Top 20 Albums: Sort of!
29 Aug 2008, 06:28 by Gowienczyk
Please note the following entry is just my favorite top 20 albums (as of 8/29), rather than best musical pieces ever made. Although skill does contribute to placement in this journal. Especially the first 5 or so. Anyway these journals are hard as I always get new ideas. Haha, Enjoy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Doolittle by the Pixies
Alternative Rock
One of the most influential albums in the past three decades, Doolittle shows the clear great songwriting of the Pixies. It's a emotional mess and I adore it, honestly. I guess I have a thing for calm to aggressive transitions in my music. Either way, most will agree with this being a great album. Definitely the Pixies' most catchy. Between "Wave of Mutilation" and "Here Comes Your Man" there is a apparent musical range, and the creativity of Kim Deal always comes through. This, I think is what makes the Pixies so easy to listen to: the basslines. Sure the tasty light distortion with layered acoustic guitar, as well as the loud percussion are clear good traits, but alas the bassline just gets to you. This is my favorite album of all-time and I think this won't change anytime soon.
2. Deathconsciousness by the Have A Nice Life
Post-Shoegaze
One of the most artistic album of this decade. This album is so depressing and wallowing. You myswell go out and kill yourself. The inspiration being a unique combonation of drone, shoegaze, ambient and post-punk. This album truly transcends shoegaze (which you can see the album mostly rooted in) and goes to the next level. It's not post-rock, but it myswell be. The tag makes sense. With tracks ranging from "Who Would Leave Their Son Out In The Sun" and "Waiting For Black Metal Records To Come In The Mail". The album was also unique in it's own debut release. A giant 'book' if you could say talking about the album. It truly showed artistic creativity in it's fullest. If you do not own this album... you simply are not a fan of art.
3. Three Sides Dead by Funeral Diner
Screamo
Funeral Diner was a great band from the emo-violence scene throughout the two last decades who are perhaps the most known amongst emotive hardcore fans and even some metalheads who ventured into the genre. Having such qualities as the ability to go from quaint melody to chaotic aggression in a technical composing perfection. This is clearly seen in the 2003 release of Three Sides Dead. The strongest track to me being "We Don't Belong In Concrete" which starts with such tranquil guitar notes in a light tempo before the build-up of such raw chaos and what seems to me to be raw emotion. This chaos goes on for the whole song once built inward until the abrupt but perfect ending. Most can say the other tracks are just as comparable. Indeed. Personally, this album for me has no filler and makes the top 10 for good reason. This is a music collection essential.
4. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Shoegaze
It's a very much overhyped album, that's for sure. But is Loveless truly overated? or is that just the general consensus due to the hipster love for this album and it's band. A revolutionary and awe-inspiring album filled with drenched noise with melodic pop perfection. What could be better than noise pop, anyway? The tempo doesn't have to change to show the change with the beautiful drenched delay. How one could say that this is anything but a musicial masterpiece is just odd. Even upon hearing the single, "Only Shallow" you can hear and feel the perfection. If you don't... well I'm sorry for your soul.
5. Transitions by Arts the Beatdoctor
Jazz-influenced Hip-Hop
Brilliant. So.... brilliant. This transcended my idea of hip-hop upon my first listen. The egnimatic bass flows so... interestingly well in the compositional arrangements of this hip-hop material by Arts the Beatdoctor. With songs like "Crazy Times (feat. Skiggy Rapz)" and "The Anthem (feat. Pete Philly)" you will be immeditally absorbed into the music. This is accurate especially if you are one of those (like me) who are drawn into powerful and beautiful basslines. The only reason people will not call this a pinacle of art is if they are narrow-minded to hip-hop and narrow-minded to the point. Anyway, before I rant. You NEED this album. I am not kidding.
6. Conduct by Fuck
Rock
From their REM beggings, Fuck has gone a long way. This later album from Fuck shows what some believe to be their peak. With such intense songs like "The Thing" and creative masterpeices like "Monkey Doll" you see it as a consistent album with great arrangements and instrumentation. Fuck has always been known to mix vague 60s pop influences with their love of 1980s college rock. If you aren't amazed by this brilliance then you simply aren't going fucking anywhere.
7. Bellybutton by Jellyfish
Power Pop
Take the Beatles and throw them in a pot with some Kansas and Squeeze with a pinch of the Beach Boys and what do you have? You have Jellyfish and the album that defined them: Bellybutton. Known for the single "The King is Half Undressed" in 1992 you could already tell with the melody, harmony, and just overall catchy music Jellyfish were entailing in that song you were into something really good. Not only was that good, Andy Sturmer showed you he could really write a song. The lyrics in "The Man I Used to Be" were always so touching. Really showing great lyricsm. This album is timeless and should be experienced.
8. The Empire Strikes First by the Bad Religion
Punk Rock
The main reason why this holds so much significance to my taste in favorite albums is due to this being a really evident album I listened to in High School. Oddly enough it has not gotten old at fucking all. "Sinister Rouge" is still powerful and such a rush. It's just so well arranged for a punk rock album. WIth the well-known single, "Los Angeles Is Burning" just as powerful... I really feel drawn to the album and it just isn't some album love from my younger days. Sure, I loved them when I was 16 and I still do.
9. Maladroit by the Weezer
Rock
No, it's not Pinkerton. But it is their release that is the best arranged, composed and produced. Good arrangement and consistency is something Pinkerton did not have. Pinkerton overused the "feedback" effect and was completely off the wall. But maybe that's why people like it. EIther way on to Maladroit, personally I do see it as Weezers best album musicially due to several elements I listed before. From "American Gigolo" to "Love Explosion" you feel a rush of musicial excellence. The pop hooks are still there but it isn't dominant unlike some of their other albums. If you don't think this is a good album, I just don't know what to say.
10. Combinations by Eisley
Rock
Upon the former release of Room Noises, one could see that Combinations is a matured continuation of Eisley's style. The composition being less dry and more well off. With the single "Invasion" you can hear the definite change from the last album. But the reason why Combinations is so high on my list is a combination of the band's great melody, harmony, and light distortion. I think I'm a sucker for perfectly done light distortion, really. It's one of my favorite elements in music and this album gives me it. Released in 2007 this clearly shows how good the modern music scene is shaping up.
11. Wiretap Scars by Sparta
Rock
Forming from the ashes of At the Drive-In, Sparta takes a different direction than the members of The Mars Volta. Seemingly Wiretap Scars seems like a general rock album, but the elements of their love of post-hardcore are ever so present. Sure, Sparta may not involve the best melodic vocals or screams in the world but they definitely have it down better than some other bands in their genre. A band to have such a quality as to go from quiet and beautiful to loud and chaotic and done well is a trait not many bands seemingly have. Personally, I think Wiretap Scars shows Sparta is a part of that consensus. Songs like "Air" show this very much well. It's definitely worth a listen, and personally I find these guys more interesting than The Mars Volta.
12. Carnavas by Silversun Pickups
Shoegaze
What happens when you mix the Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, and the Apples of Stereo? You'd think 'something I don't want to hear', but really the Silversun Pickups deliver a unique and original sound that will make you interested. Especially with the vocals of Brian Aubert, albeit unique to shoegaze but yet not. As melodic pop-esque vocals have always been attributed to such music. If that doesn't get you, the driving hypnotic bass and aggressive cymbal-heavy percussion will. Trust me, this band has it set for the indie hipster crowd. Either way, pick up this album and decide for yourself if they are worth your time. For me, I can't stop listening to it.
13. Wake Pig by 3
Progressive Rock
Eppard is a genius of progressive music and he doesn't need to overdue it to prove it. His urban progressive look in the early 90s was clear and evolved throughout the years. His folk playing often intertwining with this band. Come 2005 and the release of Wake Pig hits idle ears and those who hear the such lovely songs of "Bramfatura" and other such pieces would experience something entirely new to them. Eppards unique style of playing and his ideals for the band is flawless in Wake Pig. One of my favorite albums of all time for good reason, I assure you. Between the folk-meets-progressive rock feel or the melodic perfection of Eppard's vocals it's just... right.
14. Odyssey Number Five by Powderfinger
Rock
Between a great cover like "Number of the Beast" and the single "My Kind of Scene", Odyssey Number Five delivers with bass-centered rock music. Light distortion, melodic vocals and seemingily slow yet steady percussion. It's a rock classic. Released in 2001, this definitally is one of the decades best albums. The album has little-to-no filler and is a great listen, hell, even a great addition to your collection. You should grab the album, maybe you'll like it as I did.
15. Good News For People Who Love Bad News by Modest Mouse
Alternative Rock
I don't know which album indie hipsters shun. This or Death Cab for Cutie's Plans. Given that, this album is great: and a well-rounded piece of work for the transition between The Moon & Antarctica and We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, which I don't think have as much substance as this album. The album starts with "White Lies Yellow Teeth" and it is great. As you listen to the album, the single "Float On" just doesn't do the album justice as Modest Mouse are so random it's nuts. You have their folk leanings, their Built to Spill leanings and their Pixies leanings... and really this album balances all of that. Between the obnoxious vocals you have a music classic. This might not have as much consitency as The Moon & Antarctica but damn I love Modest Mouse and I think this will always be my favorite album from them.
16. High Society by Enon
Rock
Pretty unique as far as rock bands go. Sure it's not extremely unique like Xiu Xiu or something, but it's something off from say Goo Goo Dolls or something. From "Window Display" and "Salty" you can notice a definite change. While "Window Display" seemingly could easily be played on a indie rock radio station, "Salty" is completely different... aggressive and experimental. Also, two members switch lead vocal duties often from song to song so it's always something different. High Society is brilliant and a pretty damn rock album for what it does. Variation, mood swings, and two vocalists. I don't see that a lot.
17. Unit by Regurgitator
Experimental Rock
Not experimental in the league of Faith No More or the Residents or Xiu Xiu.... but Regurgitator definitely made something here. You can hear blends of gibberish, electronica, funk-rock, electropop, alternative pop, hard rock, and yes... hip-hop. They definitely make something for everyone and the 1997 release of Unit definitely shows the good stuff can come from Australia. If you were a 90s kid then you probably remember the albums single, "Black Bugs" which portrayed a cheesy 3D video jokingly referencing satan and video games with amusing lyrics and beautiful imagery. But for me the best track between this cult classic is probably "Modern Life" for the bassline purely. I'm not sure but I enjoy hearing it. Personally I think they are timeless and believe there is a reason they still make music.
18. Survival Sickness by The (International) Noise Conspiracy
Rock
When I think The (International) Noise Conspiracy, I personally think of the amazing bassline in "Smash It Up" which feels of a thundering raw rhythym. in addition to this, Dennis Lyxzén's vocals are significantly different to Refused, which was his last band at the point when he formed The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Showing a interesting melody with his voice, this rock band was set. Survivial Sickness has in addition to Dennis' voice and the thundering bass: a seemingly quaint guitar tone most of the time not coming in right away in comparison to many rock bands. Letting the bass lead the song and not just provide the basis of the rhythym, all layered with the simplistic percussion that follows the bass. The band is very creative and this album definitely proves that claim. Amazing stuff.
19. Dear Friend Dopamine by Where's Moo
Alternative Rock
If the Pixies and REM ever played a gig together, it might just sound like Where's Moo. With possessive basslines, light distortion layered over a build-up of the heavy percussion and brilliant songwriting, Dear Friend Dopamine shows a style of class. I honestly can see these guys touring with REM in the future. The music is great and their marketing ideas just make the album more accessible and easy to promote. Between the REM-like male vocals and the very Kim Deal-esque backing vocals you are left wanting more... and with only two albums, it kinda sucks. Haha. Dear Friend Dopamine is definitively a great album either way. Pick it up.
20. Nimrod by Green Day
Pop-influenced Rock
It was either this or Warning, because compared to these two... Dookie and American Idiot just don't compare either. Green Day shows their growth as a band in their arrangements, energy and creativity. The overall blunt songwriting is a plus as Nimrod hits you right in the face. When you go from "Nice Guys Finish Last" to the song that made them a household name, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" you will see the album was produced & arranged brilliantly. Wether or not you liek Green Day, if you look at it in this light you will see it. The bass is extremely powerful on this album, but it's been better. With songs like "Hitchin' A Ride" (inspired by the Stray Cats' hit "Stray Cat Strut") you can really see how Mike really isn't all too bad at all. I love the album from start to finish and I suppose putting it here makes sense as I have been overlistening to it to shit as of late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well that should be it. Cheers. -

My top twenty absolutely indispensable records.
23 Aug 2008, 20:37 by OuiTisRoz
It has already been a year since I made my list of the top ten records I simply could not exist without. And now, the following August, the time has some to give an updated version. This time, you may have already noticed that I cheated a little, and in fact made a TOP TWENTY. Well, okay. It might have also come to your attention - if you are avid enough a stalker - that some of my favourite artists are missing; Eels, Death Cab for Cutie, Regina Spektor, and David Bowie, for example. I would love to have them in my list, but... I just can't choose which album I like best. So - andiamo!
(P.S. This is in ascending order. The tension rises, therefore, as you get closer and closer to the end. Who will be the lucky winner?)
20. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (2008 in Europe)
An album I've owned for a month, if anything, making my top twenty? Pull the other one! But really, from the first time, this blew me away. Call it psychedelic electro glam indie, call it what you want, es ist mir egal... all I know is that it's fantastic, and it's the soundtrack to my summer 2008.
19. Röyksopp - Melody A.M (2001)
Despite its name, I find this must always be listened to at night. Put this on, and imagine you are in a wooden cabin in the fjords of Norway. This chilled-out album inspires me.
18. Elliott Smith - XO (1998)
Again, a relatively new candidate. It took some listens to get me to realise that this indeed is music that understands what our deepest woes would sound like if they had a voice and fingers. Melancholy, yet.. comforting and soft.
17. Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine (2004)
I maintain that it is a physical impossibility to listen to this while sitting stationary. I can't explain it. It is something you have to experience for yourself. It may scare you. But above all, it will amaze you with its proof that heavy noise can be tuneful and clever.
16. Feist - Let It Die (2004)
People who are cynical at the omnipresence of the 2007 single "1,2,3,4" should listen to this. I must say it is some of the most beautiful, sensual, autumnal-night music I have heard. Feist's (who I discovered through Broken Social Scene) voice carries very well, as does the emotion she puts into it at times, and her lyrics are great. The genres here vary from lounge jazz to disco. Very nice.
15. Muse - Origin of Symmetry (2001)
Bit of an oldie (in my terms) but still great. Of course, everyone knows what Muse sound like, don't they? Some actually argue this album is weak in comparison with later ones, but I think it is mighty. You only need to check out "Citizen Erased" (my all-time favourite Muse song) and "Megalomania" to confirm this.
14. Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds (2006)
After you've finished LOLing at the title, focus on the fine talent of Owen Pallett. He has imagination, and a gift for, well, fantasy story-telling; something lacking in almost all artists of the present day. And he is a pleasing violinist. This could be from personal experience, but: it is essential to take this with a fruit tea.
13. Metric – Live It Out (2005)
A fundamental component of my Canadian-music-obsession. This album just has one great song after another, each growing on you, and Emily Haines has a sexy voice. Enjoy.
12. The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)
My first `Lips album, and a firm favourite even before I heard the others. It takes you to another world, to outer space, to Japan… you can forget all the neuroses in your day-to-day life. “Do You Realize??” alone would more than suffice, if you were only allowed to listen to one song in your whole life.
11. Hole – Live Through This (1994)
The fact that this album got me through dark years in my life makes it already a classic. Getting me through it in that it added more darkness, curiously. Yes, it is Courtney Love; but she is a damn good songwriter. I think this is a case where it is impossible to explain what it means to you, because nobody will really understand.
10. Maxïmo Park – Our Earthly Pleasures (2007)
Isn’t the second album of an indie band always meant to be more commercialised? Geared towards a wider market? With Maxïmo, this seems to be the opposite case. The first effort was full of catchy pop hooks, with only the slightest smidgeon of seriousness, shown in songs like “Acrobat”. But this album here, for me, establishes Paul Smith’s place as a great modern poet. The lyrics could happily just be read on their own; each word has been chosen with great care. And the result is romantic – yet at the same time, so very true to life.
9. Jeff Buckley – Grace (1994)
Aural beauty. Sweet pain. A lost talent. Alright, maybe I will never be employed as a film tagline-writer, but the divinity of this album escapes words.
8. The Doors – The Doors (1967)
This played a big part in childhood memories – for example, journeys to my grandpa’s would not be complete without “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)”, and I have come to the decision that I will have “The Crystal Ship” played at my funeral, for its exquisiteness. The sound is just great – it radiates summer evenings. It makes me feel a little sad, too.
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers – By The Way (2002)
It could be argued that this was the first album that made me like decent music. My love of RHCP has continued throughout the years, and I have that mentality wherein I really don’t care what anyone says about them. This softer, more melodic sound, that was found on the preceding “Californication”, is here, but enhanced in so many ways. Reminds me of beautiful sunsets, the end of childgood and the beginning of youth.
6. The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead (1984)
Morrissey was, and still is, a great poet. I can see why in the 1980s, this was a great relief – pop music, but not stopping the lyrics being meaningful; full of humour, irony, and misery. The reason I put this on top of The Smiths’ other records is because initially I found this the most accessible. I then moved onto the astounding “Meat is Murder”.
5. The Divine Comedy – Promenade (1994)
A wonderful story of a perfect day, told in charming strings, piano, and of course Neil Hannon’s voice; with many literary and cinematic references. This is music to live your life to, and to dream about.
4. The Dears – No Cities Left (2003)
Canadian music, with Morrisseyesque vocals; and, if pushed, able to fall under the wide category of “dark pop”. When I listen to this, the sound makes me think of being alone by the sea, the wind in my hair, and a storm brewing. This album really focuses on the human emotions. It dramatises and exaggerates, the little things which break people’s hearts each day.
3. The Postal Service – Give Up (2003)
Wonderful electro-pop which seems to fit any situation – happy or sad – and any time of the year. The lyrics seem to focus on city life and teen relationships, and are never short of breathtaking. These can range from “I'll be the fire escape / that's bolted to the ancient brick / where you will sit and contemplate your day” to “I was waiting for a cross-town train in the London underground / when it struck me / that I've been waiting since birth to find a love that would look and sound / like a movie”. An investment into being overwhelmed.
2. Pixies – Doolittle (1989)
Nonsensical lyrics. Vocals varying from squawky to falsetto. Surfy guitar. Dreams of the Pacific (even though the Pixies are actually from Massachussetts). All this makes the other record that got me through my dark years. If Hole’s “Live Through This” was adding insult to injury, this was the light at the end of the tunnel.
1. Arcade Fire – Funeral (2004)
THIS MUSIC IS THE SONIC EQUIVALENT OF A SUNNY AFTERNOON WANDERING THROUGH A GARDEN OF ROSES, FOLLOWED BY AN EVENING BY THE FIRE WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE. Let it do what it wants to you. Let it steal your soul – because they were probably siblings who were separated at the dawn of time, anyway. -
