Flying Lotus
Along with our regular coterie of new releases from old friends like Stereolab and Wire, we pay particular attention this week to a cassette only compilation which came out in Switzerland in 1987 - “The Sampling Sampler - Synthetische Klänge aus der Schweiz”. Curated by Reto Caduff of electronic pop outfit Séance, this was to serve as a synthetic antidote to the wave of psychedelic pop rock acts springing up in the mid-80s.
We also join LA-based Lucky Dragons in their play pen of rocks, snakes and electric toys. With his album Los Angeles out (and his Parisian Goldfish video stirring up blogs around the world), Flying Lotus did not sleep! There’s a remix for Radiohead’s competition, on which you can vote. And then you might remember Laura Darlington, voice on the tracks Unexpected Delight and infinitum, also wife of fellow Daedalus. Well, Mr. and Mrs. Darlington have this project The Long Lost and will release their debut EP on Ninja Tune this autumn. Flying Lotus did two remixes for that, both are available for download. -

There's a transatlantic relationship that for a long time has seen musical ideas bounce between Jamaica and the UK. Kevin Martin's music as The Bug – along with the similar Razor X project – is a glitch in that narrative, combining dancehall culture with a background in dense experimental projects like God, Ice and Techno Animal. The British producer abducts vocalists to frequently harsh, out-there places created with techno, noise and rave techniques. There's some parallel there with breakcore's junglist appropriation of soundbites, but with none of the uprooted flippancy, setting Martin apart and putting him more genuinely in the story...

José James Remix Album

If you didn't have a chance to get the remixes from the vinyl-records, you can now find all the previously released José James remixes (plus others!) on Dreamer for Club Lovers (snippets!). However, it seems Brownswood Recordings releases the CD in Japan only, but usually copies find their way to U.S. or European retailers aswell.
The collection features mixes from Simbad, IG Culture, Yam Who, Moodymann, Ben Westbeech and a collaboration with Flying Lotus. -
