  • Moby's Last Night

    7 Apr 2008, 16:09 by astrolabe1976

Last Night by Moby is his open letter to the New York City dance music scene of the last 30 years: from disco, to hip hop, to house, to the rave scene he was so seminal in in the early 90s.
First of all its nice to hear Moby just letting down his non existent hair, and making some fun (if not disposable) dance music again, without trying so hard to be an arTISTE. This is more of a mood album...it works as an album in its entirety, rather than individual songs (other than the phenomenal PlayDisco Lies)

And even better, Moby decides its best he let other people sing on his albums again. Wise move Moby! (though you just couldnt resist on Alice I guess!)

This is thoroughly a Moby album inside and out, drawing on his own 18 years of music making. You could easily call this album "Everything Is Play" because it does seem to be a melding of of Play and Everything Is Wrong.
His old rave up piano tunes mix with his newer "found sample" technique.

Those classic Moby piano chords, string swells, his trademark bass and guitar playing. Its all here. And Unlike most "retro" album these days like say Confessions On A Dancefloor, Moby only need reference himself. Be proud of Moby for not jumping on to any dancetrend here... no pitch bendy D.Ramirez basslines.. no Booka Shade minimalism. He doesnt even bother to change the string sound on his synthesizer from song to song.

The album starts out nicely with a slow burn disco jam called PlayOoh Yeah with female vocalists that evoke both Blondie and Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby on the breakdown.

PlayI Love To Move In Here is another winner, with one of those Play/Everything Is Wrong hybrids I mention. Classic Moby house piano over a shuffling groove, with a sample of a woman singing "I Love To Move In Here" then a cool rap in the middle with that classic 90s house cliche "OH yeah OH yeah" in the background. A very moody, sexy track.

Play257.Zero is a slice of disposable 90s house fun that could have easily been on Mobility.

everyday its 1989, full of 909 drums, house piano and diva whaling will make you think Mobys own PlayMove or Everytime You Touch Me, but less effective.

PlayLive For Tomorrow and Alice are textbook post Play moby. The former female soulful sample over slow breakbeats and lush string chords, the later Alice, sounds like some sort of Moby/Cypress Hill jam session. Moby warbles some singing but tis so distorted and only the chorus, letting the rappers take most of the song

Im In Love is more 90s dance throwback, with an anonymous female singer which refrain sounds dangerously close to Strict Machine by Goldfrapp

PlayDisco Lies is the powerhouse of the album, and probably the best single he has put out since Play, and one of the best of his career. Funk disco, with a sassy diva spurning her lying lover, its great stuff.

PlayThe Stars is a rather disposable dance track that sounds like a Everything is Wrong B-Side

The album begins to go more into afterhours mode towards the end, with slow downtempo numbers like PlayDegenerates, and PlaySweet Apocalypse that harken back to his underrated Ambient album

You might say youve heard it all before, and you probably have, but its nice to see Moby have a little fun and give us his best single in years. Its predictable, yet solid.

  • Era, E.S. Posthumus and Moby's New Albums!

    1 Apr 2008, 17:30 by Richardgm

Oh yes, my #5 most played artist Era (2,934), #8 E.S. Posthumus (1954), and Moby, who now sits at #23 with 802 plays have all released new album recently, and I got a hold of them.

Firstly, I was ecstatic to learn (via E.S Posthumus' page on last.fm of course) that they released a new album (Cartographer) months ago! So I quickly downloaded, and got listening. First impressions? First CD with that lady singing is very unlike the E.S. I loved. Second CD was more like it, but to date only 4 songs I consider good. They are Oraanu Pi, Mosane Pi, Isunova Pi, and Raptamei Pi.

Fyi, E.S made it to my #1 spot for the week ending Mar 30, with 136 plays.

Era's album Reborn is slated for release soon is again another New Age album I think has too much pop influences. Previous Era works (Era and Era 2) were a great mix of dance, and Gregorian vocals, this release is more pop with a smaller dose of the above mentioned. The few favourites are PlaySinfoni deo, PlayReborn, PlayCome into my world, and finally PlayLast song.

Era placed 9th on last week's charts with 22 plays. No doubt there will be a greater showing on this week's charts.

Last, but certainly not least, Moby's Last Night (incidentally, it's official release is today Tuesday April 1) is, unlike the other albums, not a disappointing one.

I must say, that I love albums 18 and Play especially by Moby.

Let's run through the track listing, shall we?

    1. "PlayOoh Yeah" - 5:18

Nice start to the album. Not a favourite so far, but not a skipper. 3/5

    2. "PlayI Love To Move In Here" - 4:45

I love the fake audience, a technique Moby used in PlayI'm Not Worried At All, a favourite of mine. 4/5

    3."Play257.Zero" - 3:38
    Upbeat track, 4/5

    4. "PlayEveryday It's 1989" - 3:40
This is the track that stood out the first time I played it. It's damn good, lyrics? Something along the lines of "Everyday I got to go through (screaming)". It's damn good, and as I said in the track's shout-box here on last.fm, it's the Moby I love. I've played this song (according to Win-Amp 50 times, last.fm been stingy with the play updates, so we'll see soon enough the track's total). 5/5, you have to hear this song!

    5. "PlayLive For Tomorrow" - 4:02
Sang by a female (like previous track), this up-beat song actually has more lyrics through. 4/5. Good song.

    6. "PlayAlice" - 4:27
Was never a fan of this song. Just never grew on me. 3/5

    7. "PlayHyenas" - 3:35
Hotelesque, not my cup of tea. 3/5

    8. "PlayI'm In Love" - 3:43
Slightly better than the previous track. Starts off slow (in terms of quality, but gets better with time) 4/5

    9. "PlayDisco Lies" - 3:23
Good track, but personally I don't know why it's currently the highest charting new track for Moby on Last.fm. 4/5

    10. "PlayThe Stars" - 4:21
Another fake audience track. "Can you believe it?" 4/5

I'm not sure what's happening with the last couple of tracks. No lyrics, very ambient. I'll have to keep playing them to like them more. So for now they're kind of "bla"?

    11. "PlayDegenerates" - 3:58
    12. "PlaySweet Apocalypse" - 5:19
    13."PlayMothers Of The Night" - 3:19
    14. "PlayLast Night" - 4:53

  • Review: Moby - Last Night (from out-of-space.ch)

    14 Mar 2008, 10:04 by thegrid

Man merkt schon, dass er ein Kind der 90er Jahre ist, denn auch auf dem neuesten Werk "Last Night" des Ur-Ur-Grossneffen von Herman Melville (Moby Dick) Klingt die Musik von Richard Melville Hall a.k.a. Moby teilweise nach Love Parade und Rave-Hallen. Schon 2002 rappte Eminem in seinem Song "Without Me" polemisierend die Zeile "You don't know me, you're too old let go its over, nobody listens to techno" und warf Moby vor, veraltet und überholt zu sein. Aber stimmt denn das? Kocht Moby einfach die alten Hymnen wieder hoch?

Nun, dieses mal tut er dies scheinbar gewollt, denn auf seiner Website moby.com ist zu lesen:

"Last Night" is basically a love letter to dance music in new york city. What i love about the New York approach to dance music is the eclecticism and the open minded-ness on the part of the musicians, the dj's, and the people in the bars and clubs. In making 'Last Night' i essentially tried to take a long 8 hour night out in new york city and condense it into a 65 minute long album."

  • Moby - Disco Lies

    5 Mar 2008, 21:04 by astrolabe1976

WOW! Moby is making real dance music again with his new track PlayDisco Lies! He's not singing!(only whispering) Nor is he raiding Alan Lomaxes library for samples!

(well i guess PlayNew York, New York with Deborah Harry was the true beginning)

And its good! Not earth shattering, but a good solid tune. Welcome back Moby!
