Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band ripped out an insane blend of edgy guitar-driven delta blues with a healthy dosage of not-so-sublime hilarity derived from spoken word performance art.
Drawing from a diverse range of influences, Captain Beefheart (real name Don Van Vliet) created music occasionally dubbed “avant garde blues”: a loud, complex weave of guitar work that would come to influence the punk rock movement in the following decade, unusual percussion, free jazz solos, and surreal lyrics. His 1969 album, Trout Mask Replica, produced by Frank Zappa, is his best known album, regarded by many as the most original work from the 60’s. His 1970 album, Lick My Decals Off, Baby is considered his masterpiece by some of his hardcore fans. Clear Spot is another big hit with the fans.
Van Vliet left the music business in the early ’80s to focus on his artwork. Though the influence of his music is almost immeasurable, his art career has arguably been more commercially successful. His paintings often command prices in excess of $50,001 (US).
In 2004/5 former members of Beefheart’s Magic Band, lead by John ‘Drumbo’ French reformed and toured as The Magic Band giving fans worldwide the chance to hear Beefheart’s music live again. They were received with wide critical acclaim.
Van Vliet currently lives in Humboldt County, California. It is reported by those close to Van Vliet that he is currently suffering life-threatening effects from his Multiple Sclerosis, and is bed-ridden. (read more)
