From The Mob to Queensrÿche (early 1980s)
The foundations for Queensrÿche began in the early 1980s. Guitarist Michael Wilton and drummer Scott Rockenfield were members of a band called Cross+Fire, who covered songs from popular heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Before long Cross+Fire added guitarist Chris DeGarmo and bassist Eddie Jackson to their lineup, and changed their name to The Mob. The Mob, who were without a singer, recruited Geoff Tate to sing for them at a local rock festival. At the time, Tate was already in a band called Babylon. After Babylon broke up Tate performed a few shows with The Mob, but left because he was not interested in performing heavy metal.[1]
In 1981, The Mob put together sufficient funds to record a demo tape. Once again, Tate was enlisted to help. The group recorded four songs - “Queen of the Reich,” “Nightrider,” “Blinded” and “The Lady Wore Black.” The group brought their demo to various labels and were rejected by all of them. Tate also was still committed to staying in his then-current band, Myth.[1]

Oh I meant their 80s stuff sounds 80s, which is understandable, not everything. I mean from the EP to Empire (which wasn't quite 80s but just a couple of years in it). It's the same with a lot of bands 80s material, like Judas Priest. There's definitely something in the drums, and just... vibe. I'm really looking forward to the new QR album, and curious as to how it will sound. I don't doubt that they can sound modern without compromising their sound.

I love Queensryche and think Rush is pretty good. As for Queensryche being stuck in the 80's I don't find that to be true to much. OMC2 may have been leaned more towards the 80's but albums like Hear in the Now, Tribe and Q2K show more of an experimental side that I loved a lot. But I still love all there albums so I guess it doesn't matter really.

After getting hold of the new-ish covers record (mostly out of interest of finding a harder version of The Police's Synchronicity II), I've found that I like these guys. I'll be getting hold of Operation Mindcrime ASAP... By the way, I also like Rush. So, for those of you wno mention "QR or Rush but not both," I'm your counterexample.

arshes2005, what makes you think that? I'm a huge fan of Rush and love Queensryche. I always thought QR was a bit like Iron Maiden-meets-Rush (with a bit of Pink Floyd thrown in), at least on the classic stuff. Empire is very obviously influenced by Rush's 80s albums, they even used the same producer and engineers (Peter Collins, James Barton, Paul Northfield) that worked on Power Windows and Hold Your Fire by Rush. I guess some Rush fans might find QR too metal, but I think there's some overlap between their fanbases.

Like both :) I'm listening to Rush more at the moment, they sound less tied to a decade. Like a lot of Queensryche's stuff sounds distinctly 80s, a lot of Rush's stuff sound distinctly 70s too but... well I prefer the 70s sound. :P Overall I'd say I've loved Queensryche a lot more though. I'm not sure why the comparison was drawn though.

Have you ever noticed that ppl usually like either Queensryche or Rush, but not both? There are a few that go for both, but not many I've seen... I'm a QR fan, myself.
