  • Rakkautta & Anarkiaa 18.-28.9.2008

    6 Sep 2008, 19:54 by durianisti

Yks-kaks!

Katson velvollisuudekseni kohottaa elokuvayleisön tietoisuuteen R&A-tarjonnan kaikkiaan 128 elokuvan joukosta herkkutärppejä yhden sarjakortillisen verran eli 11 namirainaa. Kyllä näillä tajuntansa räjäyttää paremmin kuin pussillisella muusia:

Bruce LaBruce: Otto; or, Up with Dead People
Kaikkein eniten keski-ikäistyvän festarin villeiltä alkuvuosilta onkin kaivattu juuri kanadalaisen homoporsastelun mestarin railakkaan rosoisia nyrkkinaintikuvauksia, kuten Skin off my ass ja muut mustavalkoiset hardcoret. Lienee varmaan vanhaherra LaBrucekin seesteytynyt vuosien saatossa, mutta silti paluu festariohjelmistoon pitkän tauon jälkeen ansaitsee liikuttuneet aplodit.

Seksuaalisuuden ja ihmissuhteiden teemaa jatkaa brittiläinen nykydraama Chris Waitt: A Complete History of My Sexual Failures dokumentin muodossa.

Alex Gibney: Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson lienee myös välttämätön katsastettava, vaikka kysessä onkin postuumi dokumentti gonzon mestarista ja luojasta. Kyllä tuo varmaan syventää Johnny Deppin niin hyvin visualisoimaa kuvaa gonzosekoilusta Las Vegasissa ja muualla. Odotan innolla.

Jotta dokumenttien osuus saadaan varmasti yliedustettua, media-alalla joskus puuhanneita kiinnostaa varmasti typografian juurille tähtäävä Gary Hustwit: Helvetica.

Bollywoodia on tänä vuonna tarjolla eri teemoissa kolmisen kappaletta, mistä lienee välttämätön valita ainakin toinen näistä Shahrukh Khanin tähdittämistä Farah Khan: Om Shanti Om. Ainakin mainosjulisteeseen jo keski-ikäiseksi ehtineelle Shahrukhille on saatu photoshopattua sellainen pyykkilauta ja kasarikuontalo, ettei pikkutyttöjen korviasärkevä kiljunta ole minkäänlainen ihme. (Kts. kuva yllä, wink wink, nudge nudge!)

Uusi aasialainen elokuva on aina ollut R&A:n kovinta osaamisaluetta. Tänäkin vuonna nähdään Takashi Miiken uusin työ Big Bang Love, Juvenile A, jossa on teemana väkivaltaa ja poikien välisiä juttuja. Mitähän lienee. Ilmeisesti puhtaampaa perinteistä poikki-ja-pinoon-mätkimistä jatkaa thaimaalainen läpsimisperinne tällä kertaa kovasti suklaaseen viehtyneen naisen vinkkelistä
Ong-Bakeista tutun Prachya Pinkaewin elokuvassa Chocolate.

Japanilainen (ja taiwanilainen) pinku-pehmopornokomediagenre lienee tullut R&A:aan jäädäkseen. Japanilaiseen tapaan odottaa saattaa erinomaisen pimeää perverssiä viihdettä, josta vastaa tänä vuonna Shinji Imaoka kahdella elokuvallaan Tasogare - The Tender Throbbing Twilight ja Uncle's Paradise.

Ohjaaja Mark Hartley on koostanut meille australialaisesta B-viihteestä pläjäyksen Not Quite Hollywood. Koska olen jo valmiiksi joutunut/saanut etuoikeuden tutustua aussiviihteen joihinkin helmiin, tuo lienee asiallista yleissivistyksen jatkoa. Vaikuttaisi ainakin olevan aika paljon Bud Spencer/Terence Hill -tason junttikaahailua, joten mä luulen että yksi genrekooste on juuri sopiva rautaisannos tätä Australian lahjaa maailmalle.

Rexissä näytetään klo 21 päänäytöksenä jo viime vuoden parhaaksi leffaksi arvioimani oscar-ehdokas Lars And The Real Girl. Jos on näkemättä, ei kannata missata tätä!

  • Sticky & Sweet Tour Demos

    4 Sep 2008, 15:09 by trent1978

So, the new tour demos have already begun to appear on the net. I don't know what it is about these versions but I cannot get enough of them. I even want to listen to She's Not Me and I can't stand that song...yet this version, the music...?

And don't get me started on the new version of Vogue and that funky routine they do for the chorus - for me this version and the dance is better than re-invention, which I felt lacked "hit" in the dancing and was too soft to open the show. Yet, this time - Madonna is actually dancing and she's getting funky which really suits her.

  • Sticky & Sweet: Madonna, Cardiff Millenium Stadium, 23.08.08

    3 Sep 2008, 17:20 by FutureLove

I went to my seventh Madonna concert last Saturday night, the opening night of her Sticky & Sweet world tour in Cardiff. I’ve attended shows on the Drowned World, Reinvention and Confessions tours and, right now, it feels like she’s beaten all of them this time around. Time will tell whether that remains to be the case, but I wanted to distil my unexpected excitement into a little (!) review so that I could remember how good I felt immediately afterwards. Everything was a great big surprise as I’d not read any of the spoilers. I didn’t know anything about the stage, the setlist, the costumes…I’d only read enough to get me even more excited and she didn’t disappoint.

The stage was the first surprise. A vast tower framed by two enormous glittering Ms. Her own walking castle, it would appear. There was a catwalk jutting out into the golden circle, where I was lucky enough to be stood. There was a bizarre cube structure in the centre of the stage, apparently made out of the screens Madonna has grown so accustomed to using in her stage productions. Prior to the concert, I’d hoped that she wouldn’t rely so much on the screens. My hopes were dashed, but in a good way. They were used like a moving set – splitting, dividing, rotating, joining together. They were coupled with a wonderful two-tiered chandelier of light that descended on to the end of the catwalk. It could be her most complex stage set-up yet, with platforms that rose and fell at each side of the stage, coupled with a lifting and shifting circular structure at the end of the catwalk. It was like something out of the film “Dark City”, where the landscape morphs and changes at the whim of its creator.

I came away with the feeling that although, materially, the stage was nothing new, Madonna and her team had succeeded in doing something very new with it, bringing the show to the audience in a way that she’d not succeeded in doing before.

The costumes were a lot sexier than those on her last three tours but were also simpler: a smart Givenchy basque that looked incredible during the opening number, vest and short combos as Madonna and her gang put themselves through their paces, a beautiful gypsy-inspired mini-dress with thigh-high boots and coloured ribbons and finally a “warrior”-style outfit with silver breast-plate and huge shoulder pads.

In complete contrast with the tired, worn-out woman that the papers gleefully presented to us in recent weeks, Madonna looked fantastic. Long, platinum curls, toned and lean, smiling throughout and looking very fresh. I’m not going to fuel the debate of whether she has had surgery or not as it doesn’t really bother me either way. However, she was looking a damn sight younger than 50 without looking as if her head had been replaced. Vocally, there were some of the usual bum notes – she wouldn’t be Madonna without them – but for the most part she sounded terrific, especially on You Must Love Me.

Now for the big important subject: the setlist. It’s always a point of contention. I’ve already seen tons of comments about her repeating Ray of Light and La isla bonita again on this tour. There’s even a YouTube video put together by fans detailing what SHOULD have been the setlist. I haven’t watched it, the first 10 seconds were enough. At the end of the day, you can’t please everyone. Although it was a little bit of a letdown to see some songs again that she played in a similar way on her last tour, it didn’t detract from an amazing show. I actually think the balance was just right – we got a setlist of 19 songs (23 if you include videos/interludes), 10 of which were from records other than Hard Candy. Human Nature, Vogue, Into the Groove, Borderline, La isla bonita, You Must Love Me and Like a Prayer were all highlights, but that’s not to say that the newer material didn’t stand up as well. Candy Shop was a fantastic opener, Beat Goes On worked really well, Miles Away became a singalong anthem, Heartbeat had her moving up and down the catwalk like a puppet, She’s Not Me (one of the best of the night) had her assaulting her former selves, Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You was performed behind a curtain of lights atop a piano and Give It 2 Me was a fitting and spectacular closer.

Hard Candy isn’t my favourite Madonna album but there are a handful of songs on there that I adore. Many have complained that it doesn’t feel like a Madonna album but she’s only doing what she’s always done – working with producers to do something different to what she did before. Modern r’n’b is really not my cup of tea but there is enough on this record to keep me excited. The jibes that it’s a flop are hilarious – it’s the third biggest selling album this year so far and we’re almost three quarters through. Granted, 2.8 million copies to date makes it her lowest selling record but that, my friends, is a sign of the times.

Sticky & Sweet brought Hard Candy to life, giving the tracks a harder, more vital edge in a way that actually made me want to listen to the album again as a whole. Sure, I would have liked to have heard Open Your Heart and I was one of the people that groaned audibly when Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You started instead of Rain. However, I think that there was a good mix of the old and the new. Neither did the concert “sag” in the way that some of the Bedouins section of the Confessions tour did, for example.

All of the different elements of the show worked brilliantly. The music had much more of a live feel to it this time round rather than the hyper-sequenced sound of previous tours. The dancers – some old and new faces in there – were once again gravity-defyingly good. Some in particular were extremely easy on the eye (“Hello Christmas!”). The backing singers sounded great and could actually be seen this time around – where were they on the last tour, apart from during Lucky Star? The lighting and sound were spectacular…and I’ve already waxed lyrical about the screens.

I’m really lucky to have seen this tour on its opening night, without having any idea what she was going to sing or how it was going to look. Maybe that’s why it’s made such a massive impression. It was everything she’s ever done before and better: dramatic, light-hearted, heavy-handed, spectacular, minimal, innovative, self-indulgent, celebratory, exciting, relentless. Apparently, I wasn’t the only person there that enjoyed it either. Everyone was up for it in our section (the golden circle). Before the concert started, there were people chanting, clapping, trying to do Mexican waves – this is all round the stadium, which, by the way, was packed from where I was standing. The area behind the sound tower was a bit empty but otherwise all the seats looked full. Also, this “booing” that supposedly came about because she was late. Absolute rubbish! Any booing was because one section of the upper tier kept fucking up the Mexican wave – they repeatedly didn’t even bother to try! They deserved to be booed. Oh and I think a security guard may have confiscated the beach ball and the cushion that was flying around the golden circle, so he got booed as well.

No-one booed Madonna. She was too good.

P.S. The pictures aren't mine - they came from various websites, so if they're yours, I hope you don't mind me using them!
