There were two bands named The Beat, both active at the same time in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Both also worked under other names as a result of the name conflict.

1) The English two-tone ska band The Beat were known as The English Beat outside of the UK.

majik! Dunno how Andy Williams never realised that "can't get used to losing you" was really a ska tune! brilliant! And "Tears of a Clown" is way better than the original too. "Save it for later" is my favourite of their original tracks, but so many others are quality stuff too.

Uh... yes, they are. The (English) Beat. And there is also a US The Beat and you might identify that one more with New Wave. Today this band is better known as Paul Collins' Beat.
