If you were to judge Psychedelic Horseshit on name alone, the response would be equally obnoxious and endearing, repulsive and magnetic. But the moniker, created in a last-minute attempt to place guitarist Matt Whitehurst’s then-fictional band into the line-up of a Delaware County hippie fest in September 2005, is a more than apt descriptor for what they do.

The trio, rounded out by bassist Jason Roxas and drummer Rich Johnston, satisfy themselves with a brand of “practice rock” that can’t be duplicated with multiple takes or fine-tuning. It’s an in-the-moment dynamic that can be mistaken for simply messing about, but it reveals a host of hidden intricacies and an even sharper wit with repeated listens.

Don’t think the songs are off-the-cuff improvisations, either. There’s a definite force at work, and as the band’s catalog of crunchy pop grows, their older material drifts into a permanent past tense.

“It’s easy for us to get bored with things,” says Whitehurst. “We come from the ADD generation and things get old quick. If a song is over three minutes long, it better be fucking amazing.”

As a result, their modest, homemade CD-R releases, King Tubby’s Baddness Dub, Sings the Anti-Concept and Blown Speaker Standards, come cased in stapled paper, are emblazoned with rough collages and last about as long as it takes to smoke a cigarette—disposable yet undeniably essential.
