What a night! When the entire room knows the lyrics for the band's non-singles from previous albums, you know it's a good crowd. The fact there were cheers for 'Expo '86' as loud as those for 'Crooked Teeth' was surprising -- at least for me. Didn't realise there were so many Death Cab fans in Perth ;)
The band played for around 90 minutes, taking songs from most of their career. The set list was a nice mix of old hits and their poppier tunes, along with most of the songs from their latest album. The pace was uptempo for most of the time, but Ben Gibbard went solo for a few of the acoustic tracks to great effect.
On the technical side of things, lighting was great, well synchronised with the music, and not intrusive at all. The audio mixing was decent, but overly loud drums edged the other instruments out on a few tracks. Guitars were also pretty muddy and Wall Of Sound-ish, but I think that was intentional.
After concluding their set and taking their sweet time to return for an encore, a last few fan favourites finished off the night in singalone style. Great fun was had all around.
