Formed in 1994 while members were attending music school in Baltimore, Maryland, Lake Trout has incorporated numerous styles into their music. Members Woody Ranere (guitar and vocals), Matt Pierce (keyboards, flute, saxophone and vocals), Ed Harris (guitar), James Griffith (bass) and Mike Lowry (drums) have touring with an assortment of live acts, playing almost any venue (from small shows in basement clubs to live outdoor gigs like Bonnaroo). While Lake Trout’s sound has evolved during their decade-long career the band has always maintained a certain musicianship that straddles between a jazz-quintet and a 5-piece rock band. The band can play many styles, such as mellow jazz-inflicted vocal numbers, hard free-form rock, repetitive minimalist guitar passages and ambient drum ‘n bass. Their most recent studio albums are more decidedly rock-oriented, as the band’s sound continues to evolve.

Lake Trout first released an eponymous album in 1997, consisting of 6 vocal songs and 2 instrumental pieces with interspersed solos throughout. These early songs features Pierce on alto saxophone, an instrument he would abandon with later releases. The sound here was a funky, contemporary jazz-rock fusion leaning towards more rock-oriented song structures. 1998 saw the release of a longer, 15 song album entitled Volume for the Rest of It. There are more instrumental songs here, as the band explores more musical territory. Griffith’s fuzz bass is prominent on several songs, as is Lowry’s frantic break-beat drumming.
