haven't written this out to be egotistical, it's just a person reference for myself when I look back in life. I think the music we like and listen to says a lot about who we are. If there was a soundtrack to my life, this would be it, basically.

All For Laura - Andrew Lloyd Webber nb. This is a song from the musical 'The Woman In White' and is the most moving. The musical is important, because if it was never made, I wouldn't be studying Literature, and I wouldn't know of my favourite author, Wilkie Collins, a Victorian novelist.
Shalott - Emilie Autumn nb. I love this song because it is based on my favourite poem of all time: The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson, a Victorian poet (I love the Victorians)
Wuthering Heights - Hayley Westenra nb. I might as well call the section the Victorian section! Inspired me to read one of my favourite books by Victorian writer Emily Bronte.

Private Charts

Since people keep asking me, I will post an overview of the "strange artists" I have in my private charts and some others worth mentioning, which do not turn up here since I only have them on vinyl. I will develop the whole story over time and spread it over several entries.

Paris Combo is a French jazz band with a very gifted female singer. I have discovered them through the recommendations of last.fm! In Germany, you will find them only in special world music shops (like Einklang in Stuttgart - a wonderful shop for jazz, classical music, and world music). Some of my favourite tracks are Fibre de verre or Istanbul.

By the way, my other favourite record shop in Stuttgart is Second Hand Records. Since the web page seems to be down at the moment, here is the address: Second Hand Records, Holzstr. 21 (Charlottenplatz), 70173 Stuttgart, Tel. 0711 / 26 04 04.

Raduza is a Czech singer and accordeon player. I do not understand a word she sings, but there are some very soulful songs (e.g. Vetre muj). I have heard her first in Freies Radio für Stuttgart.

I will create a separate entry for rock bands playing in German dialect (and Swiss German, which I am not allowed to call a German dialect).

Eva Cassidy is probably much better known than all the other artist I have mentioned before. The young singer with the perfect voice has died in 1996, just before she became world famous. Her recording of Over the Rainbow is said to have stopped people in the streets of London since they were so touched by her performance.

Yann Tiersen is a French composer of many sound tracks ("Amelie" and "Good-bye Lenin") and other wonderful music.

Cesária Évora is a from the Cape Verde Islands and sings in Portuguese creole. Her dark voice and the right feeling for rythm and speed, which I always admire but find in few musicians, make every song an adventure. Listen to her album Cafe Atlantico to get a first impression.

I have described the music from the film "Crossing the Bridge" in a separate entry.

Lydie Auvray, the French that spent several years in Germany, is for the lovers of accordeon music. Her musettes are spectacular. I like Maigret's letzter Fall most.

Maná from Mexico will not need an introduction to fans in the USA and Latin America; however, in Germany they could need some more attention, that's why I drag it to their most popular song: En El Muelle De San Blas.

I found Colonel Bagshot through DJ Shadow, who used Six Day War (listen to this rare song here). The band is so rarely heard that it took me quite some time to find the only copy of their album "Oh what a lovely war" on sale in this world - in the online shop of a second hand record specialist somewhere near New York.

The DJ Shadow version (Six Days), by the way, I found on Vinylizer, a Hamburg based team that produces its program "Back to the Basics" for several radio stations in the region, with a very well balanced mixture of hot new tracks and cool oldies - listen to their web radio! And where did I find the Vinylizer? There was a link on http://www.rotationsverbot.de/, a web site that fights against less and less musical variety in German radio stations.
