Joe Jackson (born August 11, 1954 in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, as David Ian Jackson) is a British musician. Jackson is probably best-known for the 1982 hit song
Steppin’ Out, which still gets extensive FM radio airplay, and for his 1979 hit,
Is She Really Going Out with Him?
Although born in Staffordshire, Jackson grew up in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.
He started off learning to play the violin but soon switched to piano. From the age of 16 he played in bars, and won a scholarship to study musical composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music. Jackson did not like the prospect of being a serious composer, and moved towards pop and rock.
His first band was Arms and Legs which collapsed after two unsuccessful singles. He then spent some time in the cabaret circuit to make money to record his own demos.
In 1978 a producer heard his tape, and got him signed to A&M Records. The album Look Sharp! was recorded straight away, and was released in 1979, quickly followed by I’m the Man and Beat Crazy in 1980. He also collaborated with Lincoln Thompson in reggae crossover.
The Joe Jackson Band was very successful and toured extensively. After the breakup of the band, Joe took a break and recorded an album of old-style swing and blues tunes, Jumpin’ Jive, featuring songs of Cab Calloway, Lester Young, Glenn Miller, and most prominently, Louis Jordan.

Though his first albums where almost heard by punks, he made clear with his "jumpin' jive" Album that he has much more in mind. And with "Slow Song" he already climbed the rock-classic-heaven. And if we did not have MTV who tells us what to have in the charts, he still would be "number one". But as he always has been a rebel, he did not let MTV rule his life. And he shows, that still musicians can sell albums by just being good musicians and not being promoted by MTV.

I never considered Joe or Elvis Costello "Punk". Just great music. Punk was great too. These titles that PR people throw around are so deceptive. It must be awful to have to fall into a category because it's the next big thing.

Yes, what a terrific collaboration it would have been if he 'd made a record with Andy Partridge of XTC !!!

Everything thats any good in the "punk" genre was just there because the so called "They" were dumbfounded as to where else to put them

He was never a punk and he was clear about that. There was a confusion due to a few titles which sounded like punk-rock music on his 3 first albums. But above all he's a terrific composer, a damned writer, he's simply a hell of a musician and he doesn't give up, whatever the bumber of years passing by. I think he deserves total respect even if I don't like all the stuff that he did. "Volume 4" was a real good rock album 20 years after the 1-2-3 numbers. This guys is amazing. HE'S THE MAN!!!!

You have to remember that what we call punk today isn't the same thing as it was when it came out. The Go Gos were considered a punk band, for example. The first couple of Joe Jackson albums were classified that way as well. Look Sharp! has strong punk elements in the compositions, and even the transitional album Beat Crazy has punk influence on many songs.

Night and Day is an outstanding album, in that the two sides of the album (yes, I'm that old) represented night and day, and the music reflected it. An all-time great!

He's heavily influenced by punk. Especially his first few albums. Wouldn't call Jackson full-out punk, though.

I know some of his longtime fans are pissed that his song was used in a commercial; but I would tell those fans....that commercial brought me here. My point is sometimes selling-out is not always the bad thing. If you create something special why not make money off of it........and at the same time, bring in new fans. Like myself.

If I got pissed every time a song I liked got used in an advertisement, I'd have to make it a full-time career.
