It takes alot for me to admit that im wrong about something but lately ive had to shift my views on metal slightly. You see there was a time where i thought all metal was bollocks and just for sweaty dungeons and dragons cunts. However after sampling some sweet Metallica (only the early shit though......newer stuff is just boring) i have to admit it is amazing stuff. Hopefully theres at least one other metal band that i like out there to completley change my view point. Dont get me wrong i still think that death metal etc is just pathetic and the fans of said music can suck my nuts. Yes i can stand noisey music (aka the birthday party and napalm death) but what those bands do is just noise for the sake of it....theres nothing cool about that (and dont get me started on the upside down cross shite i mean who does that actually offend?).

In conclusion metal is pretty good.........but metalheads are still sacks

Pues me apetece dedicar un artículo Metallica con motivo de su nuevo álbum, Death Magnetic. El desgraciado de Bob Rock se ha ido al fin, y a la banda se le permite de nuevo componer sus canciones con total libertad. Esto ha resultado en dos cosas: primero, un regreso en toda regla a las raíces de Thrash de Metallica. Segundo, es su álbum más complejo y progresivo desde el legendario ...And Justice For All. Casi todas las canciones duran ocho minutos y tienen estructuras no convencionales, exceptuando Cyanide y My Apocalypse. Si además tenemos en cuenta que la muerte está presente desde el título del álbum hasta la oscura letra de casi todas las canciónes, tenemos el álbum de Metallica menos comercial desde 1988.

No es realmente necesario describir las canciones una a una; escuchadlo vosotros mismos. Ahora, a lo que de verdad quiero llegar: ¿Cómo es posible que cuatro hombres que ya están en los cuarenta hayan recuperado de repente el interés la música rápida y agresiva? Esa es la cuestión.

Si examinamos la historia de Metallica por álbums, empezando por Kill 'em All, nos daremos cuenta de que han madurado, por así decirlo. Kill 'em All era juvenil, marchoso, sonaba más a heavy metal clásico que a thrash. Las canciónes también tienen estructuras simples y riffs muy sencillos. Ride the Lightning trataba temas un poco más maduros, incluyendo preocupación por el estado del mundo (Fight Fire With Fire), Historia (Creeping Death) o suicidio (Fade to Black). Empezamos a ver cómo mejoran como músicos (The Call of Ktulu, una instrumental de 8 minutos).

Master of Puppets llega en 1986 con una estructura copiada de RTL y temas una vena diferente (frustración, drogas, carencia de control o guerra). Meses después del lanzamiento, el virtuoso Cliff Burton muere en un accidente, conmocionando al mundo del metal.

...And Justice for All es el más serio de sus álbums, tanto que casi resulta deprimente. Con estructuras más complejas y un ambiente oscuro, trata la contaminación (Blackened), la falta de justicia (...and Justice for All, Eye of the Beholder), guerra otra vez (One). Black Album/Metallica vio estructuras simplificadas, temas más personales y sonido más comercial. Aquí es donde se dice que se vendieron, pero tengamos en cuenta que Bob Rock tuvo mucho que ver con toda la presión que ejerció sobre ellos.

Y aquí es donde uno se pierde un poco. en 1996 se cortaron el pelo y sacaron Load (seguida por Reload en 1997). Estos álbums contienen canciones sencillas, al igual que Black Album, además de eliminar los últimos vestigios de thrash en su sonido. La cuestión es, ¿hicieron esto para vender más o simplemente porque estaban cansados del thrash? (o ambas cosas.) Y en caso de que lo hiciesen por el dinero, ¿fue por voluntad propia o por presión de Bob Rock?

Yo creo que la razón de que los fans se decepcionasen tanto con este cambio no sólo es el cambio de estilo en sí, sino el cambio de posición de la banda. En los 80, Metallica eran la alternativa a la música comercial, los reyes del underground, simbolizaban la juventud, la agresividad y la rebeldía. Trataban los problemas del mundo en sus canciones sin cortarse un pelo. En los noventa, simplifican su sonido y tratan temas personales, lo cual les hace salir del underground y convertirse en una banda para las masas. Yo creo que fue eso lo que realmente decepcionó a los fans.

En cuanto a mí, he de decir que Black Album y Load/Reload me parecen buenos álbums de rock/metal comercial, sólo que nada especial. Ahí está el problema -- RTL, MOP y AJFA son los mejores álbums de thrash metal, mientras que los nuevos son álbums decentes de otro género. Si Load/Reload hubiesen sido acojonantes álbums de Hard Rock me hubiese callado la boca, pero no lo son. Por supuesto que hay algunas canciones muy buenas, como Bleeding Me o The Outlaw Torn, pero la mayoría son genéricas y aburridas.

En el 2003 tenemos St. Anger, un álbum que la mayoría de la gente considera mierda. La ausencia de solos, el molesto sonido de la batería y la repetición que plaga todas las canciones son algunas de las razones por las cuales ni a ellos mismos les gustó el disco, y las canciones fueron desapareciendo de los setlist de los conciertos en la propia gira. Me gustaría reseñar adecuadamente este álbum, pero es demasiado molesto para escucharlo entero.

En el 2006, Bob Rock se va al fin. Metallica empiezan a trabajar en un nuevo álbum, señalando que tendrá un sonido que recordará a los viejos tiempos de Metallica, y viva Dios que eso es lo que han hecho. El 2 de septiembre de este año 2008, se comienzan a vender copias de Death Magnetic en una tienda de francia, haciendo el álbum accesible antes de la fecha señalada (12 de septiembre). Este álbum, como ya he comentado al principio, es similar al AJFA en la complejidad y progresividad. Se podría también considerar que es un álbum temático (el magnetismo de la muerte, como James dijo en una entrevista).

Ahora bien, ¿por qué han hecho este álbum, cómo han recuperado la fuerza? Lars Ulrich apenas puede tocar las canciones sin que le de un ataque de reuma, son hombres en los cuarenta y tantos. ¿Les habrá molestado ser llamados traidores durante más de 10 años? ¿Tal vez simplemente les apetecía volver a los viejos tiempos?

En fin, supongo que por mucho que se piense no se encontrará otra respuesta más que la que ellos mismos han dado, que querían volver a la esencia.

Y en cualquier caso, un fan del thrash metal como yo lo agradece.
