which continues in spite of Pritchard’s death in 2004. Wolstenholme also has a side project/band called Maestoso (or Woolly Wolstenholme’s Maestoso).

Other than Live from 1974 I'm not impressed. But that live album has an energy... and over-use of mellotron! Awesome!
