His songs and voice makes my heart skip. I can't remember the last time a voice made me cry, besides Jeff Buckley. Dare I say, I think I love this man more than Jeff Buckley. He is perfect to listen to while in the dark when it is calm and still. Let's see you not cry...from happiness and wonder at the beauty of his music (and the Johnsons). You can only listen in silence and can't help thinking how GORGEOUS, AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL his voice is. Simply blown away.

Antony Hegarty
4 Sep 2008, 06:17 by K-songs
oh, I can't stop weeping. I have just discovered Antony Hegarty and I can't get enough. I came across him a 5 days ago when I was watching the documentary on Leonard Cohen, Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man and this strange chubby long haired man was singing the song
If It Be Your Will and I was mesmerised. Unfortunately my mother was washing the dishes, so I couldn't watch it in silence. Antony Hegarty moves/performs in a strange way. It looked quite awkward, but with his stunning voice, nothing else mattered. It could have come from a goat and it wouldn't have mattered. My net just came back today, so I downloaded as many albums as I could, based on that one performance. It doesn't matter what he sings. I am in love. How appearances can deceive. I can't wait to buy the albums of Antony and the Johnsons. If you are not moved by this...you are either cold or...I don't know what's wrong with you. I am still crying.

My Music, Sticking A Microphone In The Ear Of…Me
1 Sep 2008, 18:50 by just_1988
The LP that’s made the biggest impression…
It Takes A Nation of Millions To old Us Back – Public Enemy
I got this album when I was about 16 and listening to the relentless sirens on the album gives a real sense of panic in the music, which is further boosted by the hardcore hip-hop poetry, which is splurged out of the mouth of Chuck D. Once you add the eccentricity of Flavour Flav (who used to run around with a clock hanging from his necklace, bling bling, eh?), you have the perfect recipe for a fantastic rap cake.
Check out:
Bring The Noise – Public Enemy
The song that makes me emotional…
Hurricane - Bob Dylan
Well, i wouldn't go as far as saying emotional, but this is a song based on a true story about an African-American boxer who gets convicted of a double-murder that he didn’t commit. Dylan really gets across the feeling of helplessness of this promising boxer who can’t do anything about the charge, which faces him. Dylan’s lyrical arrangement is fantastic, the way he slowly builds up the story of Ruben Carter over the 7+ minutes of the song.
Check out: Nashville Skyline – Bob Dylan
My guilty pleasure…
UB40
I don’t know what it is about them, but I can’t help but sing along to all of their singles, who would have thought a white reggae band from Birmingham would actually be that good?
Check out:
Kingston Town – UB40
All new bands should hear…
Pills, Thrills N’ Bellyaches - Happy Mondays
An album that in it’s essence is a hippy album, that Happy Mondays really weren’t a great band, they didn’t even make great music, but they connected to a niche that was crying out to be reached-out to, dance music, but made in a sort of indie sort of way, full of acceptable bouncy tunes, it would give any new band an idea of how to make their music a bit more dance friendly.
Check out: Kinky Afro – Happy Mondays
Just before I die, I want to hear…
Halleljuah - Jeff Buckley
What a great song, full of emotion and always makes you think when you listen to it, plus after listening to this you’ll be ready to die anyway. Buckley’s harrowing lyrical delivery far exceeds the original Leonard Cohen version.
Check out: Jeff Buckley – Jeff Buckley
I’ve played to the death…
Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
I got into this album when I was in college and it was immense! I’d play it over all the time, I’d say between 5-10 times a week. Every song on it makes an impact, whether it’s the anthems like
She Bangs the Drums,
I Wanna Be Adored and
I Am the Resurrection. Or if it’s the anti-monarchy song
Elizabeth My Dear, this was the soundtrack to my college years.
Check out:
Waterfall – Stone Roses
A record by a hero is…
The World Is Yours - Ian Brown
How did a gob-shite from Manchester get a “Godlike Genius” award from the NME? Well simple, he gave up booze, took up smoking marijuana everyday and decided to become philosophical, in this album he does everything from complain about the war in Iraq to using a slogan from the movie ‘Scarface’ to express his desire to get his voice heard. An album that I came out the week that I started university, its no coincidence it became on of my favourite albums during my first year there.
Check out:
Illegal Attacks – Ian Brown feat. Sinéad O'Connor
Everyone should hear…
(What’s The Story?) Morning Glory - Oasis
An album, which nobody has a bad word to say about (well that’s not entirely true, people nit-pick for the sake of it). Every track is a classic, an album that catapulted Oasis to the fore-front of Brit-Pop. This album epitomises the phrase ‘lad band’, with Liam Gallagher’s brash vocal delivery and Noel Gallagher’s entrancing guitar rhythms it’s not hard to see why the album changed a generation.
Check out:
Champagne Supernova – Oasis
“And I also Think You Should…”
Watch…
Ali
A great biopic film, it really celebrates the legend that is Muhammad Ali, there is a thin line between legend and myth, there is no doubt in my mind, Muhammad Ali’s actions where the stuff of legend and not myth.
Read…
A Bit of A Blur – Alex James
The biography of Blur’s bass player, Alex James. It’s a tail of rock & roll excess, bad hangovers, great parties and better groupies.
Buy…
An acoustic guitar
If you’re into music you’ve got to have your own acoustic guitar, even if you don’t use it that often, give it a go, it won’t be a waste of money. -

My top twenty absolutely indispensable records.
23 Aug 2008, 20:37 by OuiTisRoz
It has already been a year since I made my list of the top ten records I simply could not exist without. And now, the following August, the time has some to give an updated version. This time, you may have already noticed that I cheated a little, and in fact made a TOP TWENTY. Well, okay. It might have also come to your attention - if you are avid enough a stalker - that some of my favourite artists are missing; Eels, Death Cab for Cutie, Regina Spektor, and David Bowie, for example. I would love to have them in my list, but... I just can't choose which album I like best. So - andiamo!
(P.S. This is in ascending order. The tension rises, therefore, as you get closer and closer to the end. Who will be the lucky winner?)
20. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (2008 in Europe)
An album I've owned for a month, if anything, making my top twenty? Pull the other one! But really, from the first time, this blew me away. Call it psychedelic electro glam indie, call it what you want, es ist mir egal... all I know is that it's fantastic, and it's the soundtrack to my summer 2008.
19. Röyksopp - Melody A.M (2001)
Despite its name, I find this must always be listened to at night. Put this on, and imagine you are in a wooden cabin in the fjords of Norway. This chilled-out album inspires me.
18. Elliott Smith - XO (1998)
Again, a relatively new candidate. It took some listens to get me to realise that this indeed is music that understands what our deepest woes would sound like if they had a voice and fingers. Melancholy, yet.. comforting and soft.
17. Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine (2004)
I maintain that it is a physical impossibility to listen to this while sitting stationary. I can't explain it. It is something you have to experience for yourself. It may scare you. But above all, it will amaze you with its proof that heavy noise can be tuneful and clever.
16. Feist - Let It Die (2004)
People who are cynical at the omnipresence of the 2007 single "1,2,3,4" should listen to this. I must say it is some of the most beautiful, sensual, autumnal-night music I have heard. Feist's (who I discovered through Broken Social Scene) voice carries very well, as does the emotion she puts into it at times, and her lyrics are great. The genres here vary from lounge jazz to disco. Very nice.
15. Muse - Origin of Symmetry (2001)
Bit of an oldie (in my terms) but still great. Of course, everyone knows what Muse sound like, don't they? Some actually argue this album is weak in comparison with later ones, but I think it is mighty. You only need to check out "Citizen Erased" (my all-time favourite Muse song) and "Megalomania" to confirm this.
14. Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds (2006)
After you've finished LOLing at the title, focus on the fine talent of Owen Pallett. He has imagination, and a gift for, well, fantasy story-telling; something lacking in almost all artists of the present day. And he is a pleasing violinist. This could be from personal experience, but: it is essential to take this with a fruit tea.
13. Metric – Live It Out (2005)
A fundamental component of my Canadian-music-obsession. This album just has one great song after another, each growing on you, and Emily Haines has a sexy voice. Enjoy.
12. The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)
My first `Lips album, and a firm favourite even before I heard the others. It takes you to another world, to outer space, to Japan… you can forget all the neuroses in your day-to-day life. “Do You Realize??” alone would more than suffice, if you were only allowed to listen to one song in your whole life.
11. Hole – Live Through This (1994)
The fact that this album got me through dark years in my life makes it already a classic. Getting me through it in that it added more darkness, curiously. Yes, it is Courtney Love; but she is a damn good songwriter. I think this is a case where it is impossible to explain what it means to you, because nobody will really understand.
10. Maxïmo Park – Our Earthly Pleasures (2007)
Isn’t the second album of an indie band always meant to be more commercialised? Geared towards a wider market? With Maxïmo, this seems to be the opposite case. The first effort was full of catchy pop hooks, with only the slightest smidgeon of seriousness, shown in songs like “Acrobat”. But this album here, for me, establishes Paul Smith’s place as a great modern poet. The lyrics could happily just be read on their own; each word has been chosen with great care. And the result is romantic – yet at the same time, so very true to life.
9. Jeff Buckley – Grace (1994)
Aural beauty. Sweet pain. A lost talent. Alright, maybe I will never be employed as a film tagline-writer, but the divinity of this album escapes words.
8. The Doors – The Doors (1967)
This played a big part in childhood memories – for example, journeys to my grandpa’s would not be complete without “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)”, and I have come to the decision that I will have “The Crystal Ship” played at my funeral, for its exquisiteness. The sound is just great – it radiates summer evenings. It makes me feel a little sad, too.
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers – By The Way (2002)
It could be argued that this was the first album that made me like decent music. My love of RHCP has continued throughout the years, and I have that mentality wherein I really don’t care what anyone says about them. This softer, more melodic sound, that was found on the preceding “Californication”, is here, but enhanced in so many ways. Reminds me of beautiful sunsets, the end of childgood and the beginning of youth.
6. The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead (1984)
Morrissey was, and still is, a great poet. I can see why in the 1980s, this was a great relief – pop music, but not stopping the lyrics being meaningful; full of humour, irony, and misery. The reason I put this on top of The Smiths’ other records is because initially I found this the most accessible. I then moved onto the astounding “Meat is Murder”.
5. The Divine Comedy – Promenade (1994)
A wonderful story of a perfect day, told in charming strings, piano, and of course Neil Hannon’s voice; with many literary and cinematic references. This is music to live your life to, and to dream about.
4. The Dears – No Cities Left (2003)
Canadian music, with Morrisseyesque vocals; and, if pushed, able to fall under the wide category of “dark pop”. When I listen to this, the sound makes me think of being alone by the sea, the wind in my hair, and a storm brewing. This album really focuses on the human emotions. It dramatises and exaggerates, the little things which break people’s hearts each day.
3. The Postal Service – Give Up (2003)
Wonderful electro-pop which seems to fit any situation – happy or sad – and any time of the year. The lyrics seem to focus on city life and teen relationships, and are never short of breathtaking. These can range from “I'll be the fire escape / that's bolted to the ancient brick / where you will sit and contemplate your day” to “I was waiting for a cross-town train in the London underground / when it struck me / that I've been waiting since birth to find a love that would look and sound / like a movie”. An investment into being overwhelmed.
2. Pixies – Doolittle (1989)
Nonsensical lyrics. Vocals varying from squawky to falsetto. Surfy guitar. Dreams of the Pacific (even though the Pixies are actually from Massachussetts). All this makes the other record that got me through my dark years. If Hole’s “Live Through This” was adding insult to injury, this was the light at the end of the tunnel.
1. Arcade Fire – Funeral (2004)
THIS MUSIC IS THE SONIC EQUIVALENT OF A SUNNY AFTERNOON WANDERING THROUGH A GARDEN OF ROSES, FOLLOWED BY AN EVENING BY THE FIRE WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE. Let it do what it wants to you. Let it steal your soul – because they were probably siblings who were separated at the dawn of time, anyway. -

Never before...

Fri 15 Aug – Bon Iver, A.A. Bondy
...have I ever been "moved" by anything; ever. That was until I attended this event. Never before has music brought me near tears, save for Jeff Buckley when I first heard him. Never before have I seen a performance so filled with honesty, integrity, and ENERGY! And even though there were 1500 of us there, it felt like there was a near spiritual connection with Bon Iver and the audience.
I am somewhat disappointed though, since I will never see anything as great as this (that is of course until next time they're through), but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world.
