Well Little Brother, Talib Kweli and David Banner came through Eugene all backed by the Rhythm Roots Allstars. Kweli and LB is a great pairing but Banner.... well, that's an interesting choice.

Despite the high profile names, the concert was a little sparse. There wasn't a home game for UO last night so I expected a full house. Gauging by the appearance of most of the people around me, flat brim hats, dog tags/chains and jerseys I'd guess that the majority of fans were there to see Banner. The crowd was polite but lacked the intensity of some previous concerts I've gone recently, namely Atmosphere to which the entire crowd was wall-to-wall and Common which was a rock concert.

Little Brother opened which seems like a travesty. Its LB, Phonte and Big Pooh, nearly as big as underground rappers get. Pre concert I told Zack I'd bring my copy of The Listening as at the Common concert I held up my iPod with Can I Borrow a Dollar? cover art to which Common responded in kind after bending down to glance at by stage diving.

So at the beginning of their set I held up "The Listening" and Phonte glanced down and grinned, "That's my motherfuckin' Man right there", pointing at me. Then about three songs later they broke into The way you do it. I held up my album again, and Phonte, responded, "My man knows what the fuck this is about... here give me the album!" so I leaned and handed it to him. As they performed they held up and then signed the CD while rapping. Respect.

Anyhow, Little Brother did Eugene proper, I just wished I could see them where they were the main draw, like N.C. as I'm sure they'd been able to work the crowd like no other.

I didn't pay attention much to Banner, but he was intense, he didn't really perform his songs but he did jump around, crowd surf, run in the crowd, stand off the side of the 2nd story balcony. I don't respect his music but I can say the man was entertaining to watch.

Talib headlined and perhaps that wasn't a wise choice as a chunk of the crowd left. Talib as performer was stoic and just was in professional mode. I'd liked to see him take a few more moments to talk the crowd, other than asking the crowd, "Where the fuck you at?". Poor Talib just didn't understand Oregon. He thought people were throwing up the Rock diamonds but they're "O"s for OREGON. Pharrell got it. So did Common. The crowd was somewhat into Talib but it just wasn't his crowd. Perhaps if he had been touring The Roots when they passed through it'd been the one-two combo to bring in fans of the conscience movement. I like Talib but his live performance despite stealing the show on Dave Chappelle's block party just didn't really make me dig him more. He brought onstage Strong Arm Steady his west coast group. I'd heard them before but they're just not as cool as Talib.

That said, as a concert it was good but not great. Seeing LB was the highlight.

1. How did you get into 29?
Emperor. I got into them before I got into them, if that makes sense. Years ago when I wanted to get into metal, I came across some mentions of their music and downloaded it, winding up with a headache in the process. Last year, having decided to get into metal properly, I re-downloaded "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" and decided briefly that it was good. Not a fan of the band these days, though.

2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Sanna Nielsen. Probably "Vagar du Vagar jag" (which I know I'm spelling wrongly)

3. What's your favorite lyric by 33?
Technically this is Woods of Infinity, and I actually don't have a favourite lyric of theirs

4. How did you get into 49?
Technically Zebda. I wish I could remember. I know it was through hearing "Tomber la chemise", but how I heard it is anyone's guess. Just a song that's an integral part of my life now

Massive Attack. I own all their studio albums

The Puppini Sisters. Their cover of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy". Arguably better than the original

Thy Majestie. Nope. All their songs sound like they're on a huge caffeine high

Catamenia. "Location: COLD", I'd say. That chorus is fun fun fun

Annett Louisan. A tough question, since they're all good. Either "Das Alles Wär Nie Passiert" or "Eve", both of which are impossible to explain without the lyrics

Die verbannten Kinder Evas. Can't think of any song in particular. Depending on my mood, they can all be pretty bad, since they sound the same...

The Lord Weird Slough Feg. "Space Port Blues", without a doubt. That riff will bring a smile to my face every time

Ulver. Anything on the "Perdition City" album. It's just the right blend of experimentation and accessibility

Forefather. A lot of them can make me sad, because they're singing about those old traditions that people don't remember anymore. "The Folk That Time Forgot" would be a classic example. But then, they're just so damn good that it doesn't count

I think i saw him perform live at some small beach fest. If that wasn't the first time i heard his music, i had probably heard some songs through a friend since a lot of them like finnish reggae.

Hee, funny how Sage has come down from #1 to #22. I heard Slow Down Gandhi as a pre-release single or something before the album (A Healthy Distrust) came out.

Well after seeing Atmosphere live it might seem live hip hop would have eclipsed for me as Slug seemed genuinely happy to be in Eugene, and sung it praise to which the audience responded in kind.

So tonight I saw Common with N*E*R*D. Early on NERD just seemed unexcited until they let an army of fans on stage to jump up and down as they performed "Rock Star". Suddenly what seemed like just an okay venue became a full out party, as people jumped and screamed. Rockstars they were. Pharrell of course took a moment to say, "Aren't you glad we're going to have a new fuckin' President?" The inspired crowd started chanting Obama very clearly and loudly. Pharell smiled and commented on how beautiful it was without even asking for it. Really Pharell, this is the state that drew the biggest Obama crowd for a single speech save Germany.

During the set change between NERD and Common, my roommate Zack and I were able to sneak up close, roughly 2-3 people short of the stage. Common was the reason each of us paid $30, and spent $20 on merchandise a piece. I'd heard from a friend who saw Common in concert he wasn't that interesting live so i was curious. Common stuck to a highly scripted performance, complete with skits. Yes, skits. He had a mock bar on stage to which his backup vocalist pretended to be a bar tender on stage, and invited a female fan to be the girl whom in the bar he was running game at. It seemed a little forced but after introducing the fan, felt a little more natural as his skits became less scripted. However the reality of it all is Common at this point in his career has to say, "I'm Common, suck me beautiful", the game is just for show. That said, Common rocked it well.

Several songs deep into his set Common was rocking out left hand sude of the stage near where Zack and I were. I had cued up my iPod to "Can I Borrow a Dollar?" (back when Common was Common Sense from 1992) and had the artwork on the screen. So when he approached, I extended my arm among the tumult of hands.

Long shot he'd see it right? Wrong. Sure enough he saw I was leaning in holding up my iPod, he clearly leaned over to look at the iPod. What on earth could this kid be holding facing him? He squinted while continuing his verse, and bent over. Suddenly Common sprang up.

"Was he able to see what I was showing him?" I wondered, and I reached into pocket my iPod. Doubtfully Common expected to see his first album being flashed, especially in a sea of young college and highschool kids with a few of us adults sprinkled in. Common darted a few steps back from the stage then suddenly ran back out and dove into the same spot, where I was standing.

I grinned, and reached over get Zack's attention and held up my iPod. After the show Zack excitedly told me he touched Common and I professed I was the cause. Was I? Hell I know for certain, but he clearly was looking at my iPod, when I held it firmly facing him while the crowd bounced. If he was able to see his cover art from an Album that even most fans wouldn't know, that'd be reason enough.

So inspiring a legend to stage dive? Its a nonpareil event at a concert. I'll probably brag about this for years to come.
