The name King Crimson was coined by Peter Sinfield as a synonym for Beelzebub, prince of demons. According to Fripp, Beelzebub is an anglicised form of the Arabic phrase “B’il Sabab”, meaning “the man with an aim”. However, the original name is understood to be from ba’al zebul, “Lord of the Seat”.
King Crimson’s debut album In The Court Of The Crimson King is considered by some to be one of the most influential albums of progressive rock. The first major success of the new genre of progressive rock, many bands that would come to dominate prog in the 1970’s first sought to emulate In the Court of the Crimson King, including Genesis, The Alan Parsons Project, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and later Rush. King Crimson continues to have an influence on progressive rock today, bands such as Tool and The Mars Volta citing them as influences.
The lineup of King Crimson changed drastically from album to album. Original lead singer and bassist Greg Lake went on to fame with Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1970 (as did lyricist Peter Sinfield), replaced by Gordon Haskell, Boz Burrell, and, briefly, Jon Anderson of Yes. Also from Yes came drummer Bill Bruford, who joined King Crimson in 1972 and became one of the more enduring members.

In The Woods... - Three Times Seven On A Pilgrimage. I didn't know what songs are on the album, and was very surprised with the third one :). I also recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Claiming that black metal features "masturbatory guitar solos and growled vocals" is like saying King Crimson ripped off Led Zeppelin and Rush.

Gordian Knot's 'Gordian Knot' kicks ass too, I really recommend it, as any other sideproject of Sean Malone or Paul Masvidal ;}

And what I find awesome is how Opeth and Cynic are both connected to King Crimson. Mike Akerfeldt is pals with Steve Wilson, who's toured with KC and his drummer Gavin Harrison plays with em. And members of Cynic I believe have played with Bill Bruford in other sideprojects.

JAZZ is based on swung notes, basically. Poster below me is correct in that Cynic is the most heavily Jazz influenced metal band.

Well, maybe you're right LucifericLumber (cause I know nothing about music theory), but call it "a mix of death metal, Prog Rock and something that sounds like jazz, but isn't cause it's not 'based on improvising'" would sound stupid :)

Urbanboogie wrote:
You wanna high-class jazz influenced metal - you listen to Cynic. You wanna play jazz - you need no specific music-theory. An instrument and a pair of ears might come in handy. Jazz harmonies be not invented by music theorists! First jazz artists new shit about theory. You wanna play like King Crimson - you better give up ;] Hawk!

LucifericLumber: You are an idiot. There is plenty of Jazz in Opeth's music, listen to "Face of Melinda" off of Still Life.

Yes! on the 30th of august I've seen Pat, Tony, Adrian and Eddie Jobson performing Red and Lark's-II. Fuck yeah, I'll die with the smile on my face, surely. PS. Opeth has nothin from jazz, assholes. If something sounds like jazzy moment it doesnt mean that it is jazz. Stop fucking use thiz word everywhere. Jazz is an based on improvising according to specific muzik-theory. Opeth has no such thing there fore kill yourselves, progstyz. Jazz is not aboot how it soundz, it's aboot harmonical sence of relations between parts of the music.

@Hellequin53: Try Opeth and Agalloch; Opeth is a mixture between Death Metal, Prog Rock and Jazz (i think you should start with the album Watershed). Agalloch is a mixture between Black Metal and Prog Rock (listen to the song 'Not Unlike the Waves'). :)
