Milan, Italy (1994 – present)
At the end of 1997 Andrea Ferro and Marco Coti Zelati formed Sleep of Right, but soon changed their name to Ethereal, and signed to Century Media. Finding that the name Ethereal was already taken, they changed their name to Lacuna Coil, which is Italian for “empty spiral”.
Lacuna Coil’s music is inspired by gothic imagery and gothic metal music, and the members have been known, musically, for composing midtempo songs consisting of guitar lines overlaid with prominent keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic detached sound.
Much of the band’s recent material, however, sees a more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs. According to the band, they are and have been influenced by Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Anathema, Septic Flesh, Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, Imago Mortis, Depeche Mode, In Flames, and Amorphis amongst others.

Unleashed Memories and Comalies are two best albums ever. Karmacode is a step towards mainstream.

I used to love them a few years ago, but now I hardly ever listen to them... maybe I'll try listening to them again.

Gothic metal it is not, much less gothic in general. Taggers get a clue, true gothic metal branches from doom metal.

For all the people that listen to Tarja 's solo career that tag it as Tarja Turunen. Correct your tags..the correct tag is Tarja. Thanks in the advance.

interestingly, beside other female fronted "so called" gothic-rock bands, they are better live than in the studio, especially the tracks from karmacodeare excellent live, where the tuning and mood is a lot better. However, I still think Unleashed memories is their outstanding album :).

I agree completely with Dessums, and I hope they'll keep up with that with the new album. And I can't say that I agree with Karmacode sounding like Evanescence, coming from a former huuuuuuge Evanescence fan. Two completely different atmospheres.

Dessums wrote:
What I like is how all of their albums are different and great in their own way. It shows that they're evolving and not just sticking to the same thing. In a Reverie is a wonderful album, but if all of their albums were like that, I can't say I'd enjoy them as much.

I like Karmacode a lot, personally. In fact, if I ever have the urge to listen to Lacuna Coil, it'll usually be Karmacode, In a Reverie, or their self-titled EP.

Wow evilangela, your quite an un-pretentious, open minded, and attractive girl aren'tcha? *cough* *cough*

I disagree with evilangela a lot. Unleashed Memories is certainly a great CD, probably their best, but Karmacode is still awesome. Listen to "The Game" and tell me it isn't.
