MORE INFO:
CMU ON THE SOCIAL
For nearly ten years CMU has been reporting on and writing about and bigging up all kinds of great new music. Among the artists to get some of their earliest coverage in CMU over the years include Stereophonics, Eminem, Snow Patrol, The Dandy Warhols, Delays, The Streets, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, McFly, Kasabian, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys to mention just a few. To mark its tenth year, CMU launched its own monthly night meaning we can now not only talk about but also showcase the new bands we're most exciting about – and just three months in we’ve had some storming sets from bands and artists like Vessels, Maths Class, Sportsday Megaphone, Big Strides, Penny Black Remedy, A Human, RestLessList and Infadels. And this month, we'll add two more brilliant bands to that list.
CMU ON JOSH WELLER:
Josh Weller has been a firm favourite at CMU ever since we stumbled across him by mistake at The Secret Garden Party a few years ago. His catchy tunes, great lyrics, eclectic tastes and amiable personality make him instantly likeable. Comparisons have been drawn to Elvis Costello and Randy Newman, which should give you some idea of the songwriting pedigree we're dealing with here. He takes time out from new recording sessions to be with us, and with only moments to catch his breath after returning from Bestival.

CMU ON THE DEER TRACKS:
Our first international CMU Social band, The Deer Tracks join us all the way from Sweden to showcase their recently-released debut album, 'Aurora'. The album is a mix of epic electronica and glacial cool, with an emotional resonance not normally association with such a sound. The album has been spinning in the CMU office so much that we're slightly worried that the laser might burn through the CD. So, we’re delighted to be able to see them in the flesh.

The Festivals 2008
28 Aug 2008, 11:31 by knockoutcarl
Right, here is a list of bands or acts that I really enjoyed or really didn't from the V Festival and Reading Festival 2008.
V Festival
Amy Winehouse
No, no no no no. Absolutely terrible. She crawled on stage 20 MINUTES LATE. Sung like crap. Did an awful version of
Valerie. The best thing was she crawled of stage earlier because of it.
Kings of Leon
If these guys play a festival, you have to go and see them. I saw them at Reading in 2005, didn't in 2007 (The Living End were on), so felt that I had to. Plus I've become a bigger fan since. They are amazing live. New tunes like
Sex on Fire fit in so well with their other outstanding tracks, and yet sound like a progression the band needed to keep exciting.
Stereophonics
Always a great live band, because everyone knows the words to their songs. Their greatest hits tour sounds like a great excuse to see them play all of their big tracks.
Muse
If someone tells you this band are crap live, then that person is obviously stupid. Muse are the best band I have ever seen. They have a stage show as well as amazing songs. Bellamy plays his guitar in a way that says "I'm that good, I taught Jimi Hendrix how to play". Dom's drums always sound intense and Chris' bass skills, although often overlooked, match Bellamy's guitar.
Reading Festival
Serj Tankian
Should really consider reforming System of a Down as his set was lost on the Reading crowd, who were only their because they expected to hear
Chop Suey.
Biffy Clyro
Many bands suffered with sound issues this weekend, meaning their sets were lost in translation. Biffy's wasn't. As powerful and loud as at the NME Tent last year, Biffy were so good, they were the only band I saw that weekend that made me feel squashed in the crowd.
Rage Against the Machine
Sound issues. Not helped that I was stood left hand side of the stage, but we could barely hear it, and for a band who are loud, that's not good.
Dirty Pretty Things
Waterloo to Anywhere was a cracking album, and I'm happy to have seen the band on the tour for that album. But their new one (so naff I could't tell you the title) has put serious doubts on my opinion of them. They were only really any good for Bang Bang, You're Dead and their cover of Nirvana's
In Bloom. Who would've know that Nirvana would've turned up that much!
Editors
This band has improved so much over the last year that I regard them now highly as a must see live. Okay, so some songs might sound the same (and the guy next to me in the crowd seemed to point that out after every bloody song), but if the formula works...
Manic Street Preachers
There was no way I was going to see The Killers. Having seen them at Reading 2005 and V 2007, and deciding that they can't really cut it live, I'd go and see the tried and tested Manics. Who were amazing. Again. They might be old enough to be my parents, but that doesn't even matter, as the Manics proved that they are Godlike Genuises, and everyone in that tent knew it.
Tenacious D
If you are going to talk about this year's Reading, then you can't avoid two things about the Sunday.
1. The massive gap made by Slipknot's cancellation.
2. Tenacious D
Few people moaned about the fact that they were there above Slipknot. Most people didn't care. It was Tenacious D time, and when they came on stage, it was immediately funny, and immediately memorable. Never has a song like
Fuck Her Gently gone down so well at Reading. Very funny.
Metallica
With a new album to promote, and the fact that Download was incredibly dull for rock headliners, Metallica came in to Reading knowing that people were tired from the previous days, but also still needing the heavy input that Sunday had promised so much of. With Avenged Sevenfold pulling out last minute, and the appalling Mindless Self Indulgence playing FOURTH HEADLINER instead of their listed OPENING ACT (don't get me started on shitty Plain White T's), the Sunday didn't look too great anymore. Feeder were brilliant, as were The D, but it didn't take a lot for Meta
