  • The Best Of The 80's

    27 Sep 2008, 07:14 by FatherLucifer

Some months ago I was in a hotel room... Boyfriend was sleeping, I wasn't tired at all. A TV set, a remote and me flicking through the channels until Jack Black and his School of Rock showed up. At first I thought it would be a waste of time, but gave it a shot anyway. My first impression was correct after all, but a scene of the movie was particularly remarkable: Jack Black playing a Stevie Nicks song in a jukebox. I'd known Fleetwood Mac for years then, but I had never heard any of their solo material. The song just stuck in my head, thou' the only quote of the lyrics I could recall later was "seventeen". Went to a CD store, took a Stevie Nicks' Greatest Hits album and there it was: Edge of Seventeen. The damn song was so fucking good I had to download it as soon as getting home. As I heard it over 100 times (you can check that here at last.fm), it actually changed my perspective on the 80's. I used to think it was a decade to regret and be ashamed of, at least when it came to music. But the fierceness of the vocals of a cocain-addicted Miss Stevie Nicks, the repetitive and provocative guitar base-pattern, the sudden beats of the drums, the whole frantic atmosphere of it made me realize I was missing ten years of musical possibilities there. I started paying more attention to any material I already had from that time and started digging out some more, asking friends what they thought were great hits. Here I am, then, to present what I've compiled. It's not definitive, that's absolutely sure (suggestions are most certainly welcome). The order was one I've chosen according to any connections I could think of between previous and next songs. Check it out:

    First Set: The Ladies
    01. Eurythmics - PlayMissionary Man
    02. Stevie Nicks - PlayEdge of Seventeen
    03. Tina Turner - PlayWe Don't Need Another Hero

    05. Madonna - Open Your Heart
    06. Fleetwood Mac - PlayLittle Lies
    07. Cyndi Lauper - PlayAll Through The Night
    08. Metrô - Sândalo de Dândi
    09. Cocteau Twins - Lorelei
    10. Siouxsie and the Banshees - PlayRhapsody

    Second Set: The Gentlemen
    11. Depeche Mode - PlayShake the Disease
    12. Tears for Fears - PlayWoman in Chains
    13. Elton John - PlayBlue Eyes
    14. a-ha - PlayTake on Me
    15. Lindsey Buckingham - Go Insane
    16. The Clash - PlayRock the Casbah
    17. Roxette - PlayThe Look

    Bonuses

    25 Sep 2008, 15:53 by GigaCat

    1. Donna Summer -
    2. Natacha Atlas -
    3. Julie London -
    4. Nancy Sinatra -
    6. Johnny Kidd and The Pirates - сравнительно недавнее и сравнительно слабое увлечение, сейчас уже тянет меньше.
    7. Petula Clark -
    9. Siouxsie and the Banshees -
    10. Dusty Springfield - no comment.

  • OTR: The Bolshoi - Lindy's Party

    23 Sep 2008, 01:22 by warren33

As a band, The Bolshoi existed from 1983 until soon after the release of Lindy's Party in 1987. In the liner notes of Away...Best of the Bolshoi, lead vocalist Trevor Tanner writes that the broke up because "it just wasn't fun anymore" - a good reason for any band to break up, as far as I'm concerned. Tanner would go on to release a handful of solo albums and eventually join with Celtic-rock group Rathkeltair. Keyboardist Paul Clark currently works as the CEO of Walkthrough Media. Bassist Nick Chown and drummer Jan Kalicki seem to have fallen off the face of the Earth.

Lindy's Party was The Bolshoi's second proper studio album after the debut full-length Friends one year prior. While Friends is often referenced as a goth rock masterpiece, Lindy's Party is seen as a lesser album for the glossiness of its production. Bullocks, say I to that! This is a brilliant album, from start to finish. I can listen to this record all the way through multiple times and never seem to tire of it. Glossy or not, this is a damn fine set of songs from yet another band who never got the recognition they deserved.

"Auntie Jean" opens the proceedings, with an ominous dance floor stomp. "Please" keep the tempo up, but brightens things only slightly until the stunning "Crack in Smile," a song which starts a whisper and explodes into a plaintive wail over it's six-minute running time. If there were any justice in the world, "Crack In Smile" would be huge hit with an epic music video to match - and no god damn single edit to cut away any of it's beauty.

"Swings and Roundabouts" is a goofy little romp just this side of The Cure's "PlayScrew," but it strangely doesn't interrupt the flow of the album like "Screw" does to The Head on the Door. Instead, it provides a breather between the aural abyss of "Crack In Smile" and "She Don't Know." Channelling The Mission, "She Don't Know" is a moderately upbeat call and response with lyrics seemingly meditating on how knowledge not gained through actual experience is worthless.

Side B opens with "T.V. Man," which is exactly about what the title implies it is about. "Can You Believe It?" sounds like an experiment in combining the influences of Art of Noise and Talking Heads, with moderate success. Personally, I don't think the song suits The Bolshoi very well, although it is an interesting experiment - it certainly is far more listenable than some band's experiments, if nothing else.

"Rainy Days" is a more straightforward rock song. However, "Barrowlands" is a real creepshow which should be essential for any Halloween playlist.

The album closes with it's namesake song, "Lindy's Party," a track which dynamically builds in much the same way "Crack In Smile" does, however with an optimistic dénouement, rather than the desperation which closes out the other track. Thematically, it could easily bookend Siouxsie and the Banshees' rendition of "PlayDear Prudence." Come out and play, indeed.
