  • I've been mooned

    6 Aug 2008, 09:48 by Tuokku

About a month ago a group called Moses Hazy played Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon live at a club in Oulu. While not my favourite Floyd album (that title must go to Wish You Were Here), it's still a great album and I wanted to go check out the show. However, I hadn't started my summer vacation yet, and on the night of the gig I was so tired that I decided to skip it. The following day at work I met a coworker who had seen it and thought it had been the best thing ever. As you might expect, I was more than a little bit annoyed at myself for not going.

Fortunately, sometimes you do get a second chance: a month later, last night, they did a reprise. This time, being on holiday, I didn't have a single reason not to go, and I even got a couple of friends to join me. By the time the last one of them arrived it was getting pretty crowded in the ground-floor bar; apparently word had got around that it was a great show. Or maybe it's just that there are so many Floyd fans in this city, I don't know. In any event, it was a relief when they finally allowed us upstairs where the stage is.

I was curious about whether the band was going to reproduce the album as performed by Floyd or whether they had created their own arrangements of the songs. It turned out to be a faithful version, and I must say they had the original sound pretty thoroughly nailed: the instrumentation, the vocal harmonies, the analog synth weirdness of On the Run, everything. They didn't try to replicate the solos, a wise decision in my opinion - not that I doubt their abilities, I just think it would have been a rather pointless exercise.

Remarkably, they didn't just get the big picture right but also held their own against the devil in the details. A regular electric guitar played with a slide stood in for David Gilmour's lap steel in Breathe, and the drummer used a pair of bongo drums to emulate Nick Mason's battery of rototoms in the intro to Time. The two female singers who shared the lead vocal in The Great Gig in the Sky had just the sort of powerful voices that the song calls for. In Any Colour You Like the main singer did that Gilmour routine where he scats in falsetto while playing the same notes on the guitar, and in Brain Damage the sax player inserted fits of maniacal laughter into his horn mic.

In a nutshell: probably the next best thing to seeing the album performed live by Pink Floyd. I'm itching to get involved in a project like that myself. Damn you guys for being so freakin' cool!

Sun 11 May – Roger Waters

De show start met In The Flesh?.

Naast The Wall worden ook andere bekende albums als (onvermijdbaar) Wish You Were Here, Amused to Death en Animals gespeeld. The Dark Side of the Moon!

Geweldig! “We don’t need no education!”, laat me niet lachen... The Great Gig in the Sky.

Sun 11 May – Roger Waters

Finally I got to see Roger Waters “in the flesh”. And it was a great day and performance! The weather was beautiful and around 4:30 PM we arrived at the entrance of Megaland. There were already people waiting in front of the gate, but not as much as I expected. Around 5:15 PM the gates opened and we were walking towards the stage. We had great places! Just about 5 rows in front of us and we were facing the backing singers. We spend some time drinking, eating and talking with all the people around us. Around 8:15 we had some movement on the stage and it started!

I’m not going to mention everything but here are some highlights for me:
Mother: Sylvia Mason-James did a great performance of the ‘Mother’ part but she looked so tensed and stressed about it. I wonder where that came from.
The Fletcher Memorial Home: Roger was really in his element this one of his best songs.
Perfect Sense: a stunning solo by PP Arnold. Really awesome.
Sheep: one of my favourites and it was great. The pig flew around and at the end it (again) had a lift off.
On The Run: absolutely brilliant. I always thought that On The Run was the dullest song on Dark Side. But this vversion was awesome. The quadrophonic sound was great ion this song.
Us And Them: was done nicely by Jon Carin. I really liked the spots during the chorus . It was giving the song a much stronger effect.
Eclipse: is a great finisher. But I think something went wrong . I guess Roger sang the wrong lines and the girls didn’t follow him. So it was a bit of mess at the end, but eventually they all ended with the same line: “and the sun is eclipsed by the moon”. And the prism shone his light around the field. Brilliant!
Bring The Boys Back Home: great explosions on the stage, we could feel the air pressure everytime one exploded.

All in all, a great concert, the quadraphonic effect did his job perfectly and the band seemed to be in a good mood. Even Snowy White walked around the stage and chatted with his fellow musicians.

  • The Australian Pink Floyd Show Review 11.30.07 - [Finished!]

    1 Dec 2007, 21:05 by Torenkownage

Fri 30 Nov – The Australian Pink Floyd Show. Where do I begin? First off, the place was packed. I was almost surprised there were so many people there to see a tribute band. I was with my 25 year old brother. Me and him have always fought a lot, like most brothers, I'd imagine. But lately we've been a little closer. I was originally going to go to this concert with my mom, but I decided to go with my brother, since me and my mom saw Roger Waters in May.

Soon after the first song, "Breathe" kicked in, I found out why the place was packed: They're basically Pink Floyd! If you closed your eyes, you'd have no clue it wasn't the real thing. After "Breathe" came "On the Run" with some cool visuals on the screen as expected. I think Roger did this track better though, visually and otherwise. At the end was the big crash, which then segued into the loud clocks of "Time". This song was another dead-on replication, but even better in some parts. The guitarist (the tall bald one, sorry I don't know his name) was on fire. So was the shorter, not-bald one. The vocals were really well done.

Now comes the highlight of the first set: "The Great Gig in the Sky". The two ladies on backing vocals blew the roof off. I've never heard such beautiful voices in my life. Better than Roger (and his girls') rendition by a bit. Roger's girls' were amazing, and I think they did a very great job doing this song, but the Australian Pink Floyd's two white ladies (not that race matters, just saying) were even better! They both got a standing ovation afterwards, and rightfully so. The rest of "The Dark Side..." went on without a hitch, with everything being spot-on perfect; better in some parts. "Money" was just as good as when I heard Roger do it in May. Also, during Any Colour You Like, the singer/shorter guitarist did some voices with his mouth while playing. Kind of like Gilmour does on WYWH, except louder and faster? I dunno how to explain it.

They got a two minute standing ovation/screamvation after the set ended. We finally gave the keyboardist a moment to speak and tell us to go get a beer or two. I, of course, didn't, but it was neat that he supported drinking! o_o

The second set... this is where it gets good (gooder).
It opened with the familiar flute(?) thingy from Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V). The little "DOO DOO DA DOO" was perfect, better than when Mr. Kilminster did it. I swear, I've never heard a better guitarist live. This guy rivals David Gilmour. I am speaking about the bald guy. I really have no idea who was playing what. But when that bald guy was playing, he was fucking killing it. (That's a good thing) They played the song perfectly. Saxophone and everything. The vocals were REALLY good. This is where I lose track of what song came after what.

They played "Learning to Fly" which was amazing, especially thanks to the drummer. He's very talented. The guitar solos were dead on. "Take It Back" was then played. I can't describe how dead on perfect they were during this whole concert. They played songs better than Pink Floyd has ever played them!

Then came "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun". To be honest, I can't stand the original version of this song. It's really boring to me. But this version... BLEW ME THE FUCK AWAY! The saxophonist was killing it, and then I was like "well that's great!", and then the tall bald guitarist got in on the fun, too! He was playing his ass off, you could tell he was feeling it. I was feeling it too, it was amazing! I wish the studio version was this good!

Next up was "Nobody Home", which featured the singer slouched down in a chair next to a lamp, just like in the "The Wall" movie (during "Comfortably Numb"). I was so surprised to hear this song, and even more surprised to see them kind of acting it out on stage! I'm surprised the singer could sing so well slouching like that! A truly amazing performance of that song.

Then came another unexpected song... "Pigs (Three Different Ones)". I'm not the biggest fan of this one either, but boy did I love it when they did it. I couldn't help but sing along. The light show was great (as it was on ALL of the songs), and the familiar Battersea Power Station was seen on the screen. And then, a bit into the song, out from the side of the stage comes... THE PIG! Now this is a small place, so this thing didn't come out and float around, but it did pop out, to my surprise, and seemed to bob it's head. The eyes lit up when the lights were dark, and then they seemed to look like puppydog eyes towards the end of the song. It looked like it might of been one of the pigs from Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" tour, not sure, though.

Then was Wish You Were Here, I believe. I don't remember a lot of this song, other than it being spot on. I was recording it on camera for my mom, and whenever I record something, I usually don't remember it. The lights were very pretty (sorry for sounding gay), and the singer did the waah waah waah with his voice just like Gilmour does.

Next up was the TOTALLY UNEXPECTED "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX)", although leaving out the last two parts. When this started, I almost shit my pants. I listened to this song in the car on the way there, and said "nah, there's no way they'll play this at the concert. It's never played", and then THEY PLAYED IT! And it was BEAUTIFUL! Definitely my favorite part of the "Shine On" suite. The lap steel (I think there's some in that song) was done SO AMAZINGLY. My love for TAPFS went through the roof once they did this song.

Once that was done, and my face was completely blown off, I heard something familiar. That little "BRUN DUN DUN DUN... BREENG... BRUN DUN DUN DUN DUN..." cue One of These Days. I'm not the biggest fan of this studio version, I'll admit. But if they could make me enjoy Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, I knew I'd love this. When the song started, I noticed something on stage, blowing up. I thought it would be something dumb, BUT IT WAS A GIANT FUCKING KANGAROO! And when they got around the banging of the drums that preceeds "One of these days...", the lights flashed and you could see the kangaroo's face, showing his grimacing... grin? Either way, that was bad ass. But then once they got into the jam part after the lyrics, THE KANGAROO STARTED JUMPING UP AND DOWN TO THE BEAT! I was blown away! Not to mention the non-bald guy FUCKING BROKE IT DOWN on the lap steel. I mean your man was having at it. Holy shit. WOO!

Then came the overly-expected PlayThe Happiest Days of Our Lives, followed by Another Brick In The Wall (Part II). I'll admit, these were very well-done, vocally. And of course, musically. I basically hate Another Brick in the Wall (Part II), but once again, I enjoyed this. Then after a 92 minute (or something) applause, they introduced the band. I have shitty hearing, so I made out maybe three names. None of which I remember now. Then they announced they'd be playing their last song of the night; Comfortably Numb.

The singer (obviously) sounded better than Roger does (or has) on this song in the last eight years. He sounded so good. And the guy singing Gilmour's parts sounded almost exactly like him! Now onto the first solo... DEAD ON as expected. Just perfect. The second solo... I almost flew out of my seat. The guitarists are SO GOOD. They played this much better than Kilminster/White did at Roger's concert in May. Not to take away ANYTHING from those two brilliant guitarists, but these guys blew the roof off. It's going to cost a lot to repair it, I'd imagine. I mean, they REALLY did an ass-kicking solo. An ass-BEATING solo. An ass-VAPORIZING solo. It was like the original on steroids! Not as good as I've heard Gilmour do, BUT SO CLOSE! It was at least four minutes long, probably five. The very end where they all just go crazy was, well, crazy! But a good crazy! An amazing crazy! Superb crazy!

Then, it was over... my brother got up to leave, and so did a bit of other people, but I stood there, screaming and clapping. The lights went off, and my brother urged me to come on so we wouldn't be stuck in the rush of people. But I knew better. I knew they wouldn't leave us hanging. I stood there screaming "ONE MORE SONG!" for about two minutes, along with the rest of the audience clapping and screaming, and sure enough the lights flickered.

I could just barely see someone coming back to the stage, and there they were, back to play us another song. "da da da deen da da da da deen da da da". If you can't interpret my shitty written-translation of the song, it's Hey You! I was pretty surprised to hear this, too! Again, I can't say it enough, the vocals were spot-on just like every song. They really pay tribute to Pink Floyd. I wish I wasn't so dumb, because I really can't differentiate keyboards from bass from lap steel, but the part where it's like "WAAH wuh WAAH WAAH, WAAH wuh WAAH WAAH, WAAH wuh WAAH WAAH" was KICK ASS! I mean, it felt like somebody took their steel-toed boot and kicked me in the ass! But it felt so good!

Then the lights went out again, and we weren't done screaming. I wasn't, at least. Not by a long shot. My brother again tried to get us to leave. "Fuck that", said I.

I heard the familiar scratching thing Gilmour did in '94 (did he do it before then?). The lights went crazy for a few seconds as this happened, then stopped. Repeat about five more times, then cue bassist (I believe) repeating almost the exact same words Roger did during the 1980 tours. "Is there anybody here who's weak? Are there any weak people in the audience? Are there any paranoids in the audience? Well this one's for you, it's called Run Like Hell... come on, ENJOY YOURSELVES! HAVE A GOOD TIME! CLAP! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!". Everyone was on their feet clapping, myself included. I honestly think my brother was the only one who sat down during this whole song (poor bloke, bet he couldn't see a thing). This was another one of those songs where the guitarists really shined. They were so kick ass. The light show was probably at it's peak on this song. Or maybe it wasn't, I can't fucking remember. Curse you, 16 year old brain.

Anyways, after they had rocked my socks off (I couldn't find them afterwards), I was afraid that it was over... we then walked out of the room. But I ran back in, just holding out hope for one more song (I'm greedy). No such luck. So I then made my sad, but very happy walk out of the building. Still stunned at how good it was, comparisons to the Roger concert in May just kept running though my head. I'm so glad I saw these Australian blokes, they're spectacular.

Folks, this was the best concert I've EVER seen, and probably ever will see. Even if this was only the second concert I've ever seen, the first one was Roger Waters earlier this year, and I believe this show was better. Not WAY BETTER!!!!!!11, but it was better. Maybe because I wasn't so far from the stage? Maybe because there weren't two drunk 20-something's talking DURING THE ENTIRE FUCKING CONCERT? Either way, I feel this was more impressive than Roger's concert (but his was still AMAZING!).

If you're having any doubts, may those be completely erased now: The Australian Pink Floyd are the real deal! See them if/while you can! You will NOT be disappointed in the slightest. =]

Thank you, Australian Pink Floyd, for giving me the best night of my life. Thank you for playing amazing songs, and thank you for playing them in their entire amazingness (even better in some cases). Thank you for giving me three hours (or two?) to completely forget about my problems and my life, and just focus on the great music of Pink Floyd. I will never forget it. Thank you.

P.S.: I wasn't high. You don't need to be high to enjoy this!
