From a Basement on the Hill by Elliott Smith

Not by any means Smith's best work. When I start getting the feeling of disappointment while listening to From a Basement on the Hill, I have to remind myself that it was in essence pieced together after his death. There are plenty of decent songs and a couple of really good ones (Kings Crossing, Shooting Star and Twilight) but it definitely feels incomplete to me.
  • Love What You Do and Fuck the Rest.

    10 Oct 2008, 04:25 by gillianMFC

I turned 17 about a week ago. This led to some major thinking on my part. It's hard to know exactly who you are when you're only 17. But I have a feeling I'm on the right track. All I know is, I'm me and I wouldn't want to be anyone else. The world I've created for myself (while not perfect) is certainly a comfortable one, although there have been struggles. Who doesn't struggle with things in their teenage years?
Sometimes I feel like there's an advertisement on my forehead that says "Feel Free to Judge." Then again, my forehead wouldn't be a good place because of my long black bangs that have become my trademark (I've had basically the same haircut since I was born; the only thing that changes is the length). Everyone sees me, talks to me, listens to me, and makes their own judgment. I'm not condemning judging people; I do it too. For some reason though, people seem to think they know me before they actually do. And that's not fair.
So, coming upon this birthday has led me to reflect on the things that matter the most to me, the things that define me, and the things I wish I could change. It's not easy to narrow yourself down, but it's necessary in times like these when everyone's expected to know what they want to do with their life the second they accept their high school diploma. I don't know what I want to do. I know what I like and I know what I don't like. And I want to tell you what those things are. I like lists. That should be obvious by the end of this journal.

10 THINGS THAT MATTER TO ME (in no particular order):
    1. Identity Crisis? - I was adopted at birth. I have no clue who my birth parents are. I actually don't know anything about my birth father. I know a few things about my birth mother, like her medical history and the fact that she already had a son (two years old at the time of my birth) and she kept him. My whole life I've struggled with the idea that I was somehow abandoned. And yes, I love my parents. They've raised me and nurtured me and provided for me in a way that no one else ever could have. But the question still remains: who am I, really?
    2. Music - This one should be fairly obvious. I'm obsessive, but I'm okay with that. And yeah, I judge people by the music they listen to. But so what? I'm judged the same way. "Oh you like punk? You're a freak." Yeah, I do. And yeah, I am. So what are you gonna do about it?
    3. Texas - Stereotype all you want and I can guarantee you that only two people fit your idea of a "typical Texan": George W. Bush and Davy Crockett. Yeehaw, motherfuckers. This state is fucked up in a lot of ways, but I can deal with that. There are enough cool people here to outweigh the lameness. And besides, I live in the 4th largest city in the US. I don't own a horse or a farm. Learn a little about culture, folks.
    4. Literature - I read so much it's kind of scary. During this past summer, I think I read a total of 15 books (novels and nonfiction) in a span of two months. What I read shapes how I think in a way. I don't necessarily read for entertainment, although that can be a factor. I read to learn about the human psyche and how others react in situations I've never had to deal with (fortunately). I also read a lot of books on music, but that's another story.
    5. Relationships - Both romantic relationships and friendly relationships are extremely important to me. I treat my friends with as much respect as I can, but I find it difficult to keep that respect mutual. Kids fight. I get it. It annoys me though. And as far as boyfriends go, I've had my fair share. And I love boys to death. I like them much more than girls, and I don't mean that in just a sexual sense. Boys don't judge as much. I'd rather be one of the boys than one of the girls any day.
    6. Medication - I'm on so much that it pretty much controls me. A pill for my mood, a pill for my attention span, a pill to sleep, a pill to control birth (?)... and they all have side effects that I don't like. Drowsiness, dry-mouth, irritability, loss of appetite... At least I'm "happy," "able to pay attention," and "well-rested." ... Yeah right.
    7. Movies - If there were no movies, what else would I quote to seem cool? Naw, just kidding. But I love movies. I love the way a movie can move you to the core, or just cheer you up after a shitty day. I've seen so many movies and can't wait to see more.
    8. Weed - Oh shut up.
    9. Drama - As in theater. I've been an outgoing and spotlight-loving person my whole life. It makes sense that I'm in theater. I'm in my school's Acting Company for the second year in a row. I love the way I get to be someone else. I love having all eyes on me. I love rehearsing and making new friends in the Company. I love it love it love it. I won the Middle School Drama Award in 8th grade and I know it sounds like I'm bragging but that made a huge difference for me. I learned that there was something I was good at that other people recognized. And that made me feel so appreciated.
    10. Myself - I'm not totally self-centered. I'm honest. I'd rather have myself feeling okay and knowing what's up than feeling like shit. Because the person who most affects how you feel is you, and the sooner you realize it the sooner you can shape up. It's working/worked for me.

That being said, this has NOTHING to do with music. So I'll talk about 10 artists that matter to me now so that this thing has some relation to being on last.fm.
    (Also in no particular order)

    1. Ramones - Basically my gateway drug into the wonderful world of punk rock. They're totally original and way ahead of their time. The cool/lucky thing for the Ramones was that they were in the right place at the right time and in a situation where they could highly influence others. And they did. They influenced generations of imitators (good and bad), but they really influenced me. Of all the artists I like except for the Beatles, the Ramones have been with me the longest. And I fucking love them.
    2. Elliott Smith - I had a terrible freshman year and pretty much ONLY listened to Elliott Smith. Dude's a genius. Not to mention he has a beautiful voice. Sometimes when you feel like shit, you need to listen to someone who has it way worse than you to make you feel better. It's fortunate when that person makes beautiful music.
    3. Joy Division - A lot of things I could say about JD are similar to what I said about Elliott Smith. However, Joy Division is also kind of dancey and fun to play on guitar. Ian Curtis RIP. Joy Division is another artist I've liked for a long time.
    4. Sonic Youth - This is the first band that I can honestly say blew my mind when I first listened to them. Sure, it sounds like noise to an outsider, but to me, it's fucking brilliant. Not to mention I want to marry Thurston Moore. But Sonic Youth puts me in a trance. Listening to their music is an activity in and of itself. It's not something I do while doing my homework.
    5. Black Flag - Angry white kid music. That's really all I can say. I like loud shit and they're loud. It's not so much a spiritual connection I feel to Black Flag, more like one of loyalty.
    6. Neutral Milk Hotel - Here's a band I have a spiritual connection with. It's eerie. I feel more and more touched every time I listen to a Neutral Milk Hotel record. It gives me goosebumps.
    7. Beck - I finally got to see him live at Austin City Limits music festival. He's incredibly prolific and incredibly talented. He never fails to meet and exceed expectations. Show me a bad Beck record and I'll show you the door.
    8. The Clash - They showed punks that it was cool to go outside of the box for influences. And that made everything so much more interesting not only for the scene, but for listeners for years to come.
    9. The Velvet Underground - Holy buttfuck what a band. They pretty much inspired a revolution (that would be punk) by just existing. Fuck Andy Warhol, Lou Reed's where it's at.
    10. Weezer - This is the one band that can always make me feel better, no matter what mood I'm in. As long as you play me either Pinkerton or The Blue Album, I'm good.

  • New Slaapwel Records Release: Steinbruchel

    8 Oct 2008, 18:00 by wixel

    New Release: "Home" by Steinbrüchel

Hooray! There's finally a new record! Awesome!! I mean: "Calm down, no need to get all excited. It's time to sleep".

I got in touch with Ralph Steinbrüchel when he asked me about the first slaapwel release, probably little over a year ago. As things usually go, one e-mail led to another and eventually steinbrüchel seemed the perfect artist to compose a piece that would be excellent at inviting sleep. He accepted my invitation and confirmed my assumption by sending me the excellent "Home" a few months after the invitation. Home by SteinbrüchelAs with all releases I have to "test" it before I can release it as a proper slaapwel record. For this one I remember receiving the disc, deciding not to wait until it was bedtime, but rather play it on my home stereo, while lying in that big comfy sofa in my apartment. The sun was just right at that spot where its warmth spreads all over the sofa and was shining through my eyelids. That natural warmth - electrical heating cannot be compared to the generous warmth of the sun, no doubt - combined with the hissy guitarswirls of steinbrüchel turned out to be a perfect match. It sounds like a guitar that wanders through the forest without any goal or destination. Just floating, aimlessly. It's melodic yet there's no actual melody to be found. As far as comparisons go I would say Fennesz during his Venice days, or maybe like Mountains or other 12k artists. Also; "Pup" by Fenton might be a good comparision. But of course, the best thing you should do is simply put this record on, maybe on a winter day when the sun is able to break through the clouds. And just drift off..

"Home" was composed by steinbrüchel, winter 2008. The composition was based on guitar recordings by Daisuke Miyatani. If you're interested in obtaining one of the 150 available copies, please e-mail me or head over to http://www.wixel.be/slaapwel where you'll find a paypal button and other necessary information. The cd is 10 euro postpaid.

Here we go.. it has been long in the works, but now I can finally announce it fo' real! There will be a new Wixel record in november. Full length - no covers or sleepy music or any other strange experiments. Just the official follow-up to "Heart". I'm quite excited about it as I've spent ages perfecting it. I'll hold out on announcing the artwork, details and official mp3 samples etc.. until I have everything back from the pressing plant. ....But let me just invite you to the official release party which will take place at one of my favourite venues in Belgium: Stuk. Stuk is a lovely contemporary art / music / dance centre in Leuven with a great soundsystem.

The show will take place on wednesday the 26th of november. I'd be more than very extreme very maxium very so much very happy if you could make it to that show.. even if you only want to see wixel once in your lifetime: let it be this one. The Bear that wasn't (lovely Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens - music) and Yuko will be playing too. It promises to be a wonderful night. I don't know yet what it will be, but you can expect something really special for that night.

Yuko, for times when ears are sore.

You may or may not have noticed that there's a new promising band on the horizon. Yuko makes awesome indiepop in the style of Grizzly Bear or Efterklang. They have a beautiful sound of their own which makes them possibly the best belgian band of the moment. Really! I was very lucky they invited me to produce and mix their debut album which got released this week. There's nothing more fun than mixing a record which has nothing but awesome and inspiring songs. Head over to their myspace for some sounds if this all tickles your ickle. Feel free to ask me some information if you're inclined to buy their record, it's 10 euros + shipping.

    THE BASICS:
o The CMU Social is the monthly networking and showcase night for readers of the CMU Daily, the UK music business’ biggest and most popular daily news service.
o On Tuesday 14 Oct the sixth episode of the CMU Social will feature performances from two of CMU’s favourite new artists of the moment, Post War Years, who ended a successful tour with White Lies with a sold out show at the ICA, and Gillan Edgar, a great new artist from Manchester who recently supported Pete Doherty.
o As well as the music, the CMU Social is a real opportunity for music business people to meet, network and generally socialise – or prove their pop trivia knowledge with the CMU Pop Quiz (past winners include Sunday Best, Something In Construction and Olswangs/Glastonbury).
o On top of that, there’s a happy hour and well-priced food available from 7pm to 8pm
o Entry is free to CMU Daily readers, who just need to email the names of themselves and their guests to social@cmumusicnetwork.co.uk. Tickets will also be available on the door for £5.

    CMU ON THE SOCIAL:
For nearly ten years CMU has been reporting on and writing about and bigging up all kinds of great new music. Among the artists to get some of their earliest coverage in CMU over the years include Stereophonics, Eminem, Snow Patrol, The Dandy Warhols, Delays, The Streets, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, McFly, Kasabian, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys to mention just a few. To mark its tenth year, CMU launched its own monthly night meaning we can now not only talk about but also showcase the new bands we’re most exciting about – and just three months in we’ve had some storming sets from bands and artists like Infadels, A.Human, Maths Class, Vessels, The Deer Tracks, Sportsday Megaphone, RestLessList, Big Strides and The Penny Black Remedy. And this month, we’ll add two more brilliant bands to that list.

    CMU ON POST WAR YEARS:
Post War Years have been causing quite a stir this year, thanks to shows with the likes of MGMT, Tom Vek and Does It Offend You, Yeah? They have also just completed a UK tour with White Lies, which ended with a sold out show at the ICA. Their single, PlayThe Black Morning, received airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6music and Xfm earlier this year, as well as picking up glowing reviews from the likes of The Times, Fader and Artrocker. Their live performances are whirlwind of racing synths, samplers, and vocal harmonies and band members switching instruments and their sound sits somewhere between Joy Division and Talking Heads. We can’t wait.

    CMU ON GILLAN EDGAR:
Hailing from Manchester, Gillan is getting noticed in all the right places at the moment, including the CMU office, where it was quickly decided that he’s exactly the kind of guy we want playing for us. His music recalls The Beatles, Ryan Adams and Elliott Smith with great lyrics and hooks so large they probably shouldn’t be allowed. He recently supported Pete Doherty in London, where he went down a storm, and we expect the same when he plays for us.

  • Top 10 questions

    5 Oct 2008, 21:30 by Brottarhunden

Thought I'd kick off this journal with a Q&A with my top 10 overall artist list. Saw someone else doing this somewhere and thought it would be cool. Here we go:

    1. Tegan and Sara
    2. The Beatles
    3. Alanis Morissette
    4. Maria Mena
    5. Juliana Hatfield
    6. Paul McCartney
    7. Feist
    8. Bruce Springsteen
    9. Elliott Smith
    10. Cat Power

Before we begin... The order above is based on played songs, and that does not always translate to favorite artists. Maria Mena and Bruce Springsteen are a bit misplaced in the Top 10. But all the more reason to write more in this journal later.

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Hm, first song I heard by Paul McCartney. Probably would be a Beatles song, but that doesn't really count... My dad had the Ram album and the first song is PlayToo Many People (great song). So I'll go with that.

What is your favourite album of 2?
Another The Beatles question! This is like asking which one of your children is your favourite. But I love Rubber Soul, Revolver and Abbey Road. I'll go with Revolver! A solid pop album with few weak songs.

What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
The first lyrics I reacted to by Juliana Hatfield was PlayUgly from Hey Babe in 92. It's the essence of insecurity, a bit simplistic maybe, but it goes perfectly with the music and the soft voice.

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Once. Well it wasn't live... My girlfriend was working on swedish TV show and Maria Mena was a guest. She was supposed to sing live, but I think she had some trouble with her voice, a flu or something. She perfomed singback instead though. And this was before I was a fan, and the reason I became one. I want to add though, that I like Maria Mena, but her being in the top 10 is due to me leaving my computer on for a long weekend playing her albums.

What is your favorite song by 7?
Mushaboom or Honey Honey. Pick one? Honey Honey. No, changed my mind! PlayThe Park.

What is a good memory you have considering the music of 10?
Don't have a real memory from Cat Power, I have a strong image in my head though of listening to Names on a bus home after work a couple of years ago. Ridiculously sad song.

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
    Are You Still Mad.

What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
The Beatles are not really known for their deep and meaningful lyrics, even though a lot of analysis has been done by journalists and fans through the years. I think all of them would agree that the lyrics was just a means to an end, it was always about the music. Lennon didn't really write those hard-hitting songs until after the Beatles, and McCartney started just a few years ago with real honest lyrics. But this is not about good lyrics, it's about favorites. Abbey Road and the White Album did have funny and smart lyrics, but I'll pick Run for Your Life, written by Lennon, because it's weird and violent and from one of the early albums.

What is your favorite song by 9?
    PlayEverything Reminds Me of Her.

How did you get in to 3?
Fell in love with Former Infatuation Junkie in '98. I didn't like Jagged Little Pill when it came out, perhaps due to the hype, but Junkie was a lot different and still one of the best albums from that time.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
Monday, Monday, Monday. Remember seeing the video on TV and liking it, but didn't look them up until Walking with a ghost became a hit.

What is your favorite song by 4?
    PlayJust Hold Me I guess.

How many time have you seen 9 live?
Never, and not very likely to happen either...

What is a good memory you have concerning 2?
My whole childhood and growing up with my best friend Anders Tengdahl. I think we listened to The Beatles everyday from when we were 10 years old, until we started a band at around 15 or 16. Good times!

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
41 one shots is a sad song, wouldn't say it makes me sad though.

What is your favorite album of 5?
Only Everything, if I have to pick one.

What is your favorite song of 1?
Dark Come Soon. A heart breaking song about denial, and lying to yourself, your friends and family. "So what? I lied. I lie to me too."

What is your favourite song of 10?
    Good Woman

How many times have you seen 8 live?
Never! But it feels like Bruce Springsteen is here two or three times a year, so if I can get my hands on ticket, sure.

What is your favourite album of number 1?
The Con. This might actually be my all time favorite album (ok, ask me again in five years). It grew on me, on the first listen i was a bit dissapointed, it felt too complicated. But that was actually a good thing, and I've not heard anything like it. Can't wait for their next album and see how different that will be.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
PlayBorn in the USA most probably.
