On One Little Indian, Chumbawamba released three albums, Slap!, Shhh, and Anarchy, in a period in which they were influenced by the techno music and dance culture. The music had turned into a more popular sound, which they emphasized was to spread the message more effectively. The last album released on One Little Indian was Anarchy (1994).
Anarchy or not, the band signed to EMI by 1997. At EMI, Chumbawamba had brief mainstream success, with the singles
By 2000, the album WYSIWYG, was released, being entirely different from previous work: a 22-track soundscape, comprising rock, folk, country and pop music. It includes a cover of the Bee Gees song New York mining disaster.
In 2002, Chumbawamba formed their own label again, now naming it Mutt Records. On this record label, they released Readymades and the world music influenced Un (2004). These two albums brought Chumbawamba to what it is now: a folk group.

"stop defending them!" .. this is chumba's shoutbox, of course people defend them here. and this is just a shoutbox so stop your useless arguing, put on a nice record and sod off. nobody really gives a damn about anyone's opinions

bottom line, chumbawumba are the most effective anarchist band to break into mainstream culture. they made tons of money for things that actually matter, fucked with normal culture a whole bunch, then were promptly forgotten, only to be remembered by the stupid tubthumping song they did. we should all be so lucky

i think he is saying they sold out. stop defending them! plus they were never good! now i don't claim to listen to all underground shit, but damn they never claimed half the shit talked by this band! plus most of it doesn't suck!

Yes because releasing albums full of a capella and acoustic folk is SO trendy. blah blah blah blah blah Let's listen to some frickin music instead of acting like highschool kids criticising other cliques for being omg poseurs.

One last thing, just because an artist or group change their style over 30 years of making music, it doesn't mean they're jumping on the "latest hype", riding with it for a while, and then moving on. I would much rather live in a world where artists sought out new means of expressing themselves than one in which they shamelessly repeated the same 'sound of '82' formula over and over and over again, knowing that the same group of people, safe inside their little world of uniformity, will buy it. That's not neccesarily in support of Chumbawamba or having a dig at a particular band, it's just my thoughts on the subject.

I'll be the first person to give Chumbawamba a bad time about Tubthumper, because its an awful record and, sure, it smacks of hypocrisy to the purist (although I don't think its a simple black and white case of EMI=evil, small labels=fighting the man). I don't take exception to people gaving the band a hard time over that, thats up to the individual to reach their own opinions. What I found petty and annoying was editing their description to call them a 'bunch of cunts' just because you don't like them. It's just childesh! You talk about trustfunds and such, why not concentrate your hatred on the economic system instead of a band that, let's face it, have very little exposure and absolutely no genuine influence on the world. That was the point I was making about punk being self-destructive.

no, its nothing to do with punk or anything, its about sacrificing integrity for trustfunds in the most despicable, stupid way that fuels my hate. maybe i was a bit harsh, but in my opinion, these guys just jumps on the latest hype, rides with it for a while, then moves on, alas they deserve shit

Whatever makes you feel like a big man, CoalitionBlues. After all, it's not like petty back biting, in-fighting or cartoonish morons killed punk or anything, is it?
