Polvo are a math rock group hailing from the town of chapel hill, nc. They have been widely noted for their skilled performance and sophisticated composition techniques, in addition to the wide variety of world, rock, and avant-garde influences the band has incorporated.
Polvo was formed in 1990, disbanded in 1998, and reunited in 2007. In their most productive years they recorded on Merge Records and Touch And Go Records. “Today’s Active Lifestyles” is considered to be one of their most definitive and finest works. They are self-professed sardine fans.

After rocking Today's Active Lifestyles, Polvo is definitely a new favorite and I would say they're a great mixture between Unwound but without the "too much Molly, not enough Prozac" that some of their works (sans Fake Train) can leave. I've yet to hit the rest of their albums so far but they definitely sneak in some of that great "sludge" groups like Karp are just kick-ass for.

When i dont listen to music for a couple of days, intentionally, then 'Twenty White Tents' or 'Lantern' seem to appear from nowhere in my head. Shapes is their weakest overall album, and I dont really want a Downtown Dedication, but these two pieces of music mentioned above definately push the envelope out, write all over it, and leave a sound hanging around to settle in the air long afterwards.. i love Polvo.

they sound a lot like roxette, but great nonetheless

Polvo was definitively summed up 15+ years ago by a clipped cartoon tacked on the wall of our Chapel Hill college radio station: A family tree depicts the history of rock and roll, beginning with "Europe" and "Africa," joining to create the rag, blues, jazz, rockabilly, and and so on, spreading and splintering into all the permutations of rock and dance music, until some 20 or 30 strains remained, representing the precisely distinct styles of the day. All 30 styles then converged to "Michelob." A genius added "Turkish music" next to "Michelob," which together yielded "Polvo."

mintybees: That's so true it hurts, Polvo actually renders a lot of my favorite bands/artists pretty much useless. Therefore I hope I'll forget about Polvo in a couple of months so I can re-explore them later, when I've digested all the "mediocre" artists. ;)

Any lad or lass who puts pick to string should bow their head in reverence for Ash's effortlessly cool guitar signature sound. After giving Polvo's songs some rotation most bands sound sufficatley dull and nausatley boring.

Not to take away from the music, but they are/were some extremely attractive-looking fellows.

These Polvo shows have blown me away, it's like Improv Jazz Math Rock, or Improv Jazz Un-Math Un-Post-Rock Un-Classifiable Music, of Polvo standards - every song sounded like evolved versions of their classic recordings. This "tour" NEEDS a live release. NEEDS it.

New album seems like it's going to happen! (Going by this interview Ash Bowie did for Pitchfork a while back.) And IMO, Archers Of Loaf are more similar to Polvo than Thinking Fellers Union Local #282, although they're all great bands.
