Their first album, Short Bus, was released in 1995. The album was successful, and included the hit single “Hey Man, Nice Shot”. The song was somewhat controversial, as it was seen as capitalizing on the public suicide of Budd Dwyer. Kurt Cobain’s suicide was widely rumored to have inspired the song, but the band refuted this. In 1996, Filter recorded and filmed the video for the song “Jurrassitol”, for The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack. They also released the home video Phenomenology in 1996, which showcased some of the band’s live performances and music videos, as well as an interview with Richard Patrick and Brian Liesegang filmed in New Mexico.
Liesegang left in 1997. In 1998, for The X-Files film soundtrack, Filter recorded a cover of Three Dog Night’s ‘One’. Patrick, along with new collaborator Geno Lenardo, continued on with 1999’s Title Of Record, which moved away from industrial rock somewhat, and produced a modest hit with “Take A Picture” (which was used as a song on the Little Nicky soundtrack). Other singles included “Welcome To The Fold”, “The Best Things” and a collaboration with The Crystal Method called “(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do”. That song was based on one of The Crystal Method’s earlier songs, Trip Like I Do, off their album Vegas, and was recorded for the Spawn soundtrack.

I'm really disappointed by the new album. Kill the day is the only song on it that I really like it.

I remember this band kinda hopped on the NIN train back in the late 90's when it paid off... Problem is that when you're as derivative as they were, your popularity diminishes proportionately to the original, or you're left hanging when the original mutates and people move on to other things. Which is basically what happened with these dudes. They're... Ok. Time hasn't served them well.

The only song I like from this band is Where Do We Go From Here, and that's it. Other than that, this band is cool and original.

I wanted to go to the show in Chicago but couldn't because it was a 18+ show. So me and my best friend drove up to Milwaukee to Summerfest. So worth it!!! Richard's voice was great and the whole band put on an awesome show. :) I recommend anyone to go, Richard is completely different sober than he was on the Amalgamut tour.

He has, he was a lot nicer when I saw him about a month ago, and he's sober.

Last time I saw Filter was the start of his Amalgamut tour. It was one of the worst shows I had ever seen. Richard Patrick was so drugged out of his mind - I still had enough respect to meet some of the band mates, and Richard decided he didn't like how his bandmates played so he fucking scribbled out all of the other band member's signatures and left his on my CD. Douchebag.. Truth is, he was just as horrible if not worse on stage as they were. From my experience, these guys can make a great sounding in-studio album, but they just don't cut it with live performances. I've seen them twice in my life, the first being sub-par and that last one being completely horrible. Maybe he's cleaned up his act, I don't know, but I don't have alot of personal respect for Rich.
