Ben Harper is an artist from the Inland Empire in California, an oddly named place for an interesting person. Recording since 1992 (Pleasure & Pain with Tom Freund), Ben Harper released several albums throughout the mid 90’s and early 2000 with his backing band, the Innocent Criminals, comprising Juan Nelson on bass, Leon Mobley on percussion, Oliver Charles on drums, backup/lead guitarists (featuring Marc Ford and Michael Ward), and various keyboard players including Jason Yates. His latest efforts have been solo credited but the Innocent Criminals remain his backing band, led by Nelson’s ever affable presence.

The music really does span multiple genres, covering everything from Jimi Hendrix to Bob Marley to Bruce Springsteen to The Beatles to The Funk Brothers. Harper also recently collaborated on a grammy-winning album with the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Last.fm should map the two different tags together so that no matter what you have it tagged as, it would all be under one name and the playcounts would be combined. As far as what it should be tagged as, they should consult the OCLC name authority files and go with that.

the way I see it ... as long as the Innocent Criminals are playing on the song, they deserve to be a part of the tag. simple. If Ben is playing solo, or is playing all of the instruments himself, then it can be just 'Ben Harper'
