Way too many to name but I love:

"So in this almost empty gin palace
    Through a two-way looking glass
    You see your alice
You know she has no sense
    For all your jealousy
In a sense she still smiles very sweetly
    Charged with insults and flattery
    Her body moves with malice
Do you have to be so cruel to be callous"

    From PlayBeyond Belief

What is your favorite song by 9?
    PlayEverything Hits at Once

What is your favorite song by 4?

What is a good memory you have involving 2?

What is your favorite album of 5?
    Exile on Main St.

  • Take the eclectic music taste test

    10 Sep 2008, 11:36 by ted_blurn

Undoubtedly you've seen this particular quiz before. I'm a fan because the database is doing all the work. Anyway...

    =====================

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

    My eclectic score is currently

    94/100

The 94 related artists for my profile are Alice in Chains (2), Avengers In Sci-Fi, Balkan Beat Box, Bauhaus, Bob Mould, Bugy Craxone, Buzzcocks, Cabaret Voltaire, Camouflage, Ciccone Youth, Coldplay, Colin Newman, Collide, Cranes, Damon Albarn, Dave Gahan, DeVotchKa, Desert Sessions, Dinosaur Jr. (2), Eagles of Death Metal, Echo & the Bunnymen, Eddie Vedder, Electronic, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra, Erasure, Foo Fighters, Frank Black, Frank Black and the Catholics, Gang of Four, Graham Coxon, Green River, Grinderman, Halo33, Hartfield, Hole, Incubus, J.U.F., Jane's Addiction, Joe Jackson, Joe Strummer, Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros, Jonny Greenwood, Joy Division, KMFDM, Kultur Shock, Kyuss, Lenny Kravitz, Luminous Orange, Lush, Marilyn Manson, Martin L. =====================

A lot of bands I've never heard of, but out of that lot only one band that pops up twice (the Minutemen). Been meaning to get a copy of Double Nickels on the Dime.

There's also a super-eclectic test at the same link:

    =====================

Take your top 50 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 20 similar artists (where the artist itself is the #1 most similar). The resulting number of unique artists is your super-eclectic score. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/supereclectic.php

    My super-eclectic score is currently

    726/1000

The most similar artists for my profile are The Psychedelic Furs (6), The Smiths (6), Wire (6), New Order (6), Blur (6), Pulp (6), The Jesus and Mary Chain (6), The Cure (6), Public Image Ltd. (5), Suede (5)

    I think that's a pass!

  • 25 Bad Things About My Top 25 (As of 8/13/08)

    14 Aug 2008, 03:07 by Pinkfloydbeck

Everyone does this, so I thought, why not? Let's have fun with this.
    1. Beck - Hasn't made any really great albums in 2000's.
    2. The Clash - They fought, and they made too few albums. And Give 'Em Enough Rope was a terrible album.
    3. David Bowie - Not many geniuses have made that much bad music.
    4. The Beatles - Before Rubber Soul , they were the Jonas Brothers of the '60's.
    5. Pink Floyd - They do have a bit of an ego. And without Roger Waters they are completely talentless.
    6. Bob Dylan - Self-Portrait. Saved! Shot of Love. Sometimes it seems he likes to alienate himself.
    7. R.E.M. - They completely lost touch after New Adventures in Hi Fi and didn't get it back until Accelerate. And Monster is terrible as well.
    8. Talking Heads - Tom Tom Club. Thanks.
    9. Beastie Boys - Most of the instrumentals get old after a while. And there are way too many of them.
    10. Nirvana - They inspired so much terrible music. And the screaming gets too be too much after a couple months.
    11. Gorillaz - They release albums after 4+ years hiatuses and expect everyone to still be around with nothing in between.
    12. Gnarls Barkley - Everyone's obsessed with "Crazy," but I ain't too crazy about that song. In fact I don't really like it at all.
    13. Flight of the Conchords - They are a bit less funny without the show.
    14. The White Stripes - Sometimes you wish Jack White would expand a little bit and not rename The White Stripes "The Raconteurs" just to do so.
    15. The Kinks - They're still going. But their talent left early in the '70's.
    16. Elvis Costello & The Attractions - See David Bowie.
    17. The Flaming Lips - Sometimes you wonder if Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is supposed to put you to sleep. It's good just a little bit slow.
    18. LCD Soundsystem - All of their songs seem a bit too long.
    19. The Velvet Underground - "I'm Sticking with You" makes them seem like a bunch of whoosies (did I spell that right?). How ironic.
    20. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - His songwriting skills weren't always up to par; see "Moon Turn the Tides...Gently, Gently..."
    21. The Rolling Stones - They sued the Verve. Sure, their music is cool, but they've turned into such old d**** b**s!
    22. Johnny Cash - All the songs have the same beat. Boom shick a boom shick a. And don't you dare ask for a different one.
    23. Wilco - They seem a bit too comfortable being The Kinks, even though they aren't as talented. And the songs are better than the whole albums.
    24. The Who - I just don't like Who's Next. Sorry.
    25. Red Hot Chili Peppers - All of their albums (with the exception of Stadium Arcadium) are a good 5 songs too long. Cut out 5 and they would be great.

  • Random Tracks - "Goon Squad" by Elvis Costello and the Attractions

    14 Aug 2008, 00:38 by rfduck

The lyrics here have a sort of "rock stardom as military service" theme, and the music creates an appropriate sense of dread. Some of that is created by the growling bass of Bruce Thomas. I'm not that knowledgeable about the technical side of music, but I suspect the key is minor. Something about the guitar adds to that sense of dread.

I really like the part in the middle where the guitar drops out and the bass is the only thing left. Bruce is an excellent bassist.

Armed Forces has a lot of pop music, but this is a blast of intense fury. It's spectacular. It's a great rock and roll track.

  • Tuesday Ten: Biting The Hand That Feeds

    29 Jul 2008, 18:25 by amodelofcontrol

This week, it's time to turn inward a little - and look at songs written about the music industry. Needless to say, this kind of song is almost always written in a negative light (I can't think of any positive examples - if you can, I'd love to hear from you), and here are ten examples of this very craft. Any other suggestions - this list was a bloody hard one to collate - welcome as always.

    The Smiths
    Paint a Vulgar Picture

Quite possibly the ultimate song about the music industry, almost every single lyric in this track holds true today, over twenty years on. Based around the idea of a record label dealing with the death of one of their artists, their first reaction isn't mourning, but instead how it will boost their bottom line:

    Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!
    Re-evaluate the songs
    Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

    Class.

    Rico
    Manufractured

Now here's an artist who has had his fair share of record label trouble. Indeed, he set up his own label (the title of this song, in fact) to enable the release of his second album, and this slow shuffle of a track is the sound of Rico getting his feelings about the music industry off his chest:

We will release the records your way, your way...
Yeah. That's what they all say

A pointed barb, perhaps, at a number of things that affected him (and surely also at his cover of Psycho Killer, a track I've never seen Rico play live, and as I recall was released as a single against his will).

    16Volt
    The Enemy

The message from this artist's travails with is quite simple: 'fuck the music industry'. And while he has undoubtedly had issues along the way, it is particularly ironic, I guess, that he is the son of a record industry executive...

    Helen Love
Long Live The UK Music Scene

A sneering-but-somehow-gleeful attack on the hysteria surrounding the Britpop boom. Lo-fi, barely-produced Ramones-style pop, the song doesn't amount to much but the lyrics - and the namechecking of all kinds of people from the time - make it an interesting snapshot of the time from some barely-known outsiders...

    Urusei Yatsura
    Super Fi
In fact, the mid-90s appeared to be a great time to be writing comment on other music scenes. Loads of bands were doing it, and these guys were no exception. This was something of a brutal attack on the fanzine culture, and trying to be more indie-than-thou.

    Kenickie
    PlayPunka
A bloody marvellous piece of pop-punk, this (and to this day one of the few Kenickie songs I have any time for at all). And to add to the fun, it's a(nother) vicious attack on indie culture - in this case, the lo-fi scene that tried to flourish for a short while and then either disappeared up it's own arse or went back underground, it's difficult to tell.

    Arctic Monkeys
    TeddyPicker
Bringing things a little more up-to-date, another brilliantly worded song from Sheffield's current band of the moment - whose obtuse lyrics appear to be laying into the various music "talent" shows that take up so much of the Saturday evening TV schedules, and the record labels put so much money into to guarantee quick sales...

    Sheep on Drugs
    Play15 Minutes Of Fame
And along similar lines, 15 Minutes of Fame works in the same kinda way. Maybe not fully about music, but it's sentiment holds true (particularly in the context of what the Arctic Monkeys are on about)...

    Elvis Costello & The Attractions
    Radio Radio
Another marvellous track, this was a protest at the commercial nature of radio (and many station's refusal to play punk at the time, amongst other things). And like many songs in this list, it's argument still holds true today.

    The KLF
For the last item, it isn't a particular song - it's a whole band's output. The KLF's mastery of the music they released, as well as all the stunts besides - the book detailing how to write and release a number one single, their infamous BRIT Awards antics in '92, their "alternative" art award, the burning of £1,000,000 (that was filmed) - was either proof of true pop genius or simply a very elaborate joke. Always doing things their own way - their entire catalogue remains deleted, perhaps a comment on the disposability of pop music? - they are perhaps the ultimate "fuck you" to the music industry.

  • A beginner's guide to Paper Truth.

    25 Jul 2008, 07:48 by vigimael

Additional: If you only want to hear low-fi novelty songs like Bring Back The Old Last.fm, try PlaySong for Thor.

I'll keep this brief - I'm, understandably, annoyed that I seem to be becoming a one-song band with my song PlayBring Back The Old Last.fm - Though it was done with good intentions, I realised this when somebody uploaded to Paper Truth's last.fm profile the Bring Back The Old Last.fm logo. Though I agree with the sentiments and I'm proud of the song's popularity, I refuse to be represented as a musician by this logo. I need to replace this picture, but I don't like my face or have a logo for Paper Truth - I may have to upload a placeholder just for now. I would like people to give the rest of my music a chance, so here's a quick guide to start you off, featuring my own favourites of my songs, and trying to feature a large variety of my sound. Without sounding like I'm bragging, hopefully.

    PlayI Hear You
Written and recorded all in one day, this medium-pace song is popular among those who have listened to me. I didn't sing as usual, as my standard voice hardly fits the song. It could be referred to as a power ballad, I suppose. I'm proud of the scope I've managed to introduce into this song, and the 'descent' riff part.
For fans of: Hope of the States, perhaps? They were in mind when I started writing it.

    PlayCorruption Come
Fast, loud, relentless, commanding is what I was going for. I've tried a punk song several times, and I'm convinced this is my best attempt.
For fans of: Bad Religion and other brain-punk.

    PlayApril 4th
Though simple and written within a day (in a week in which I uploaded three new songs), I am proud of this quite fast and funky instrumental - with riffs flying everywhere, it almost sounds as if I'm any good at guitar.
For fans of: Aggressive, funky instrumentals. Mogwai is an obvious one to say, though the sound isn't too similar.

    PlayKill Fashion
This track was rated 8/10 by John Earls in the Planet Sound (Teletext Channel 4 page 340 or digital Teletext on ITV services page 820) weekly Demo reviews, and I am proud of this. He referred to this electro-tinged trancey song as 'dark dance', and I agree with that. This song involves the least singing, more of a sprechstimme.
For fans of: I've had this track compared to Klaxons and Patrick Wolf but I think it sits closer to The Faint if they were slower.

Play(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
I occasionally cover songs, and I occasionally deem these covers good enough for uploading. I like my arrangement of this song (Original is here: Play(I Don't Want to Go To) Chelsea), which I guess could be pigeonholed within this New Rave thing.
For fans of: Elvis Costello & The Attractions, of course! And, because I said New Rave, Klaxons.

    PlayThe Greatest Day
Another one that didn't take long to write, but I like this track for its simplicity. Perhaps it is clear I was listening to a lot of David Sylvian at the time.
    For fans of: David Sylvian

There are also songs from what I call my old-skool era that I am very proud of but I need to record a better version of.

Now, if you like any of those, why not check out the rest of my Various tracks and keep up with My MySpace? Or PM me to recommend particular tracks if you only like some of it. There's no pressure, but I just don't want to be thought of as that guy who made Bring Back The Old Last.fm, especially as I could've even done a far better recording of the song.

Many thanks to anyone who gives me some time with this!
    Colin

    01. How did you get into #31?

(Thursday) Man, I am not sure I even remember. Actually, wait, I do. This kid Zach - HotWaterMuzach - from the X-Board told me I need to listen to "Cross Out The Eyes" in I think it was 2001. Heard it and loved them, oh my goodness Full Collapse is such a quality record.

    02. What was the first song you ever heard by #22?

(Asobi Seksu) The first song I heard by them is "Everything Is On," the intro to their album Citrus. Never heard them before I got the album.

    03. What's your favorite lyric by #41?

(Small Brown Bike) "Driving through your childhood and all the stories that you've told me since we first met, I get the feeling that you're forgetting to tell me what you're trying to forget. As we walk across the park on the iced-over grass, you start to talk about all the times when, and all the nights when, and the underneath us breaks like glass." I hope this counts, this was from the split collaboration between Small Brown Bike and The Casket Lottery. Technically Nathan Ellis from TCL is singing - the song features Nathan on vocals but Small Brown Bike on instruments. Yeah, I think that counts.

    04. What is your favorite album by #49 ?

(The Decemberists) Hmmm... you know, the Decemberists wear quickly on me. I like certain songs by them a great deal, but i can't listen to any of their records all the way through. If I had to choose one... I'd say Her Majesty.

    05. How many albums by #13 do you own?

(The Velvet Teen) Regrettably I physically own none since all of my albums were stolen from my car in the early 00's. On the iPod I have four full albums: Plus, Minus, Equals, Out Of The Fierce Parade, Elysium, and Cum Laude!

    06. What is your favorite song by #50 ?

(Elvis Costello & The Attractions) Jeez, this one is tough. I guess my gut feeling is either "Alison" or "Watching The Detectives." Probably "Alison." It's just so lovely and sweet sounding with such bitter, cynical lyrics. A real classic.

    07. Is there a song by #4 that makes you sad?

(The Lawrence Arms) Another tough one. Almost any of them, especially some of the early ones, make me sad in the nostalgic sense. The Arms are one of my all-time favorite bands ever, and they will forever remind me of my youth, miserable Chicago winters, and good times spent with close friends. If I had to choose one in particular it would be "Eighteen Inches."

    08. What is your least favorite song by #15?

(The Smiths) They don't have many that I do not like, but "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" is pretty annoying.

    09. What is your favorite song by #5?

(The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up) It was "Seattle" for a long, long time - one of the most heartwrenching songs ever. But I think "Silver Sparkler" has overtaken it in recent years. Jamie from Xiu Xiu's guest vocals are so haunting on it.

    10. Is there a song by #6 that makes you happy?

(The Advantage) Haha, they cover NES songs. All of them make me happy.

    11. What is your favorite album by #40?

(+/-) You Are Here is easily their best album. Solid all the way through.

    12. What is your favorite song by #10?

(Alkaline Trio) Oh God, seriously? Shit, I dunno. It's old, whichever one it is. Probably "I Lied My Face Off." Yeah.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving #32?

(Saves the Day) Haha! Oh my, so many. Road trips with friends singing all the words to Through Being Cool. Seeing them live about 9 or 10 times. Converting a hardcore Christian to their gory lyrics. Covering their songs in Two Months Bender.

    14. What is your favorite song by #37?

(Mason Jennings) "Butterfly." Some others come close, but "Butterfly" is still the best.

    15. Is there a song by #19 that makes you happy?

(The Dismemberment Plan) Awwww, again, so many. God damn it, I miss them. Probably "Bra" makes me laugh the hardest. So quirky. But "The City" is one of my favorite songs ever. One of those two.

    16. How many times have you seen #24 live?

(The Casket Lottery) Twice - once when they opened up for Small brown Bike's final show (@ The Fireside), and once for their own final show (@ Schuba's).

    17. What is the first song you heard by #23?

(Death Cab for Cutie) This is another question that goes back almost a decade. I would have to guess that the first song I ever heard by Death Cab was probably "President of What?" I know it's one of them, for some reason that particular one stands out in my memory.

    18. What is your favorite album by #11?

(Songs: Ohia) Unquestionably The Lioness. One of a handful of my "perfect albums."

    19. Who is your favorite member of #1?

(The Good Life) Tim Kasher, obviously. He has inspired me more than anyone on this entire list. He is a true genius, someone I admire and look up to, and an incredibly nice and humble person.

    20. How many times have you seen #14 live?

(Blockhead) Only once, when he was DJ'ing for Aesop Rock.

    21. What is a good memory you have involving #45?

(Billy Joel) The best memories I have involving Billy Joel are either dancing with my little brother (Michael - Matthew wasn't even born yet)to The Bridge while my parents cleaned the house. Either that or bringing a cassette of "We Didn't Start The Fire" in to class in 5th grade and singing all the words and feeling like I was cool. I wasn't.

    22. What is your favorite song by #16?

(Sigur Rós) Well, I can't say I can pick one out. You don't really listen to individual Sigur Rós songs. The entire albums are an experience.

    23. What is the first song you heard by #47?

(Bats And Mice) Hmmmm... "Worst Comes To Worst?" Maybe? Don't really know.

    24. What is your favorite album by #3?

(Elliott Smith) Ayyyyeeeee!!! Stop it. These are too difficult. Elliott was a genius and all of his albums were wonderful, all of them brought something different to the table, all of them had themes and moods and feelings attached to them. If I had to choose at gunpoint... Either/Or.

    25. What is your favourite song by #18?

(Engine Down) Probably something off Demure<
