Soul Coughing, 1992-2000, was a New York-based band founded by vocalist and guitarist Mike Doughty (who billed himself at the time as ‘M. Doughty’), a folk singer, slam poet, and sometime music writer.
Doughty was a doorman at the old Knitting Factory on Houston Street in New York. While working there he met sampler artist Mark De Gli Antoni, upright bass player Sebastian Steinberg, drummer Yuval Gabay, and artist David Linton. Doughty convinced them to join him in forming a new band. They played their first gig, as ‘M. Doughty’s Soul Coughing’ at the Knitting Factory on June 15, 1992, a late-Monday night slot that Doughty cadged from his boss because nobody else wanted it. In 1993, he founded a club night called SLAW at CBGB’s 313 Gallery, which was meant to emulate the popular jazz and hip hop club Giant Step, but eventually became a showcase for Soul Coughing. Posters for SLAW were headlined ‘Deep Slacker Jazz’ (a parody of The Who’s slogan ‘Maximum R&B’), which became an enduring description of the band’s sound.
The band was signed within a year to Warner Brothers subsidiary Slash Records, and released three albums: Ruby Vroom (1994), Irresistible Bliss (1996), and El Oso (1998). They enjoyed minor hit singles with “
Circles,” “
Super Bon Bon,” and “
Screenwriter’s Blues.”
The band broke up in 2000, after years of feuding over songwriting credits and publishing money.

So called 'indie rock' sure does need a new name. Something maybe other than 'alternative rock', that is. Genres are pretty much just funny these days. But they'll morph countless times as the present falls further into the past, becoming more specific, yet so infuriatingly more convoluted... it'll all go full circle and we'll end up having genre genres... genres of genre. Hang on, hasn't that already happened? It will never really make any sense.

Adistu: I don't believe many people on LastFm are aware that "indie = independent". I don't listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers (personally, don't like them), but I saw their page here on LastFm and they are tagged as "Indie" and "Indie Rock", I just sort of shook my head... I don't like to use the word "indie" to describe music, because it doesn't describe the music at all--many "indie" artists who made records on both indie labels and major labels, there is no discernible difference between their indie or major label records... And if the idea is that "indie" means "less-commercial" sounding and "major" means "more-commercial" sounding--well, that's crap, take for instance Mr. Bungle (who were on Warner Brothers) who were totally uncommercial and then turn on your TV and you will see prime-time TV shows littered with constant "indie" music songs.... I'm just saying, the tag makes no damn sense.

Rupealoop: Nice with the lyrical references... Yeah, Circles is definitely not their best song (it just gets the most plays since it was the biggest "radio hit" of theirs)--but the Velvet Underground has it worse on LastFm, in my opinion (they have I'm Sticking With You as the number one song since it was used in Juno... Of all the Velvet Underground songs, that one is number one).

Justin: blame. is the cure, cure anything... i think its worse that circles is FAR from their best song. maybe i'll come down, anyone?

Hm, for me El Oso and Ruby Vroom are tied for the best. Irresistible Bliss is good, but it feel chaotic and lacks focus at points... though all of the songs stand well on their own.

Irresistable Bliss is perfect. Ruby Vroom is nearly perfect. And El Oso is good. If only I could have seen them live. Mike is good solo though, but it doesnt compare. They're at the top of my Get Back Together And Tour list, followed by Talking Heads and Phish. More people need to listen to Soul Coughing. I tell everyone I know about them.

Pick up Mike Doughty's solo records, good, if not better at times. Golden Delicious was just released last month and is well it hasnt left my CD player. I'm amazed his own project isn't on the similar artists list.
