Fanfara Ciocarlia is a brass band of Gypsy heritage that adeptly manages to straddle two very different worlds. After playing together as a unit for less than six years, the band’s 11 members can perform joyously throughout the customary 30 hours that some of their traditional ceremonies can last, and equally as well on a concert stage half way around the world. On Saturday night band members could entertain wedding guests in Zece Prajini, their Gypsy village located in eastern Romania, and by Sunday morning they could be jetting off to another continent. German director Ralf Marschalleck filmed a documentary, Iag Bari—Brass on Fire, that captures the best of Fanfare Ciocarlia’s diverse worlds. The film was released in 2002. The band blends elements of the music from Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and the Gypsies. Its musicians take pride in their ability to play as an extremely fast and tight unit, utilizing timpani, trumpets, horns, and clarinets.

As if "world" would be more descriptive. I'd rather put all the south-eastern european countries together in one tag together. I do think it describes that type of music much better than the tag "world" which unites music from the balkan region with music from east asia for example. That is pretty far off and despite all differences much farer off than e.g. romanian, serbian and macedonian music. Sorry for that!

And maybe listen to some genuine folk Romanian music, you'll see the difference. The tag itself, 'balkan', is confusing because the music tagged 'balkan' blends the cultural heritage of many countries, especially south-eastern European countries. I'd rather tag Fanfare Ciocarlia as 'world'.

@crckbtch : All I can say is that Bregovic's track Kalasnjikov is a cover version of the traditional Romanian tune 'Ciocârlia' (which actually lends its name to the Fanfare). Here is Fanfare's version. Maybe FC in turn borrowed some music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, i don't know. @mattcobalta : isn't it? :)
