Sat 20 Oct – Idlewild

Seriously what the crap is going on with Roddy Woomble’s hair?! This is one question that was sadly not answered during Idlewild’s gig in Fat Sam’s on Saturday 20th October.

Support in the form of local lads Descartes was alright. Silly hair and unintelligible stage banter (I was able to make out something about one of them working in H&M…) but what are you gunna do, that’s scene kids in Dundee innit. Technically they’re pretty tight, they have a couple of catchy songs, and of course they’re on Myspazz, so go forth and check em oot for yourself.

Up next, The Twilight Sad were lovely. Seriously. That’s all I’ve really got on them. I’m going to buy the album. You should too.

Idlewild themselves… man, I dunno. My stats will testify that I love this band, but I wasn’t blown away by their performance. For me they were somewhat static. The set focussed a bit too much on the slow stuff, meandering through the likes of Love Steals Us From Loneliness,Let Me Sleep (Next to the Mirror), You Held the World in Your Arms and Once in Your Life without much real enthusiasm. There’s only so much time you can spend gently swaying along to songs at a gig, however anthemic they might be.

There were good moments of course, with crowd pleasers such as A Modern Way of Letting Go upping the ante and getting the audience dancing and singing along. But tension onstage during a minor cockup towards the end was both palpable and uncomfortable, with spiky comments from a pissed off Roddy putting a bit of a dampener on the atmosphere.

Having said all that, the encore was pretty awesome, and indicated that they still have something, even if they can only provide it in short bursts. Also, the welcome inclusion of Chandelier may actually have made the life of one of the people I went with... or at least his week. :P
