"A one of a kind album. I've never loved an album so much after hating it for so long. " So true. I hated it the first three or four times, thought it was the worst shit I've ever heard, thought Beefheart was a talentless hack, now I really can't stop listening to it.

A unique work of perfection. Eight months of rehearsal and laid down in four hours! That is dedication to one's art. Highly recommend watching "The Artist Formerly Known as Captain Beefheart" narrated by John Peel and made by BBC to anyone who doesn't 'get' this album.

I personally meant that ((the humor and) <-let's take that a little back...) absurdity is more in spirit than in the compositions themselves. The music is obviously (mad/evil) genious, there's no doubt about that. I didn't mean my comment to be negative or anything like that. I apologize.

The name of the composition is, 'Neon Meate Dream of A Octafish." ... NO! It's "Hairpie!"

good instrumentation. bad vocals. bad songwriting.

how can i not take "moonlight on vermont" seriously? this isn't "humor music" - the fade alone speaks volumes: an educated, calculated reference to steve reich's "it's gonna rain" (all of its content and revolutionary context), and the loaded topic of "old time religion." this shit is more than just full speed and pagan, it's more than fast and bulbous. it's challenging genius.

Absolutely true, but yet it should be noted there actually is a great deal of pleasure in cracking all the complex polyrhythmic sections, it's not just 'funny noodlings'. However, lots of the other 'sounds' are rather humorous like the conclusion of 'Neon Meate Dream'. Vliet's voice and the lyrics are obviously frequently amusing and whimsical; you can hopefully sense the absurdity and fun that must have been had.

This is speculative, but I think that a lot of people, when trying to get to grips with TMR, make the mistake of taking it too seriously. Granted, it's not humor music per se, but at times it's so crazy that you cannot help but laugh. One should be allowed to be amused by it, because it certainly isn't dead serious. In fact, the tongue is in the cheek more than a couple of times. Like with other great albums, patience with TMR is a definite virtue - the rewards will come.
