Colin Meloy is the mind behind The Decemberists. He has released three EPs consisting entirely of the works of Morrissey, Shirley Collins, and Sam Cooke (in 2005, 2006, and 2008 respectively) and a solo album, Colin Meloy Sings Live! (2008). The latter features live tracks selected from his previous solo tour.
Meloy began his song writing days after learning to play the guitar in the seventh grade. He began recording in the eighth grade as a member of the musical collaboration, The B-Sides, recording, (to cassette tape), “The Mellow Bluesmen Die: A Spiritual Progression.”
He followed that with the band Figurehead, recording “Jesus’ Mom.”
In his high school days Meloy was also part of Helena, Montana’s Happy Cactus, releasing one album, “Cricket.”

Best album of 2008 imo. If Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Nick Drake, John Lennon, Ian Curtis, Kurt Cobain and Eva Cassidy somehow reached across the ether and collaborated with Bowie, Jagger, Morrissey, Neil Young, Bryan Ferry, Joan Baez and David Byrne to produce an album covering the works of Leonard Cohen, well, I don't think it could be better. Ooook, slight exaggeratiion. What a great rapport with the audience and the melacholic songs interspersed with moments of real humour just sets it apart.

Does anyone else think of Dwight Schrute whenever they see Colin Meloy? I don't know, they look alike in my opinion.

I've liked Colin Meloy's voice for ages. Just when I hear 'I've Changed My Plea', it sounds so pained and more gorgeous. Dunno if it beats Morrissey's version yet though. Jury is still out.

There are some people who really should make their DNA available for public use. Adorable, brilliant, and musical? Spread those genes more, Mr. Meloy.
