    17 Aug 2008, 18:29 by Keltena

For each of your top 20 artists, name:
    - The first song you heard by them
    - The song that made you fall in love with them
    - Your current favorite song by them

    1. Vienna Teng
First song you heard: PlayLullaby For A Stormy Night
Song you fell in love with: PlayLullaby For A Stormy Night
Current favorite song: PlayLullaby For A Stormy Night
    Well... that was simple.

    2. Lemon Demon
First song you heard: PlayWord Disassociation
Song you fell in love with: PlayI've Got Some Falling to Do
    Current favorite song: PlayFine
    That song > you. Seriously.

    3. Evanescence
First song you heard: PlayBring Me to Life
Song you fell in love with: PlayEverybody's Fool
Current favorite song: PlayImaginary (the version on Origin, that is)
Bring Me To Life... ick. Also, I'm kind of surprised Evanescence is higher up than Leaves' Eyes.

    4. Leaves' Eyes
    First song you heard: Elegy
Song you fell in love with: Senses Capture
    Current favorite song: Mourning Tree
I love all of the songs listed above, but Mourning Tree is just beautiful. (It also goes up to the 16th guitar fret. Dx)

    5. Simon & Garfunkel
First song you heard: PlayScarborough Fair/Canticle
Song you fell in love with: PlayI Am a Rock
Current favorite song: PlayI Am a Rock
<3. That is all that need be said.

    6. Studio Pixel
First song you heard: Cave Story (Theme Song)
Song you fell in love with: On to Grasstown
    Current favorite song: Moonsong
Most of Cave Story's soundtrack is fantastic, but Moonsong just beats it all. Who knew chiptunes could be so beautiful?

    7. Jonathan Larson
First song you heard: PlaySeasons of Love
Song you fell in love with: PlaySeasons of Love
Current favorite song: PlayLa Vie Boheme
That last one did not require much thinking. Seasons of Love because I played the piano part (sort of) for a camp performance~

    8. Mary Chapin Carpenter
First song you heard: PlayThe Bug
Song you fell in love with: PlayHe Thinks He'll Keep Her
Current favorite song: PlayHe Thinks He'll Keep Her
If you don't know this song, you should listen to it. Now. Catchy and awesome lyrics.

    9. Nightwish
    First song you heard: PlayWishmaster
Song you fell in love with: PlayShe Is My Sin
Current favorite song: PlayDeep Silent Complete
Last one simply because it's so pretty. Also, I shall never hear Wishmaster ever in my life without hearing the misheard lyrics.

    10. Within Temptation
First song you heard: PlayStand My Ground
Song you fell in love with: PlayMemories
Current favorite song: PlayNever Ending Story
Silly Pandora radio, not playing the awesome tracks from Mother Earth. Then again, I guess they aren't exactly similar to the other stuff I listen to...

    11. Joni Mitchell
First song you heard: Big Yellow Taxi
Song you fell in love with: The Circle Game
Current favorite song: Big Yellow Taxi
I remember when I was really little and we sang Big Yellow Taxi at camp. Now the camp I go to sings Circle Game. Funny.

    12. Gyakuten Saiban Appellate Project
    First song you heard: Objection
Song you fell in love with: The Steel Samurai
Current favorite song: Naruhodou And His Piano (Gyakuten Sisters Piano Ballad)
They remix Ace Attorney music, and I have no clue what they call themselves really because my stupid mp3 tags got messed up.

    13. Tom Lehrer
First song you heard: PlayThe Elements
Song you fell in love with: PlayThe Vatican Rag
Current favorite song: PlayPoisoning Pigeons in the Park
Tom Lehrer in general is just epic win, and if you have not heard of him your life is sadly lacking.

    14. Vertical Horizon
First song you heard: Everything You Want
Song you fell in love with: Everything You Want
Current favorite song: Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)
Non-whiny breakup songs are so nice~

    15. Barenaked Ladies
First song you heard: Too Little Too Late
Song you fell in love with: Falling for the First Time
    Current favorite song: PlayPinch Me
Yay apathy! Funny story: my mom's entire perception of the world was shattered when she learned they weren't actually ladies. =3

    15. Plumb
    First song you heard: Better
Song you fell in love with: Better
    Current favorite song: Manic
You should listen to Manic, 'tis quite nice. Also you should have heard of Plumb, which you haven't, because she's really good.

  • those songs that I would like to take with me into the future

    15 Aug 2008, 01:26 by amanda_enigma

My musical history is full of obscure, but nonetheless, fantastic songs that either came and went so quickly that they were doomed to fade from memory, or those that time is simply washing away, no matter their popularity at the time. I would desperately like to remember those for the future, so I'm listing them here.

As a child, I came across these in miscellaneous mix tapes and such. I would have fabulous concerts to there beats; having no idea to their real meanings.
    So Happy Together
    PlayI Think We're Alone Now
    PlayIncense and Peppermints
    Cars
    PlayIn the Air Tonight
    Windy
    PlayFire and Rain

Then of course in elementary school I was into the obscenely poppy music of the Spice Girls and Britney Spears. More notably I fondly remember listening to Ray of Light and Loreena McKennitt. My mother also loved the song PlayI Knew I Loved You notably.

And then came 5th grade when I started my first real mix tapes put together from the few radio stations that I could pull in from where I lived.
    Otherside
    Scar Tissue
    PlaySomewhere Out There
    PlayDrive
    PlayKryptonite
    PlayHigher
    PlayLearn to Fly
    PlayBlack Balloon
    PlayIris
    PlayHanging by a Moment
    In the End
    PlayDrops of Jupiter
    Everything You Want
    PlayOne Headlight
    PlayOrdinary Day
    PlayAll You Wanted
    PlayA Thousand Miles
    PlayComplicated
    PlayUnderneath Your Clothes
    PlayJust Like A Pill
    PlayRapture
    PlayI Turn to You
    PlayDays Go By
    PlayHeaven
    PlayOne Week
    PlayPinch Me
    To Where You Are
    PlayBigger Than My Body
    PlayBrand New Day
    PlayFields of Gold

Next came middle school. My musical taste were influenced mostly by adult swim (which introduced me to Daft Punk, which I think I listened to more repetitiously than even AFI perhaps. Also notably, Gorillaz.) and two mix cds I came across, one was given to me, the other I had to return and therefor have lost all those tracks to time. It took me up until recently to discover what all the tracks were, but here they are:
    PlayCrawling in the Dark
    No Leaf Clover
    Nothing Else Matters
    PlayDig
    PlayKick Some Ass
    PlayStick 'Em Up
    Lookaway
    Spit It Out
    PlaySurfacing
    Wait and Bleed
    People=Shit
    My Plague
    PlayBlack and White
    PlayThe Way You Like It
    Where's Your Head At?

From there, I went more in the direction of Basement Jaxx and owned Ace, Who needs guitars anyways?, Illusion, Dance Club 2001, and some others. Songs of which are notable:
    PlayWe Are Alive
    PlayDon't Give Up
The last cd that I bought that was reminiscent of this stage before entering the next was probably the Queer Eye Soundtrack.
    PlayThe Boys of Summer

And then I believe it was towards the end of my Freshman year of high school that I began really discovering music. I began to get into AFI and my passion for music really began to blossom. I began to spend all the time I could sequester watching music videos on Fuse (before its ruin) and recording them on a mix tape video of sorts. I began gathering my friends cds and burning them for myself. It was a very magical time and probably the most heavily influential time on my musical tastes that I have yet encountered. I still enjoy this genre the best and follow these bands with a sort of religious devotion (although not the insane devotion I held in the first years of this transformation).
As I near the present and my memory is better intact, my lists shall get longer and more in depth. As this was certainly an explosion in musical exploration, no doubt it will be epic.
    PlayMeant to Live
    PlayLove Song
    PlaySilver and Cold
    PlayRapid Hope Loss
    PlayOcean Avenue
    PlayHeadstrong
    PlayI Hate Everything About You
    PlayOne Thing
I Believe in a Thing Called Love

  • Stuff about my top artists.

    17 Dec 2007, 23:24 by AnaAerophina

    1-They Might Be Giants
-The first song I remember hearing by them would be PlayExperimental Film (through the music video on www.homestarrunner.com), and I remember thinking it was an ok song, but I didn't know who did it. A few years later, my biology b teacher played the song why does the sun shine? for our class, and I asked her if I could borrow the CD (which was Severe Tire Damage). I made a copy of it, and it stayed in a pile of un-listened to CDs for a few months. In the summer, I picked it up and listened to it, and fell in love with it.

    2-John Linnell
-John Linnell was my favourite member of TMBG, so when I found out he had a solo album (State Songs) I really wanted to buy it. I was planning on making someone buy it for me for my birthday which was coming up, but during a trip to the mall with my friends, I saw it at the record store and couldn't help but buy it. I spent all the money I brought with me on it, which I was planning on buying jewelry from Claire's with. I'm glad I did so.

    3-The Beatles
-This had been my dad's all-time favourite band since he was my age, and he's still pretty obsessed with them now. he's been playing their songs for me since I was an infant. My dad had a tape of them playing All My Loving on the Ed Sullivan show, and when I was in the younger grades (1st-5th, I estimate), I would watch it whenever I felt really sad and it would cheer me up. I went through a middle school phase where I didn't want to like them any more because too many other people liked them too (I tended to shy away from what was popular), and because it was uncool to like the same stuff your parents did. But I soon realized you shouldn't stop liking good music for stupid reasons like that.

    4-The Kinks
-Whenever my dad tries to burn a CD and it turns out funny but still works, he gives it to me. Once he tried to burn The Kinks's album Face to Face, and he accidentally put the last song on twice, so he gave it to me. I put it in my CD player and was instantly taken with it.

    5-The Velvet Underground
-A girl at school who I thought was cool was into them, so I got their first CD and greatest hits collection from the library. It took me a few listens, but then I realized that they were actually pretty amazing. I didn't find out until later that my dad loved them at my age, bought their first album on vinyl the day it came out, and saw them in concert once.

    6-Tally Hall
-I saw them warm up for TMBG at my first TMBG concert in 2006. I thought they were cool, and bought their CD, but I didn't realize how awesome they were until a few months later. I got to shake Joe Hawley's sweaty, guitar-playing hand, though. So that was pretty cool. Also, they're from Ann Arbor, MI, which is very close to my hometown. And the only reason I'm partial to Michigan University is that every band member currently attends school there.

    7-Will Holshouser
-I read an article somewhere that said something about Mr. Holshouser being a good example of the modern young, creative, accordion player. So I looked him up and listened to samples of his songs, and he is very unlike any other thing I listen to. But I really like his music.

    8-The Monkees
-My friend on deviantArt said that they were good, so I considered checking them out. I told my parents, who revealed that they had both been fans when they were around my age, and my dad had the greatest hits collection, so I listened to it. it was ok. Almost a year later, I downloaded some of the episodes of their show off the internet, which re-sparked my interest in the music. Now they're one of my favourite bands, I predict they'll rise up to 4 or 3 (at least) on my lastfm within the nest few weeks. Also, I'm listening to them right now. :D

    9-Islands
-My friend who moved here form Traverse City introduced me to them. Apparently in her city, they're pretty popular (I'm guessing because they're Canadian, and Traverse City is very close to Canada, so it's just natural that bits of Canada should leak down into there). But no one in Holland ever heard of them (that I know of). She gave me the CD Return to the Sea, and I fell in love with it.

    10-Barenaked Ladies
-Being that they're Jade's previous favourite band, she kept getting me to like them by sending me songs. I didn't care much for them at first, but i fell in love with the songs PlayPinch Me and Straw Hat and Dirty Old Hank. Soon I got their fist album, Gordon, and I really like it. When I get more albums and rip the ones I have, my playcount should go up. I predict they'll be up to my 5th eventually.
