On the 19th August 2006 Dirty Three guest programmed RAGE. Dirty Three is my favourite band. And RAGE is a late night Aussie TV show which invites bands or artists to pick favourite songs or video clips or the video clips of their favourite songs. At this time it was Dirty Three’s last full Aussie tour for the new album Cinder which was a year old anyway. So writing now means it has been almost five years since a new Dirty Three album. At the moment bands like Portishead and The Drones are my favourite bands but off course both have pulled out new albums this year. Portishead took ten years for Third but it is one of the greatest albums ever. But I hope Dirty Three don’t take that long for a new album.
Warren Ellis has joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and started a new band with Nick Cave called Grinderman. Jim White is playing for Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Beth Orton, Nina Nastasia so he’s a drummer for hire for anyone he wants to play for. Mick Turner has been the quietest but has had solo albums and painting exhibitions. Dirty Three have played together a few times but these shows are getting less and less. Since this tour they have done Chinese tour, curated the ATP festival in England and played festival shows in France, Spain, Australia and the last one being The End of the Road festival in England. So there haven’t broke up but just haven’t done anything new for a long time. Anyone who has not seen the Dirty Three DVD which came out last year should check it out because it’s the closest to a new album and one of the greatest music docos and live show double DVD ever.
Well what happens next is RAGE plays all of the Dirty Three video clips which you don’t really get to see that often. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds videos follow that night too. If anyone knows what the Dirty Three are up to now please let me know. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Scott Walker)
Quick give us your lips
Give us your thighs
Give us your sad and devouring eyes
Cascading tears for every heartbeat
Tonight we'll sleep with The Girls From the Streets
4. How did you get into 49? (The Rolling Stones)
I've been aware of them for as long as I can remember, but the first time I really 'got' them would be listening to Gimme Shelter at about 5am in a Brighton university dorm in 2000.
5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (The Divine Comedy)
Five. I think I was out of the country for the last two.
13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Mr. Oizo)
I found the CD in a Levne Knihy shop for about 30p and listened to it a lot the next six months or so, but unusually there are no specific memories attached to the music.
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Can) Bring Me Coffee or Tea produces a wry, but genuine smile.
16. Is there a song by 25 that makes you sad? (The Jam)
No, however all of Paul Weller's solo work makes me sad for a different reason.
17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (John Barry)
I expect I heard some of his James Bond stuff when I was very young indeed, but the fist time I was aware of him individually would be with the music from Midnight Cowboy
26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Jefferson Airplane)
Hard to say as I imagine I heard them when I was fairly young. Something like White Rabbit most likely.
31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Del Shannon)
Since he died when I was 10 I never got to see him. Shame.
32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Gail Force 3) WLTM still makes me laugh on what must be the 50th play.
33. How did you get into 12? (DJ Shadow)
The local Indie DJ used to play Organ Donor all the time.
34. What is the worst song by 45? (The Incredible String Band)
There are no really bad ISB tracks, 50% are great, 50% are interminable hippy strumming, and therefore merely skippable.
35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Gang of Four)
I heard At Home He's a Tourist in about 1998 as my stepdad had the single.
37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (Echo & the Bunnymen)
I think I remember being underwhelmed by them at the Phoenix Festival one time. I'm not really that much of a fan.
38. What is you favorite song by 36? (The Beatles) The Word is pretty much a perfect song.
40. What is you favorite album by 7? (The Yummy Fur) Kinky Cinema has been one of my favourite albums since it was released, and now you can download the whole thing on Last fm. So do that.
hey... this is volume two of my top 100 albums list, compiled in september of 2008. volume one of the list had a 3 albums per artist maximum... this year i've brought the limit down to two (with the goal of eventually reducing it to one album per artist). the number in parenthesis next to each album name represents its change in position since last year, with (--) meaning no change and (*) being new to the list this year.
if you'd like to check out a pdf version of the list with album artwork, click here (pdf, 3.8mb).
it's 6 months since one of the most irritating trolls has been banned. and it seems now that epic lulz are gone with the new lastfm so let's all have a moment of silence in rememberance of the great persona he was!
I miss you MrWInczakos :(
ps old lastfm sucked.
ps2 new last fm sucks.
ps3 will there be another mighty troll just like him and R.I.P. Octember (also known as Strictly Diesel) and Pagan_Winter (also known as - too many names, cant remember them all)? who knows. maybe someday.
18. What's your favorite lyric by 11? Bright Eyes
"I'm sure the TV sets will tell us when someone reinvents the wheel. Till then we'll have a million conversations about shit that isn't real."
19. Who is a favorite member of 1? モーニング娘。 田中れいな! :) <3
20. Is there a song by 14 that makes you happy? Sex Pistols Bodies. There's something quite positive about yelling "Fuck this and fuck that! Fuck it all and fuck the fucking brat!" along with Johnny Rotten.
21. What is a good memory involving 27? The Peanuts
My fiancee seeing a copy of one of their greatest hits CDs on my kitchen counter and saying, "What is this? Japanese girls aren't enough for you, you have to have Japanese grandmothers, too?"
22. What is your favorite song by 16? Jandek Catch A Smile
31. How many times have you seen 17 live? Brian Eno
None, unfortunately. He doesn't play live.
32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? ℃-ute まっさらブルージーンズ
33. How did you get into 12? Whiteberry
I heard "natsu matsuri" on a NOW-style compilation of Japanese pop hits.
34. What is the worst song by 45? Body Count
Not sure.
35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? The Clash
I heard three songs from the American version of their first album on the local public radio station. One of them was their version of "I Fought the Law". I don't remember what the other two were, one of them might have been "Clash City Rockers".
36. What is the first song you ever heard by 48? Flipper Ha Ha Ha
41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? Dead Kennedys
Not anymore, because it pisses me off that the other three ex-members sued Jello Biafra, used that lawsuit as an excuse to attach their names to songs he wrote by himself, and then ran the Dead Kennedys' legacy into the ground with those fucking reunion tours.
44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? Hawthorne Heights
The first time I heard their second album (via a pre-release leak) and thought to myself, "Why do people think this band is so terrible? They're not!"
Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php
