Mott the Hoople formed when Silence, a not-too-successful group from the Welsh borders, was joined by session pianist and rock n roll hopeful Ian Hunter. They developed from Dylan obsessives to their own character over the course of four albums for Island. They were a very popular live act but only achieved brief commercial success. In 1971 the band was close to splitting up but continued to record “All the Young Dudes”, a song written for them by up and coming pop star and fan David Bowie. Three more albums and several pop hits later the band fell apart when Ian Hunter left in 1974. The remaining members created Mott which released two albums before disbanding in 1976. Original guitarist Mick Ralphs had greater success as member of Bad Company.

i genuinely LOVE these so-called one-hit-wonders. Because, in most cases, that ONE song is GREAT. And that's exactly the case here.

Bowie really did make this band. All the Young Dudes is probably the only reason they are still somewhat known.

The fact that there are so few listens to one of the best bands on the 70's is sinful! :|

some people hate on juno for being a false indie hit, but mostly they just hate that little teeney boppers are bopping around to the soundtrack when music freaks like myself have been listening (obsessing) to these songs and artists for a while. in actuality its nothing to hate but something to find hope in, the fact that so many people, mostly teens, loved the movie AND the soundtrack gives me the hope that maybe my generation isn't completely hopeless...if some 13 year old discovered the kinks or sonic youth, or mott the hoople because of that movie...yay!

Mott and The Hoople are definitely top albums for me. ATYD is good. The pre-glam stuff is fine, but a bit boring by comparison. And who said Ian Hunter sounds like Bowie? You need yer ears cleanin' out mate! "Violence! Violence! It's the only thing that will make you see sense!"

To be fair, there are some much better tracks than 'all the young dudes' that are not even in the charts
