About this track

“Good Life” is the Grammy Award winning third single from rapper Kanye West’s album Graduation. It features R&B artist T-Pain and uses sampled keys from the song “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” as performed by Michael Jackson. The single was officially released on October 2, 2007, even though it had already charted.

History

The song was first revealed when a portion of it was performed live during a concert in Manchester, England on July 2, 2007. He sung the first complete verse at his concert in Québec on July 13, 2007. The full song was performed for the first time during the Recording Academy’s Leadership Award Ceremony for Quincy Jones on July 28, 2007. An uncut version of the song was also used during the closing credits in an episode of the HBO series, Entourage, in which West made an appearance. West also performed the song at the MTV Video Music Awards along with T-Pain. “Good Life” was released to iTunes on September 11, 2007 when Graduation became available for digital download. In the song, West borrows a line from 50 Cent’s “In da Club” in which he raps, “50 told me, go ‘head switch the style up, and if they hate, then let ‘em hate, and watch the money pile up.” In the chorus, T-Pain borrows a line from West’s song “School Spirit.” The Michael Jackson song “P.Y.T.” is also sampled throughout the track.
