Just about eight years to the day after I saw High Fidelity for the first time...

... I can finally say I have my own copy of The Three E.P.'s by The Beta Band.
I thought it was a great movie though all the music references went over my head.
Yeah, another second hand stores raid today. Other new acquisitions:
Gentlemen and 1965 by Afghan Whigs (AMG thinks they are an Interpol influence and favorably reviewed these albums)
Consolers Of The Lonely by The Raconteurs (popular with Supergrass fans at Amazon. And hey, they got Jack White, so how bad can it be? Oh, I did sneak a listen to samples at a Barnes and Noble, too. Glad to find it so quickly!)
The Black and White album by The Hives (also popular with Supergrass fans)
Let Love In by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ("I want to get Let Love In again, because that’s such a great record, a very great record." - Colin Greenwood)
Whip It On by The Raveonettes (I was looking out more specifically for Pretty in Black which I'd also sampled at a Barnes and Noble earlier)
Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees (recommended to me by both iTunes Store and Amazon, see earlier post)
Meat Is Murder by The Smiths (OK, I've been neglecting The Smiths... this one is NOT easy to come by in used stores and indeed I found it in the new arrivals bin)
Good Morning Spider by Sparklehorse ("We love them. Radiohead love Sparklehorse. We’ve dragged them from America to come on tour with us because we love them so much. We want to manage them. Make their t-shirts — ‘Radiohead Say Buy Sparklehorse Records’. Oooooh, no — You have to say the word ‘fuck’ in t-shirts now, don’t you? ‘Radiohead Say Fucking Buy Sparklehorse Records.'" - Colin Greenwood)
Life on Other Planets by Supergrass (I took a chance on In It for the Money last weekend... ("dope on plastic" - Colin Greenwood)... and liked it. What I'm really wanting now though is Road to Rouen which sounded great (in snippets) at that Barnes and Noble)
Oh, the Colin Greenwood quotes are from Part 2 of "How To Be Like Colin Greenwood". I like that site. :-) -

Ecleticism
27 Aug 2008, 17:24 by identitate
Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php
My eclectic score is currently
93/100

Song Lyrics: Create-a-poem
25 Aug 2008, 04:49 by margybee
Rules: Put your playlist on shuffle and write down the first 25 songs you get:
1. Radiohead -- Reckoner
2. The Doors -- Twentieth Century Fox
3. Steppenwolf -- Sookie, Sookie
4. Starsailor -- Born Again
5. The Smiths -- Some Girls are Bigger than Others
6. Ben Harper -- Waiting on an Angel
7. Muse -- Soldier's Poem
8. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds -- The Ship Song
9. Wilco -- Either Way
10. Ryan Adams -- How do you Keep Love Alive
11. Yellowcard -- Only One
12. Grateful Dead -- Dire Wolf
13. ABBA -- Chiquitita
14. Jim Croce -- I Got a Name
15. Alan Jackson -- Tall, Tall Trees
16. Belle and Sebastian -- If You're Feeling Sinister
17. Elvis Presley -- Just Because
18. Paul McCartney -- Little Willow

20. Steve Earle -- Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough)
21. My Bloody Valentine -- Come In Alone
22. Bruce Springsteen -- Girls in their Summer Clothes
23. Queen -- Seaside Rendezvous
24. Creed -- Higher
25. Pink Floyd -- Time
Now take the first line from the first song, the second line from the second song, third line from the third song, etc. and put them in order below to make your scrambled song. If the song doesn't have enough lines loop back to the beginning--like if you need the 22nd line but the song only has 15 lines, you start counting again with the first line as line 16 and end up using line 7.
Reckoner, you can't take it with you
And she's fashionably late
Sookie, sookie, sookie, sookie, sookie, sookie, sue
Oh it won't be long until we've found our home.
Some girls are bigger than others
Now angel won't you come by me
When you know damn well that this is wrong
Every time you come around.
Maybe you just need some time alone
Oh my soul
I let go, but there's just no one who gets me like you do
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me.
Chiquitita, you and I know
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud
If you wanna own a great ocean
The vicar, or whatever, took her to one side and gave her confirmation.
And now, now you say we are through
Ah, Willow
In your warm hand
Well, gettin' tough, just my luck.
Over her
In the cool of the evening light
Reminiscing every night
Come on, let's go there...
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day.
Really a strange idea. I can't say it worked very well, but it was interesting and maybe not a complete waste of time. =) -
5 albums for september.

What listen to in september:
Co warto posłuchać we wrześniu, dwujęzycznie z popisem.
1. Breaking Water (2:27), 2. Night of a Thousand Furry Toys (4:24), 3. Hidden Fear (3:27), 4. Runaway (3:58), 5. Unfair Ground(2:22), 6. Satellite (4:07), 7. Woman of Custom (3:43)8. Interlude (1:16), 9. Black Cloud (3:21), 10. Far from the Harbour Wall (6:08), 11. Drowning (1:37), 12. Reaching for the Rail (6:29), 13. Blue room in Venice (2:48), 14. Sweet July (4:13), 15. Along the Shoreline (4:36), 16. Night of a Thousand Furry Toys chociażby, czy duet z Sinéad O'Connor w Reaching for the Rail. No i oczywiście zakończenie całego albumu Breakthrough tym razem z samym wokalem irlandzkiej piosenkarki. I diabli wiedzą dlaczego.
Well, there is not much to say about Rick Wright's last (at this moment) solo project. Not much, because album of this ex-Floyd member is simply brilliant. Yes it is, brilliant. Wright made something coherent musically with unique atmosphere. Something similiar to the best Pink Floyd's achievments. It's very hard to point worst fragments of this recording. Well I doubt if there are any of that on "Broken China"! In replacement, brilliant parts are visible very, very clear - "Night of a Thousand Furry Toys" for example. Or duet with Sinéad O'Connor on "Reaching for the Rail". And of course ending of album - "Breakthrough" only with vocal of irish singer. Something simple perfect. All album is worth to listen even if you've heard it already several times. And who haven't heard it should be ashamed. Well, if I would be completing list of top albums of my life (or something similiar crap) I would put Broken China on it. But I really don't know on which place. Too bad this album is very underrated and only devil knows why.
1. Song of Joy (6:47), 2. Stagger Lee (5:15), 3. Henry Lee (3:58), 4. Lovely Creature (4:13), 5. Where the Wild Roses Grow (3:57), 6. The Curse of Millhaven (6:55), 7. The Kindness of Strangers (4:39), 8. Crow Jane (4:14), 9. O'Malley's Bar (14:28), 10. Death Is Not the End (4:27) Nie, nie znam twórczości Nicka Cave’a i zespołu The Bad Seeds. Coś żem tam słyszał jeno jednym uchem ówdzie i tamdzież. Lecz ogólnie pozostawałem z dala od utworów Australijczyka. Ostatnio jednak w wyniku dziwnych zbiegów okoliczności postanowiłem bliżej się przyjrzeć jednemu z ichnich albumów. Głównie ze względu chyba największego (przynajmniej jeżeli chodzi o mass-media) przeboju Nicka Cave’a – „Where the Wild Roses Grow”. Świetny utwór rozpoczynający – „Song of Joy”, świetne zakończenie w postaci covera utworu Boba Dylana – „Death is not the End”, świetny hitowy kawałek w duecie z Kylie Minogue – „Where the Wild Roses Grow”.
I don't know whole Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' discography. I only heard with one ear something here and something there. But in all I stayed out of recordings of this strange australian man. In consequences of strange coincedences under a lot of weird circumstances I wanted to examine one of their albums. I choosed "Murder Ballads" and main reason was their best commercial hit on it - "Where the Wild Roses Grow". I admit, that I was expecting something good about this album. And I was right in my unjustificated anticipations. This recording is about murder, it's obvious. But it's not all, 'cause this recording is about very good murder. We have great beginning track - "Song of Joy", great ending cover of Bob Dylan's song - "Death is not the End" and hit, great middle section track - "Where the Wild Roses Grow" in duet with Kylie Minogue. And beyond that, there are other no less pleasing songs - long " O'Malley's Bar" or "Henry Lee" with vocal of PJ Harvey. Rest is just good. If I can say it in that way. And characteristic voice of Nick Cave is an joy for ear and other ear too. 'Cause listening with two ears is nicer.
1. Meissa (8:08), 2. Lyra (7:45), 3. Tarazed (5:03), 4. Lupus (5:09), 5. Ankaa (7:01), 6. Altair (5:11), 7. Terebellum (9:40)Robert Fripp znany z King Crimson i pionier ambientu Brian Eno w latach siedemdziesiątych postanowili zagrać w duecie. No i co? Ano udało się. Osiągnęli pełen sukces, "Equatorial Stars" się spodobało. Przynajmniej mnie. I dzięki bogom! "Equatorial Stars" naprawdę może stanowić ciekawy i odprężający podkład muzyczny do czego by tam człowiek tylko nie zapragnął robić. Melodie są płynne, klimatyczne i intrygujące. I w dodatku uczą astronomii. Cóż chcieć więcej?
In seventies Robert Fripp known from King Crimson and ambient pionier [atrist]Brian Eno[/atrist] decided to play in duet. And together they recorded album "No Pussyfooting", which nobody is able to listen to. But it was a milestone for Brian's further ambient works. After that, these two gentelmans recorded "Evening Star" that was more accessible for human ear. After that certain succes their duet ended. Thirty years have passed until they reminded to theirself that they know each other. So, they meet and recorded next album. Well, they succed again. And even much more this time! I liked their new "Equatorial Stars"! Fripp and Eno's today's ambient is not the same ambient that was in 1973. Thank gods! "Equatorial Stars" is really intresting and chilling music background for every task that man could ever wanted to do. Melodies are fluen and intriguing. And in addition they teach astronomy. What man could want more?
1. Can't Get My Motor to Start (3:39), 2. I Was Wrong (4:12), 3. Siam (4:48), 4. Hot River (5:16), 5. Boo To You Too (3:26), 6. Do Ya (4:36), 7. Wervin' (3:58), 8. Niewiele, zupełnie niewiele brakowało a byłyby cztery gwiazdeczki. Nu, ale brakło i są tylko trzy. Może innym razem, Nick.
Nick Mason's Fictitious Sport's suprised me in a positive way. I didn't expected that Mason's solo album will be so good. But, as can you see, I was wrong and well, his first album is indeed enjoyable. Nick Mason is not singing himself, but his friends substitute him with a very positive effect. Tracks like "Hot River", "I'm a Mineralist" or "Boo To You Too" are great and memorable, and the other songs on this album are at least decent. Whole Fictitious Sport's is indeed good and musicaly embed rather in seventies than eighties, what was very good for that album. Well, Mason was really close to four stars, just a little. So it is still only three stars. Too bad for Nick.
1. The Eve of the War (9:06), 2. Horsell Common and the Heat Ray (11:36), 3. The Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine (10:36), 4. Forever Autumn (7:43), 5. Thunder Child (6:10), 6. The Red Weed (Part 1) (5:55), 7. The Spirit of Man – 11:45, 8. The Red Weed (Part 2) (6:51), 9. Brave New World (12:13), 10. Dead London (8:37), 11. Epilogue (Part 1) (2:42), 12. No cóż, czasem i tak bywa.
I shouldn't write here nothing but fiveteen cheerfull emoticons. 'Cause musical version of the War of the Worlds is already classic. And those who didn't listen to it should be ashamed. Ninety minutes of just brilliant music - great adaptation of great story in great preformance. With certanity this rock opera will be giving lots of money to Jeff Wayne for next two hundred years. Or even five hundred years, if Jeff will rerelase abridged version of his masterwork. Not suprising, 'cause this is just superb. With no useless sound, perfect choosed singers (with Justin Hayward from The Moody Blues) and etcetera, etcetera... I'll say only, that I was lack of stars when I was judging Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. Well, sometimes it happens.
A oto czego we wrześniu nie słuchać:
And now what Not listen to in september:
1. Logos, Part One (25:41), 2. Logos, Part Two (19:28), 3. Dominion (5:45)
Rzecz straszna. Niestety.
Terrible thing. I want to have nothing to do with this album. Not a little. Tangerine Dream in worst edition. It sounds like things that Froese is doing to the band now. But, for Gods!, on Logos there is Christopher Franke and Johannes Schmoelling too! So why such terrible creature crawled from the deep of hell?! All record is awful, sounds are wretched, melody annoying and looks like composed by hedgehog splashed on street by roller. During this London concert improvisations playd by TD just failed. There is no difference between first, fifteenth or thirtysixth minute of this recording. It sounds identical through all fifty minutes! Bleh. Throw out, destroy, desintegrate and lock on ninety ninth level under Moon's surface. Very strange, 'cause next albums ("Hyperborea" for example) are listenable. Without exaggeration I can say, that Logos Live is the sign of coming end of Tangerine Dream. Unfortunately. -

After I couldn't find three cds (I Am Kloot, Islands, the Verve,...) of my collection I started the most chilling thing possible...sorting your lp/cd collection...and I wrote em down (mainly the cds) in some kind of inventory.

This Is A Weeping Song; Or; This Is A Journal About Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld
21 Aug 2008, 19:18 by GoMental
Hello. The title pretty much says anything. I'd also like to add that there's youtube videos, chainsaw music, enthusiasm, pictures, and uh death. Quite a lot too.
Let's get started, shall we? Yes....
The entire thing started about 1 1/2 year ago, when I looked at a friend's father's vinyl and my attention drifted towards a picture (on a cover, duh) of a fascinating young men.
(Picture below: fascinating young men)

Bu-ut the thing that really got things rolling was the name of this guy's guitarist. Not only did he look fantastically fucked-up beautiful, no, his name was BLIXA BARGELD. In caps, because even then I realized that a man called Blixa Bargeld (amazingness + awesomeness + alliteration) could not but deserve my unconditional love and admiration. I was oh so right.
(Pictured below: Blixa rocking his "everything in my mouth is rotten and my nose has direct access to the brain"-look. Pretty cool, huh?)
So, anyway, I was into him. He was the only reason I ever picked up that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds rarities collection from the library, also the only reason I read Verschwende Deine Jugend (Germany's Please Kill Me, except more boring. But it had Blixa, so, fair deal). Yeah, the rarities collection. It's flawed, but it has some excellent ballads on it, an intense acoustic version of that good ol' electric-chair-song
The Mercy Seat, a version of Where The Wild Roses Go with Blixa singing the Elisa-part, and above all, one of Nick's best songs,
