DEAR P DIDDY...
29 Sep 2008, 06:03 by GOTNOTIME4BS
Dear Puff Daddy aka Sean Combs aka P. Diddy aka Diddy aka PUFFY aka whatever you’re calling yourself today,
I know our relationship has been difficult recently, to say the least. At first your Bad Boy label put out the classic one-two punch of Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die and Craig Mack’s Project: Funk Da World (one of the most slept on hip hop releases of the 90’s). Of course you needed to get the ladies in on things, so I understood when you started signing R&B acts. At least you were putting out artists like Faith Evans and 112 whose early material blended classic soul with hip hop hooks.
Then B.I.G. got shot, you released his mind blowing last record Life After Death, and Bad Boy went to shit. You signed Murder Mase, put the dude in a shinny suit, and reinvented him as a pop rapper. You fulfilled the dreams of everyone (named Sean Combs at least) and put out your own middling records. You put out one L.O.X record and then held the band hostage in contract disputes. You signed generic gangster rappers like Black Rob, Gorilla Zoe and Loon to the house that Biggy built. Oh yeah… and Making the Band. Need I say more?
But it all makes sense now. The blatant pandering to mindless pop radio and rap stereotypes were just a ruse so one day you could start releasing mind bending albums from artists like Janelle Monáe. Once the protégé of Outkast’s Andre 3000 Janelle’s debut Metropolis: The Chase Suite is sure to be the only R&B album this year to include references to chainsaws, electro daggers, cyborgs, alien bounty hunters, along with tales of cousins selling dope to get by. Somewhere between The Wire, Blade Runner, and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Janelle serves up space age weirdness and soulful emotion without ever sounding as if she’s straining to make things different for the sake of being different. Pro-tooled Opera vocals? Sure why not! Foot stomping funk? You bet! Billie Holiday meets OutKast jams? Fuck yes!
My nightmare is that this artist is going to go the way of so many of your previous finds Puff, a worry made all the more troubling by the realization that very few of your recent signings have made it to a second album. Yet, at the same time I can’t imagine this EP not being a massive hit, especially if you can get just a few radio stations to play “Many Moons” which might be the most perfect slice of soul pop to drop since “Hey Ya.” Janelle has it all on Metropollis; she’s got more vocal range than all the members of Danity Kane combined, a unique lyrical and musical direction, and a former co-sign from Andre 3000. Shit Puff, I bought this record with my own money and I’m reviewing it on a website where people send me records to write about. Don’t shit the bed here man. If you play your cards right you might just have the new Outkast and the new Lauryn Hill. Just keep her the hell away from shinny suits and don’t interfere if one of her ideas seems too weird one day.
Janelle Monáe matters, and she hasn’t even released a full length yet. I’ll do my part and let music fans know this exists, you just make sure she puts out a long player as soon as possible.
9 out of 10
RIYL: Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Outkast, Billie Holiday, Philip K.. Dick, or Prince.

What's better for procrastination than a music survey?
26 Sep 2008, 21:08 by greeneyed_ives
I'm trying to find any reason not to work on my final portfolio for grad school...
1. How did you get into 29? Belle and Sebastian
My best friend put them on a mix CD for me. Its been love ever since.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? Ben Folds
Probably "Rockin' the Suburbs" but I had been listening to Ben Folds Five for years before he went solo.
3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? David Mead
"Well sweet baby Jesus is watching you
From his bed at the big corner church
And he knows the highs that you took me to
'Cause he knows the way that it hurts"
- from "Queensboro Bridge" off Indiana
4. How did you get into 49? Modern Skirts
I went to a show because the guy I liked was going to be there. The Skirts were the opening act. The boy is now gone, but the Skirts remain.
5. How many albums by 13 do you own? Jack Johnson
Two, plus a couple of random songs here and there.
6. What is your favorite song by 50? Foo Fighters
"Everlong" because I have so many memories attached to it.
7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? of Montreal
No, for that would kind of defeat the purpose of their music...
8. What is your favorite song by 15? Jump
If I exclude everything they did when they went by the name Jump, Little Children, then it would have to be "Mexico" (even if that is horribly cliche).
9. What is your favorite song by 5? Sufjan Stevens
"Casimir Pulaski Day" because that song is so heart breaking. When I saw him two years ago, I burst into tears when he started playing it. So embarrassing...
10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? Stars
I love all of their music, but "The First Five Times" always makes me smile.
11. What is the worst song by 40? OutKast
I'm not a huge fan of "Movin' Cool (The After Party)."
12. What is your favorite song by 10? Ben Folds Five
Oh geeze, that's almost impossible to answer since there are so many good ones. I'll say "Kate," but ask me tomorrow and it will probably be something totally different.
13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds
Hearing "Sister" for the first time, which was this insanely cathartic moment for me.
14. What is your favorite song by 38? TV on the Radio
Tie between "Wolf Like Me' and "I Was a Lover"
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? Paul Simon
How about all of it? If I had to pick a specific song though, "Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes."
16. Is there a song by 25 that makes you sad? Jason Mraz
"A Beautiful Mess"
17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? Eve 6
"Inside Out" though they have much, much better songs than that...
18. What's your favorite lyric by 11? Rilo Kiley
It changes every day but right now it's:
"Here’s to all the pretty words we will never speak
Here’s to all the pretty girls you're gonna meet"
- from "Breakin' Up" off Under the Blacklight
19. Who is a favorite member of 1? Jump, Little Children
I was always a Matt Bivins girl. I mean, how could you not be? The man is comparable to sex on stage...
20. Is there a song by 14 that makes you happy? Girl Talk
You can't really pick one specific song because of how his albums are formatted, but who doesn't love it when he puts Biggie over Elton John?
21. What is a good memory involving 27? Justin Timberlake
My roommate's 23rd birthday party. Good night.
22. What is your favorite song by 16? The Rolling Stones
"You Can't Always Get What You Want"
23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? Ted Leo and The Pharmacists
I can't really remember honestly. Possibly "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?"
24. What is your favorite album by 18? The Beatles
Rubber Soul because it's the first music I ever remember hearing. The absolute first.
25. What is your favorite song by 21? The Smashing Pumpkins
"Perfect" even though I could do without Adore as a whole...
26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? Nickel Creek
"The Lighthouses Tale" which is incredibly sad.
27. What is your favorite album by 3? John Mayer
Gotta throw it back to his original demo, Inside Wants Out.
28. What is you favorite song by 2? Guster
"Either Way" which is a shame because I've never heard it live even though I've seen them a couple of times.
29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? Common Rotation
The first time I ever heard them was when they opened for David Mead. So whatever song they opened with I guess.
30. What is you favorite song by 8? Third Eye Blind
"I Want You" because.. well, just because.
31. How many times have you seen 17 live? The Brilliant Inventions
Three or four times? I wish they would leave the city of Atlanta a bit more.
32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? U2
"Sunday, Bloody Sunday" even though that is the exact opposite feeling U2 probably intended...
33. How did you get into 13? Jack Johnson
I really liked the song "Bubbletoes" when I heard it on the radio.
34. What is the worst song by 45? Michael Flynn
The Bonus Track on No Disassemble cause what's the point?
35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? Rosebud
"Changing of the Guard" at a solo Jay Clifford show.
36. What is the first song you ever heard by 48? The Shins
"Caring is Creepy"
37. How many times have you seen 35 live? Gorillaz
None cause well, it's a cartoon band.
38. What is you favorite song by 36? The Go! Team
"Friendship Update"
39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? Broken Social Scene
"7/4 (Shoreline)" which is an amazing song.
40. What is you favorite album by 7? Kanye West
Late Registration. It's a shame he's such an asshole, cause his music is so good...
41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? Neutral Milk Hotel
"Kind of the Carrot Flowers Pt. One"
42. What is your favorite album by 41? Death Cab for Cutie
Plans
43. What is your favorite song by 24? Blackalicious
"Makes You Feel Tha Way" which is just a flat out, makes you feel good song
44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? Something Corporate
Not a good memory exactly, but more of a good lesson. I had tickets to see them my freshman year, the night before an important Comp Lit final. I gave the tickets away. My roommate went, had an amazing time, and met the band. I stayed in my dorm room to study, still did poorly on the exam, and made a C in the class. Lesson learned: Good music is always more important than class. Always.
45. What is your favorite song by 42? Ishues
"Game Time" though pretty much everything he does is good. I wish more people knew about him.
46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? Dave Matthews Band
I like alot of their stuff, but I suppose "Trippin' Billies" is always a good party song.
47. What is your favorite album by 4? Andrew Bird
The Mysterious Production of Eggs
48. Who is a favorite member of 37? Incubus
Brandon Boyd. Yum.
49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? Rufus Wainwright
"Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk" thanks again to my best friend.
50. What is your favorite song by 20? Bain Mattox
"Thorn" which is just such a great song. -

15 Sep 2008, 21:14 by hecger
First Single "Womanizer" Is Slated To Hit Radio On September 22nd
Jive/Zomba recording artist Britney Spears announces her sixth studio album, Circus, set for release December 2nd. The first single from the album is titled "Womanizer" and was produced by the up-and-coming Atlanta production team The Outsyders. The album release date coincides with Spears' birthday.
On the heels of an MTV VMA awards sweep, where Britney walked away with three Moonmen awards for "Video of the Year," "Best Female" and "Best Pop Video" for "
Piece Of Me," Jive Records is preparing her latest album, Circus, a follow-up to her critically well received album, Blackout. For her latest effort, Britney has enlisted a stellar group of established producers/writers that include Dr. Luke (who wrote and produced the album's title track, "Circus"), Danja, Max Martin, Bloodshy & Avant and Guy Sigsworth (Madonna, Alanis Morissette, Björk).
Britney Spears is one of the top-selling artists of the last decade, and to date, she has sold in excess of 62 million albums worldwide that include Baby One More Time (1999), Oops!...I Did It Again (2000), Britney (2001), In the Zone (2003), and Blackout (2007), eight #1 worldwide singles and four consecutive #1 albums.
The Zomba Label Group consists of record labels Jive, LaFace, Volcano, Verity, GospoCentric and Fo Yo Soul. These labels represent a varied group of artists including Justin Timberlake, R. Kelly, Usher, Tool, Ciara, Chris Brown, P!nk, Britney Spears, OutKast, Kirk Franklin, Three Days Grace, 311, Nick Lachey, T-Pain, Byron Cage, Bullet for My Valentine, Buddy Guy, Living Things, Anthony Hamilton, Donnie McClurkin, John P. The Dirty Thirty: 30,000 Tracks Played
7 Sep 2008, 23:58 by MrModernRock
25,000 track journal
20,000 track journal
15,000 track journal
10,000 track journal
5,000 track journal
I passed the 30,000 tracks mark last week, but really haven't had time to dedicate time to create a journal on the subject until now.
It has taken me a year to move from 25K to 30K, mainly due to the 6 month break I took from the site starting last November and ending this past Spring. With school starting up again, its hard to make time to visit the site and chat with all the cool people and write up journals. The fact that recommended reading is still down and the reply tracker is broken (though I'm happy there is one now) makes doing journals even harder and not worth the work/time.
Musically speaking, lately and similar to my previous journal, I've been into more roots-rock, blues, and country than anything else. I attribute this to my History of Rock course, which has been very interesting so far and provided me with more albums/artists to add to my wishlist.
I have recently seen John Fogerty and B.B. King and both were fantastic, though B.B.'s show was one of the best I have ever seen.
TOP TEN SHOWCASE
Top Ten After 30,000 Listens
10) OutKast - 494 Plays (New to the Top 10!)
With Big Boi's debut solo album looming over the horizon for release this Fall, I've started pumping myself up by going through their discography and revisiting old favorites. I recently had Aquemini bumping in my car for a week or so and it seems like everytime I bang that shit, it just gets better and better and that's the reason why its my favorite 'Kast album. Not to mention there are some classic verses and bombs being dropped all over the damn place. The boys also become the first hip-hop artist to make its way into my top-ten and for good reason because they are definitely my favorite hip-hop duo.
9) The Beatles - 502 Plays (Remains at #9)
I think I've said this in all of my (insert track number here) tracks played journals, but while I love Abbey Road, the boys from Liverpool are not a band I would really ever include in my personal top ten. I'm not disappointed they're here, though, because they put out some class-A stuff in their day. I haven't really listened to them in a long time, either and I was half-expecting them to drop a spot to Outkast, which looks like it may still very well happen very soon.
8) Queens of the Stone Age - 587 Plays (Remains at #8)
I haven't listened to these guys in a very long time and once I finally put all my cds back onto my new HDD, I'll try to go through their discography from beginning to end. Era Vulgaris remains a vastly under appreciated gem around it, though, since I haven't run into too many people with glowing remarks about it. Josh and co. remain on my "must-see-bands" list as they haven't come close to my home, yet. After I see DBT on the 20th, QotSA should be at the top of that list.
7) Brendan Benson - 595 Plays (Down 2 positions from #5)
I haven't listened to much Benson stuff - well solo stuff. I guess the latest The Raconteurs' album is more a Jack White special than the split-down-the-middle Broken Boy Soldiers. Regardless, Benson's contributions to Consolers of the Lonely are my favorites anyway and I cannot wait for his next solo album. Hopefully it comes in 2009.
6) Pearl Jam - 626 Plays (Down 3 positions from #3)
As far as Pearl Jam goes, they're in the same boat as The Beatles. They're a great band, I like them a lot, but I would probably never include them in my personal top ten. Then again Ten is one of my favorite albums ever, so I'm not going to get my panties in a twist since PJ are in my top ten. Although I've seen them live already, I want to see them again. My seats sucked when I saw them, so I didn't really "see" them and the reverberations at the top of the arena washed out the audio. Still, I liked the show and want to see them play again whenever they come up my way. By my 30,000 track journal, I expect Pearl Jam to be out of the top five.
Seems like that prediction came true.
5) Creedence Clearwater Revival - 674 Plays (Up 2 positions from #7)
With the news that the first six CCR albums are to be remastered and reissued I will probably continue to spin these guys for quite some time. Now, the John Fogerty-CCR era homer that I am, I will most definitely replace the CDs of the albums that I currently own. Its about time that their discography is treated well because CCR is a band that is underestimated due to the apparent simplicity of their songs. Plus, John Fogerty's vocals are the personification of worn-out, road-traveling rocker - and he still kills it 40 years later (see above).
4) Neko Case - 699 Plays (Remains at #4)
I recently picked up Neko's debut solo album The Virginian and again fell in love with her vocals. The album is a slight departure from her two most recent albums Fox Confessor Brings the Flood and Blacklisted in that The Virginian is a more casual, relaxed and generally upbeat listen compared to the other two which are more serious and darker. All of them, however, are great albums and the fact that she's working on a new album is fantastic news. I can't wait for more Neko!
3) Drive-By Truckers - 737 Plays (Up 3 positions from #6)
DBT have jumped up a considerable bit since the 25,000 track journal. Since then, they've released Brighter Than Creation's Dark which is potentially their second or third best album they have ever released and definitely makes for the lacklust A Blessing and A Curse. Jason Isbell's departure isn
