Osaka, Japan (1997 – present)
Dir en grey, in its earliest form, began in Osaka as the band of vocalist 京 and drummer Shinya - 廃人黒薔薇族 (haijin kuro bara zoku “Invalid Black Rose Family”). Members and associates of this band formed La:Sadie’s, which eventually included four of Dir en grey’s five current members. La:Sadie’s disbanded in 1996. All but the bassist, Kisaki, and former lead guitarist, Shio (replaced by Kaoru), came back together to form Dir en grey. They recruited Toshiya, a bassist from Nagano and previously in the band D†L, and officially formed “Dir en grey” in February 1997.
In 1998, the band gained major attention by becoming the first indies band to have a single place in the top ten on Japan’s Oricon music charts. They played a sold-out performance at Osakajo Hall on December 18, 1999. This remains one of the band’s most memorable solo performances to date.
The band encountered setbacks in 2000 when the promotional tour for their upcoming album MACABRE was canceled. 京 was hospitalized from a tympanic membrane perforation in his left ear, which remains partially deaf to this day. His lyrics in their 2001 single ‘ain’t afraid to die’ respond to this brush with his own mortal vulnerability.

Spark_and_Spark-I would think that Deg would care about those fans since they tend to be ridiculously obsessive and pay large amounts for merch and shit

i don't think that anyone with that many visual kei bands in their top 8 has any business calling anybody a faggot

"commercial poop" ? I wouldn't be saying that if I were you. Nice taste, faggot.

My personal favourite is absolutely the Marrow of a Bone. I like 'new' Diru (Vulgar, WtD. and MoaB) the most. And I'm really looking forward to UROBOROS. I hope they keep playing with their new, heavyer style.

I think it started going downhill with Vulgar, and reached the bottom of the pit with the over-produced Withering To Death, and is slowly climbing back up with The Marrow and the next album...

Dir en grey is commercial poop nowadays, especially after The Marrow of a Bone, which really wasn't too good. Well, thank god I have Gauze to listen.

I go nuts when people tag Diru j-rock or visual-kei! -.- J-rock is not a genre. And who calls, for example, the Marrow of a Bone a rockalbum? Those stupid "KAWAII AN CAFE NYAPPY FOREVER" fangirls tag EVERY FUCKING japanese band jrock because they don't know any genres. I would say the Marrow of a bone could be described as metalcore, alternative metal and melodic deathmetal. I'd call old Diru alternative rock, but it's also kind of progressive. And yes, Diru USED TO dress like ' visual-kei ' but not anymore, and I think they would appreciate people NOT to call them visual-kei.

KMFCM is hilarious. His comparison to Smashing Pumpkins was completely accurate, and not nonsensical at all. He's totally wrong though, since a more accurate comparison can be drawn between Dir en grey and Mariah Carey. Same vocals, same arrangements, hell, even THE FINAL sounds like Mariah Carey's Heartbreaker.
