They changed their name following the release of their debut, Dinosaur (1985), when another band called The Dinosaurs, featuring ex-members of Country Joe and the Fish and Jefferson Airplane, threatened them with legal action. (They still used the name Dinosaur on their albums at least as late as 1987. Some copies of You’re Living All Over Me still lack the “Jr”).
In 1987, they signed to SST Records on the recommendation of Sonic Youth, and with them released what is often considered their best album, You’re Living All Over Me (1987). Bug followed the next year (1988). In the UK Bug was released by Paul Smith’s Blast First Records, home to Sonic Youth, Big Black and the Butthole Surfers. During this period they became known for their very loud concerts.
They never had much commercial success, but gained something of a cult following. The success of the Freak Scene and Just Like Heaven singles, alongside namedrops from Sonic Youth (again) and Nirvana saw them signed by Warner Brothers. Their songs have always been melodic, simply structured and covered in guitar noise. They were a major influence on the up-and-coming band Nirvana, and were on par with contemporaries the Pixies.

I'm just glad it wasn't Little Fury Things. Then again, the song would probably make the little kids shit their pants.

+rep. And there are much better songs than "Feel The Pain" to play on GH/Rock Band. I would love to see "The Wagon" there

As soon as GH/Rock Band hits the stores, I'm going to get sick of "Feel The Pain", plus it's going to be their new trademark song.

Where do you think the term "alternative" came from? They're both in the same boat. Made up genres by the media and music industry for people to identify with.

I'd say grunge does exist. The early proto-grunge bands were real grunge. But alternative totally doesn't exist. It's not even a real genre... Fucking corporate radio stations.

Oh jesus christ. Let's just bring in the industrial guys for the truth shall we?

LetsBeSerious wrote:
No such thing as "grunge" or "alternative" for that matter.

UnivoxSuperfuzz wrote:
Sure. Nirvana isn't grunge because the essence of grunge is the combination of punk rock, metal, and glam. Personally, I see Nirvana as a punk rock band and the only reason people thought they were grunge was because they were on Sub Pop, Kurt wore flannel shirts and ripped jeans, it's just the kind of music that was popular at the time, and they never denied it.
