Country Mike's Hauraki Hoedown Playlist
7 Aug 2006, 22:14 by pumicehead
Here is the playlist for Country Mike’s Hauraki Hoedown on Beach Radio for Monday August 7th, 2006.
Of note tonight I thought was a kind of experimental piece (way out of line from my usual faire), by a guy called Mazen Kerbaj who recorded this piece "Starry Night" from the balcony of his flat in Beirut with himself on trumpet and the Israeli airforce providing the percussion, er...bombs! Eerie and quite disturbing; you can grab a copy from the link in the playlist.
Ten Little Kids - The Jayhawks
Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine - The White Stripes
Portland, Oregon - Loretta Lynn
Arthritis Blues - Ramblin' Jack Elliott (w/ David Hidalgo)

i've been listening to a bunch of The Carter Family, Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs as well as The Flatlanders, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and other stuff on the hillbilly-to-honkytonk spectrum.
i beg those who 'hate country' to reflect a minute on this: The Clash toured extensively with Joe Ely in the opening slot in 1979/1980 both in the US and back in the UK. This was back when he was still pretty purely honkytonk/country/spaceranger-songwriter.
Even if you hate the clash, i hope you'll try to see that the best of 'country' music appeals across genre lines, just like the best of almost any genre does. the best of any genre tends to transcend the bounds of the 'genre' limitation.
so, for those 'anything but country' people out there... maybe you should try some before you continue to piss on it. eh? -
FAR & Away 05
20 Jan 2006, 18:51 by jcshepard
Texas-based 3rd Coast Music magazine (TCMN) sponsors the Freeform American Roots (FAR) chart. The FAR list is a monthly survey of real-live free form DJs, mostly on non-profit & community radio, from the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Australia and New Zealand.
I don’t always agree with the collective wisdom—I’m more of an alt-country guy than a folkie. Still their year-end Best-Of list is usually a good Roots music preview of break-out artists and below-the-radar comebacks you’ll be listening to, or at least wish you were.
